Carlos Beltran
According to Jon Heyman of Newsday, baseball sources are saying that OF Carlos Beltran’s agent, Scott Boras, is asking teams to start the bidding for his client at $119 million.
MetsBlog’s Take

Texas has no state income tax.

I’m not an accountant.  In fact, math and I have had a rough relationship dating back my fiasco with fractions in fourth grade – but, it would seem to me, signing with New York and not Houston would be the equiviliant of giving up an entire year’s worth of pay in state income taxes.

Hopefully an accountant will explain this better in the comments section.

Mets Prospects
OF Lastings Milledge tops Baseball America’s list of the top 30 Mets prospects. The author of the list, J.J. Cooper, discussed his top 30 at a chat on Baseball America.

Tino Martinez
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that 1B Tino Martinez has agreed to sign with the Yankees – an announcement is expected within a day or two.

BeltranToTheMets.com

MetsBlog asked its readers to express their reasons for wanting OF Carlos Beltran to sign with the Mets.  BeltranToTheMets.com features snippets from a selection of the emails we received, an interview with two renowned journalists familiar with what makes Beltran tick and two confidence ratings that help to determine the Met fans true interest in the game’s top free agent.

Enjoy.

Poll of the Day
On a scale of one to ten, one being completely against it and ten being he can’t sign soon enough, how badly do you want to see OF Carlos Beltran in a Mets uniform through, at least, 2009?

Schedule

MetsBlog will not be posting over New Years weekend.  We will return on Monday for what is expected to be the start of a rather hectic week, centering on Beltran and Boras.

As always, should major news break over the weekend, though, we will be here to provide insights and reaction.

Have a happy and healthy New Year.

Best if luck in 2005,

MorningNews: Is It Necessary?

by Metsblog.com on December 30th, 2004 at 9:21 am

Carlos Beltran

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that Mets GM Omar Minaya, his special assistant, Tony Bernazard, and Jeff Wilpon are expected to meet with OF Carlos Beltran and his agent, Scott Boras, next week.

Sherman states that Boras is using a seven-year deal worth $112 million as a starting point for his negotiations with all teams.

According to Peter Abraham of the Journal News, there are people within the Yankees management who believe adding Beltran is unnecessary, “considering the team won 101 games last season.” The Daily News suggests that, according to one source, a six-year deal worth $15 million a season for Beltran could be the Yankees’ limit.

Considering their luxury tax issues, and how it weighs on their payroll, Sherman notes that the Yankees would in essence be paying out $21 million per year in 2005 for Beltran, not just the $15 million they’d be putting in his pocket.

The Daily News writes that Beltran is being courted by the Yankees, Astros, Mets and Tigers.

Insurance
Matthew Cerrone, of MetsBlog.com: In a case like Beltran, a player about to enter his prime, who has shown no major injuries, would his seven-year contract be fully insured? In that case, it almost seems worth it for an insurance company to give a policy.

Will Carroll, medical expert at Baseball Prospectus: Yes and no. He would be eligible to be insured with little or no problem getting underwritten. The premium would be INSANE so the team might pass – my guess is around 20% of the contract. The insurance would also only cover the first three years. If he was injury-free, it could then be extended for another three.

Randy Johnson
According to several reports, the Yankees are nearing a deal with Arizona that would send RHP Javier Vazquez, SP Brad Halsey, C Dioner Navarro and $8.5 million to the Diamondbacks for LHP Randy Johnson.

The New York Post believes that Arizona then plans to ship Vazquez to Baltimore for OF Jay Gibbons and Luis Matos, among others, and Navarro off to the Dodgers in a deal that would net them 1B-OF Sean Green. However, if the Arizona-LA deal seems unlikely, the Diamondbacks will pass on getting Navarro and, instead, settle for more money from New York.

The final step would have the Yankees giving Johnson a two-year, $30 million contract extension.

Alfonso Soriano
The New York Post writes that Texas has been willing to move 2B Alfonso Soriano for starting pitching.

Odalis Perez
On Tuesday, Mets officials denied reports that GM Omar Minaya planned to meet with LHP Odalis Perez, going as far as to say the team was not interested in his services.

