MB: Ring a Ding Ding

by Matthew Cerrone on June 2nd, 2005 at 5:27 pm

Also, for what it’s worth, while talking to a few people about the Harper situation, most associated with the minor league system are under the impression that Royce Ring will be recalled by the Mets this weekend, and not Steve Colyer, as the New York papers reported this morning…

…either one is fine by me…i think i actually prefer to see a bit of colyer, quite frankly…

MB: Source Says Harper Was Likely in a Bar Fight

by Matthew Cerrone on June 2nd, 2005 at 5:20 pm

A person familiar with Harper’s recent activities tells me he believes Brett Harper was in a bar fight, and that the St. Lucie Mets most likely suspended him as a reaction to a pending law suit…

if this is true, as a huge fan of the 86 mets, i find this makes him more qualified to be part of their system, than it is grounds for suspension…

…oh, well, 80’s baseball if officially dead

Mike McGann is reporting at Gotham Baseball that St. Lucie 1B Brett Harper has been suspended indefinitely for an off-the-field incident…

In just 159 at-bats, Harper is batting .287 with 17 home runs and 47 RBI…

a person closely associated with st. lucie mets has told me this has nothing to do with steroids…

…but there is still no word as to what the suspension is for

ESPN: The Face of MLB

by Matthew Cerrone on June 2nd, 2005 at 11:32 am

According to Sports Business Daily, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are the most marketable players in Major League Baseball…Carlos Beltran ranks as seventh overall…

For those interested, ESPN.com has published the top 10

On the heels of this story, ESPN has put forth an interesting debate, asking readers, “Who is the face of baseball.”…

According to the current results, fans list Jeter number one, followed by Scott Rolen, Albert Pujols, Torii Hunter, Roger Clemens, Joe Maur, Johnny Damon, Beltran, Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Tejada

Tim Kurkjian, of ESPN, weighs in on why Jeter is tops on all lists…

…for those curious, my ranking went jeter, pujols, hunter, beltran, ichiro and rolen…figuring this covered all ethnic backgrounds, while featuring the the guys notorious for being extremely well-liked throughout the game…

…it’s an interesting debate, though, and one that major league baseball should be following, as these guys, plus miguel cabrera and david wright, will be the ones who carry the game to its next generation of fans

MB: The Curse of Ron Hunt

by Matthew Cerrone on June 2nd, 2005 at 10:39 am

i was recently talking online with a mets fan who had never heard of the ‘curse of run hunt,’ which has plagued second base for the mets since 1966…

…for those also unaware, it goes like this

Ron Hunt was the first Met to ever make the All-Star team.  He was a scrappy second baseman in his early twenties that rarely left the game with a clean uniform during his four year stint in New York…

To put it in modern terms, Hunt was David Eckstein or Craig Counsell

The fans loved him and he loved the Mets…

On November 29, 1966, the Mets traded Hunt to the Dodgers for a minor leaguer and two-time batting champ OF Tommy Davis.  Hunt, according to the story, was heartbroken…

A long list of players have played Hunt’s old position on the dirt of Shea Stadium.  And though several went on to become All-Stars for other teams, including Gregg Jefferies and Jeff Kent, or were All-Stars before joining the Mets, like Roberto Alomar and Carlos Baerga, only Edgardo Alfonzo has appeared in an All-Star game as a second baseman for the Mets since Hunt’s departure…

Alfonzo was a home grown, legitimate chance to finally kill the Curse of Hunt, and the Mets, instead, pushed him to third base – and then, like Hunt, let him go.  Since then, the sea of second baseman has only gotten worse…

A lock to make the Hall of Fame when he arrived to Shea, Roberto Alomar suffered what were amongst the worst seasons of his career while playing for the Mets, and has since retired having never been the same…

Following Alomar, the Mets moved Jose Reyes from shortstop over to second.  In roughly 200 at-bats playing Hunt’s position, Reyes hit just .255 and suffered more injuries than he hit home runs…

This season, last year’s shortstop, Kaz Matsui, known for his outstanding defense and all-around offensive skills while in Japan, scooted over to replace Reyes.  Matsui has looked awful defensively, done very little on offense and has missed time due to his contact lenses and a neck injury suffered from a bad night’s sleep…

Miguel Cairo finally got his chance to officially be the starting second baseman in place of Matsui, but strained his hamstring last night and now listed as being day-to-day…

For those wondering, Mark Loretta and Bret Boone are the only current second basemen slated to be free agents this coming off-season…

And if they’re smart, they’ll avoid Shea Stadium like the plague…because Ron Hunt is watching…