Yet, today, the Washington Post quotes Nationals bullpen coach Jose Rijo, who has been dispatched to the Domincan Republic to recruit Perez to play in Washington, as saying, “I think the Mets put a lot of pressure on him. They’re having Pedro Martinez [talk] to him. I’m talking to him myself. I told him I don’t want him to be a third or fourth pitcher in one city when he can be No. 1 in another city.”

The Nationals are each believed to have offered Perez a three-year deal worth roughly $18 million.

The NY Post reports that Minaya won’t pursue another starting pitcher unless he can trade RHP Steve Trachsel first.

MetsBlog’s Take

A reader suggested that the Mets pass on Beltran and, instead, sign 1B Carlos Delgado, trade Trachsel and prospects for a right fielder and sign Odalis Perez.  So simple, so effective.  While MetsBlog is giddy over the idea of having a Reyes-Wright-Beltran trio plastered over Mets merchandise over the next half decade, we recognize that it may not be the right move at the right time.

However, getting younger, and slotting a lefty into your starting rotation is never a bad thing.

Regardless of the Beltran-Delgado soap opera, swapping Trachsel for a right fielder and signing Perez is probably a wise move all around – especially considering the kid’s fascination with RHP Pedro Martinez.

The question now becomes, who can the Mets get to play right field in exchange for Trachsel?

Note: Sorry for the Dull Week

by Metsblog.com on December 29th, 2004 at 3:32 pm

Note to MetsBlog’s Readers…

We apologize for such a dull week.  In addition to a lack of news, we’ve been hard at work arranging interviews for what we plan to call Mets Minor League Week, which will dissect the team’s farm system, with opinions and insights provided by J.J. Cooper of Baseball America, Scott Lauber of the Press and Sun Bulletin, Jonathan Mayo or MLB.com, and yet-to-be-determined members of the Mets minor league coaching staff, evaluation team and former-players.

Thanks for your patience…

MorningNews: Where’s My Minor League Deal

Carlos Beltran
According to Houston TV station KRIV, the sixth-year on Houston’s reported offer to OF Carlos Beltran is an option year at $14 million.
MetsBlog’s Take

So the scoreboard is as follows:

The Yankees: reportedly willing to offer Beltran a guaranteed six-year, $90 million deal at $15 million per year.

The Astros: unable to negotiate with Beltran after January 8, and have reportedly offered a guaranteed five-year, $82 million deal, at $16.2 million per year, with a sixth-year option at $14 million and a $5 million buyout.

The Mets: expected to meet with Beltran and his agent, Scott Boras, towards the beginning of next week.

Beltran and Boras: seeking a 10-year, $200 million deal and supposedly will not consider signing unless the deal guarantees seven-years.

MetsBlog: offer Beltran a guaranteed five-year deal at $80 million, with a no-trade clause and a sixth and an easily attained seventh-year vested player option.  Next season and the year after, Beltran would earn $18 million per season.  From 2007 to 2009 he would be paid $14 million, with the two vested option years ringing in at $16 million.

Do You Want Beltran
Send an email to faneditorials@metsblog.com containing a well-written pitch to OF Carlos Beltran, stating why you feel he should come to the Mets. Maybe it’s because he would enjoy the nightlife, maybe you’ll take him to a strip club, maybe you think he’d have much to offer the New York community, maybe you simply believe he can be the perfect leader for a group of young up-and-coming talent in the world’s biggest city.

Keep your statement pithy, well-researched, sincere and less than 500 words.

We will accept submissions through the New Year. Depending on the amount of responses, we plan to print each, have it bound, and send it to the attention of the team’s management and media department and the office of Scott Boras. We will, of course, post each submission at a new MetsBlog site, BeltranToTheMets.com, as well.

Good luck.

Sammy Sosa
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs recently contacted the Los Angeles Dodgers to see if they have interest in trading OF Sammy Sosa for 1B-OF Sean Green, while Newsday reports that the Diamondbacks are still interested in acquiring Green once an inevitable trade with the Yankees sends LHP Randy Johnson to the Bronx.
MetsBlog’s Take

There was talk early in the off-season about a deal that would’ve sent C Mike Piazza to the Dodgers for 1B-OF Sean Green. And, of course, we are all well aware of the OF Cliff Floyd to the Cubs for Sosa discussions.  Now we have a Green-for-Sosa rumor on the table.

Could a three-way deal between the Cubs, Dodgers and Mets be in the works?

Floyd and Green go to the Cubs.
Piazza heads back to LA.
Sosa, against the will of the fans, comes to Queens.

Interesting, and crazy, thoughts for a slow Hot Stove day.

Chris Woodward
The Mets signed SS Chris Woodward to a minor league contract.
MetsBlog’s Take

At age 28, Woodward is a nice player, and would make for a solid backup to Jose Reyes. In his first full season starting in Toronto he hit .276 with 13 home runs. However, his time diminished due to injuries, inconsistent play and a high strikeout -to-walk ratio.

In addition to his traditional roll as a shortstop, over the last three seasons Woodward has played six games at first, ten at second and four at third. Spanning 111 at-bats against teams from the National League, Woodward has a .288 batting average.

Defensively, Woodward leaves a lot to be desired. Though he can make an occasional dazzling play, he turns the double play very week and has averaged one error for every seven games he played in the field over the last three seasons.

Woodward will compete with OF-2B Marlon Anderson, IF Jeff Keppinger and IF Danny Garcia for a bench spot during Spring Training.

Question, Omar: Where’s my minor league contract?

Jose Reyes
SS Jose Reyes is hitting .293 with one homer and 11 RBI though 28 games in the Dominican Winter League, while showing no signs of an injured back, ankle or hamstring.

Poll of the Day
If it allowed the Mets to gain some dollars to guarantee OF Carlos Beltran signs at Shea, would you accept OF Sammy Sosa as the next right-fielder for the New York Mets for one season?

MorningNews: Exorcise the Demons

Carlos Beltran

The Houston Chronicle reports that OF Carlos Beltran has assured Astros owner Drayton McLane that he will make a decision on where to play by the January 8 salary arbitration deadline.

The Chronicle also notes that Mets GM Omar Minaya “is about to make his move on” Beltran, who is no longer listening to teams that are not offering a minimum seven-year deal.  According to Newsday, two baseball officials familiar with the situation claim that the Mets have made Beltran “a top priority.”

The Astros have reportedly offered Beltran a six-year deal worth roughly $96 million.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post states, according to an executive from a team not interested in Beltran, that, “all things being equal, Beltran would prefer to remain with the Astros.”

MetsBlog’s Take

Minaya can meet with Beltran.  He can say, “hello.”  But if Minaya and the Mets ownership make the All-Star an offer, they better be prepared to do whatever it takes to sign him.

This situation appears to be the Mets opportunity to exorcise the demons of Vladdy and ARod – if the team committs, and get their fans excited and dashes their hopes again, following three straight losing seasons, a series of bad acquisitions and trades and a litany of confusing messages, the repersussion of losing Beltran, especially to the Yankees, could be deadly.

Odalis Perez
“My agent, Fernando Cuza, informed me that Minaya is coming to the Dominican Republic to talk to me personally,” LHP Odalis Perez told The Associated Press yesterday. “I’m excited about the possibility of joining Pedro Martinez in the Mets’ rotation.”

Mets officials, however, told MLB.com, the Daily News, the NY Post and Newsday yesterday that they are not interested in Perez.

Additionally, Cuza confirmed the Mets statement with the same newspapers.

Joe Nelson
The Mets signed RHP Joe Nelson to a minor league contract.
MetsBlog’s Take
Nelson, 29, the Mets’ second Red Sox-swiped minor league free agent in a week, is a middle reliever at best, having posted a 3.01 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings for Double-A Trenton last season.  He missed all of 2003 and most of 2002 recovering from elbow surgery.

Steve Reed

According to Newsday, te Mets have interest in bringing back RHP Steve Reed to join the team’s bullpen.  Reed has a 3.11 ERA over the last four years, two of which came while pitching for the Rockies.

As RotoWorld notes, “And they wouldn’t have to give up Jason Bay for him this time.”

Luxury Cap
The Yankees must pay $25,026,352 in luxury taxes to Major League Baseball, according to a Dec. 21 memo sent to the league.  Boston owes $3,155,234 and Anaheim owes $927,059.

The Yankees were taxed at a rate of 30 percent because this is the second straight season they have exceeded the limit.  Should the exceed the limit next year, the Yankees will be taxed at 40 percent.

Short Hops

The Cubs agreed to a one-year deal with OF Todd Hollandsworth, avoiding arbitration.

LHP Eric Milton and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a $25.5 million, three-year deal.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs continue to explore trades for OF Sammy Sosa with the Mets, Braves, Royals and Nationals.

Indians GM Mark Shapiro confirmed to the Willoughby News Herald he has made an offer to LHP Kevin Millwood.

Poll of the Day
If the Mets make a legitimate push to sign OF Carlos Beltran, only to see him sign with the Yankees for equal or less money, how will you feel?

Victor Zambrano

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan gave RHP Victor Zambrano’s elbow a clean bill of health – his ankle is another story. The Hospital believes that Zambrano twisted his ankle during his first start as a Met, which led to overcompensation, and pain, in his elbow.

“He is completely healed,” Zambrano’s agent, Peter Greenberg, told Davidoff.

Carlos Beltran

“The meeting with Steinbrenner was very good,” OF Carlos Beltran told Primera Hora, a newspaper in Puerto Rico, over the weekend.  “He is a professional person, super educated.  The Yankees have shown that they are champions and the owner is going to do everything possible to win.

“[The Mets] entered and they are being aggressive,” Beltran added.  “To this point, they have not made an offer. I believe that we will have a meeting very soon.”

The Associated Press reports that a meeting between Beltran and the Mets will “probably” take place the week of Jan. 3.

Trades
Jon Heyman of Newsday writes that the Mets asked about Rockies 1B Todd Helton and Reds 1B Sean Casey.  However, the Rockies wanted SS Jose Reyes or 3B David Wright, and Casey was not available.

MorningNews: The Minor League Contract

by Metsblog.com on December 24th, 2004 at 8:55 am

Minor League Contracts
The Mets announced that they have signed 1B Andres Galarraga, RHP Juan Padilla, Grant Roberts and Scott Strickland, C Ramon Castro and Andy Dominique, 2B-OF Marlon Anderson, 1B-OF Luis Garcia and OF Kerry Robinson and Gerald Williams to minor league contracts and also invited each of them to Major League Spring Training.
MetsBlog’s Take
A lot of fans have been posting to our comment section, calling the talk radio circuit and flooding the web-message boards with irate chatter about the Mets signing of Andres Galarraga.  Calm down, folks.  He doesn’t occupy a spot on the team’s 40-man roster unless his contract is purchased out of Spring Training.  Reserve your anger for early April.
Galarraga: At 43-years-old, Galarraga is still amongst the best defensive first baseman in baseball, and he’s a righty.  I recall during the late 1980′s, when the Mets and Expos competed regularly with the Cubs and Cardinals for the National League East pennant, before balls were lofted over the wall at a regular pace, and bunt and hit-and-run were in vogue, Galarraga was a rally-ender, as he seemingly played first base with a gigantic fisherman’s net.  What a tremendous fielder.  During 2003, his last season as a starter, at 41-yeras-old, in 272 at-bats with the Giants, Galarraga hit .301 with 12 home runs and committed only one fielding error.  He is not a starter anymore.  However, he would be great to have in the dugout, helping the youngsters with the rules of the game, and on the field in tight leads – this year’s version of Jay Bell or Todd Zeile.
Padilla: Though Padilla, 27, had a 3.97 ERA in 11 appearances with the Yankees last season, he was 1-0 with a 10.67 ERA with the Reds , as well.  Batters hit .350 against him with nobody on base, and .360 against him with runners on.
Roberts: And the relationship continues…ten months ago Grant looked to be the leading contender to be the Mets fifth starter. By the end of last season he was ostracized for hiding a shoulder injury, found himself on waivers, went unclaimed, argued with the Mets over who would pay for his arm surgery, and now he is back for more.  Between 2001-2003, Roberts, 27, was 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 90 innings pitched, while walking 27 with 70 strike outs.  He was an effective and valuable reliever.  Last year, in just four appearances, before going down with a shoulder injury, Roberts allowed 9 runs in four innings.
Strickland: Recovering from Tommy John Surgery, Strickland should be ready to pitch in the Major Leagues by opening day.  Still just 28-years-old, he has a career 3.28 ERA, with 241 strikeouts in 236 innings.  He has not pitched for the Mets in nearly a year and a half.
Castro: Castro, 28, was accused of raping a woman in August 2003 and is currently serving a one-year probation sentence after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor.  Castro hit .135 in 96 at-bats for the Marlins last season.
Dominique: The 29-year-old career Red Sox minor leaguer he hit .267 with 15 home runs in Pawtucket last season.  In 11 at-bats last season with Boston he had two base hits.
Anderson: A once promising young 2B, the left-handed hitting Anderson, 30, has played both 2B and OF over the last few seasons.  He is a career .264 hitter with little power, decent speed, a versatile glove who will never draw a walk, but rarely strikes out.
Garcia: According to Chris Kline, minor league columnist for Baseball America, Garcia is “a tall, lanky first baseman with a lot of holes in his swing – if anything, he’s a serviceable 4A player, whose hit his way to the upper levels, but stalled in AAA.”
Robinson: At 31-years-old and three home runs for his career, Robinson is far from a significant signing. However, with limited risk on a minor-league contract, he can be a solid lefty off-the-bench with quick feet, smart base running, very good defense and a propensity for laying down a bunt.
Williams: Williams, 38, batted .233 with 17 runs scored, four home runs and 11 RBI in 47 games with the Mets last season.  However, his most notable achievement was forcing Mets fans to scratch their heads repeatedly wondering why he, and not a younger player, such as OF Prentice Redman or OF Victor Diaz, was roaming the Shea outfield for part of the season.

Carlos Delgado
The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles haven’t made any progress toward acquiring 1B Carlos Delgado.
MetsBlog’s Take
The Mets payroll currently sits in the $80 to $90 million range, therefore, they will not be signing both 1B Carlos Delgado and OF Carlos Beltran.  In fact, no team will be doing that.  Beltran will likely decide on his next stop by January 8, the final date Houston can negotiate with him thanks to the salary arbitration process.  Delgado has become the consolation prize for Beltran, so expect no news on this front until the days after the New Year.

Eric Byrnes
Multiple reports over the last few days indicate the Mets have expressed interest in acquiring OF Eric Byrnes from Oakland.
MetsBlog’s Take
MetsBlog loves Byrnes.  He’s a fascinating player.  Nicknamed Captain America last season during the Dominican Winter Leagues for his constant hustle and good-willed nature, Byrnes, 28, is a subtle combination of power, speed, hustle and defensive highlight reel. Set to make roughly $1 to $2 million in 2005, before entering his first free agent market, he hit .282 with 20 HR, 73 RBI, 17 SB, 39 2B and a .347 OBP in 569 at-bats for Oakland last season.

He will not wow you with any one category, but he’ll never fail without giving his best effort – a quality every team can use.  For this, the Oakland fans love him.

Earlier in the season, a report surfaced that the A’s had interest in C Jason Phillips, but that was before the acquisition of C Jason Kendall, forcing Adam Melhuse, who the A’s like, as a backup.

The A’s, however, are still very interested in moving side-armed reliever Chad Bradford, who Rick Peterson has long been a fan of.  As one Oakland reporter told us, “If they did trade Bradford, I always thought the Mets were the most likely destination because of Rick Peterson.”

From what we can gather, the A’s are in need of more pitching, particularly someone who has pitched at least one or two years in the Major Leagues making little to no money, such as RHP Jae Seo.

Moises Alou
As was initially reported last night by MetsBlog, according to the Associated Press and ESPN Deportes, OF Moises Alou and the Giants have agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $16.5 million.

The Daily News reports the Mets offered Alou a one-year deal with an option.

Josh Phelps
The Devil Rays signed 1B Josh Phelps to a one-year contract.

Orber Moreno
Though he was initially cut from the team, multiple reports indicate that RHP Orber Moreno has now signed a minor league contract with the Mets.

Moreno was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA last season before he went on the disabled list July 25 with a strained right shoulder.

MetsBlog’s Take

We resisted commenting heavily on Moreno’s departing earlier in the week, assuming, for whatever reason, that he would be re-signed, as many non-tenders often are.

MetsBlog is a huge fan of Moreno’s and is glad to see him back.  At 27-years-old, he has worked hard to return from multiple injuries in his career – if healthy, he should be the ideal set-up man for Braden Looper

Carlos Beltran

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros have offered OF Carlos Beltran a six-year, $96 million deal.  According to the the New York Post, though Beltran’s agent, Scott Boras, continues to ask for ten-years, $200 million, he claims a team will not even be considered unless they offer a minimum of seven years at $112 million.

The New York Post writes that Mets GM Omar Minaya has told Mets management he wants to make an aggressive run at Beltran.

The Chronicle writes the following: “Beltran also received a book of about 250 e-mails the Astros have received from fans urging the club to re-sign Beltran, who is considered by baseball officials the top free agent.”

Ramon Castro
The Mets have signed former Florida C Ramon Castro to a minor-league contract, a major-league source told the Daily News.

Castro, 28, was accused of raping a woman in August 2003 and is currently serving a one-year probation sentence after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor.

Castro hit .135 in 96 at-bats for the Marlins last season.

Kerry Robinson
The Daily News reports that the Mets have agreed to a minor league contract with OF Kerry Robinson. Robinson hit .293 with 11 steals in 80 games for the Padres in 2004. He will earn $15,000 for every month he’s in the minors and $500,000 if he is promoted to Shea.
MetsBlog’s Take…
At 31-years-old and three home runs for his career, Robinson is far from a significant signing.  However, with limited risk on a minor-league contract, he can be a solid lefty off-the-bench with quick feet, smart base running, very good defense and a propensity for laying down a bunt.

Todd Helton
Rockies GM Charlie Monfort told ESPN 560 AM that he won’t consider trading Todd Helton until “at least three to four years down the road if we are still spinning our wheels like we have been.”

MetsBlog Activist

We can only fight fire with fire.

I have no idea what the fans of the Houston Astros can say to Beltran to woo him back to Houston, but I’m certain the persuasiveness of New York can do better.

Here’s what MetsBlog proposes…

Send an email to faneditorials@metsblog.com containing a well-written pitch to OF Carlos Beltran, stating why you feel he should come to the Mets.  Maybe it’s because he would enjoy the nightlife, maybe you’ll take him to a strip club, maybe you think he’d have much to offer the New York community, maybe you simply believe he can be the perfect leader for a group of young up-and-coming talent in the world’s biggest city.

Let us know.

Keep your statement pithy, well-researched, sincere and less than 500 words.

The Houston fans compiled 250 responses, so don’t be shy…if you have something to say, say it now.

We will accept submissions through the weekend.  If we receieve a comparable amount, we’ll print each, have it bound, and send it to the attention of the team’s management and media department and the office of Scott Boras.  We will, of course, post each submission at a new MetsBlog site, BeltranToTheMets.com, as well.

Mets management and most all of the team’s media to notice of our mostly negative YesOrNoToSosa.com plea – we know this for a fact.  Therefore, we see no reason we shouldn’t be positive, as well, and do the same with regards to requesting Beltran.

Like George McFly said, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.”

Good luck.

EveningNews: Alou’s Not a Met

by Metsblog.com on December 22nd, 2004 at 7:31 pm

Moises Alou
ESPN Deportes is reporting that the Giants and OF Moises Alou have agreed to a two-year, $13.6 million contract.
MetsBlog’s Take…
*Phew*

Many believed that Alou was the Mets fallback position if they are to lose out on either OF Carlos Beltran or 1B Carlos Delgado.  My guess is that this will turn up the need to bring in OF Magglio Ordonez.

According to this morning’s New York Times, the Mets have asked Scott Boras for the medical report on Ordonez.
