Earlier this week, the Kansas City Royals designated C-OF Eli Marerro for assignment…The Royals have 10 days to trade or re-assign him before he becomes a free agent…
…i’ve heard from several people around the blue-n-orange campfire that the mets are quite concerned about mike piazza’s age and lethargy, and feel they need a younger back-up catcher as they move into the dog-days of summer…
Marerro is 31–years-old, and hit .320 with 10 home runs in 250 at-bats last season in Atlanta. Two years prior, in St. Louis, Marerro belted 18 homers in 397 at-bats while hitting just .262. He has only played the outfield and first base the last two and half seasons, though few understand why…
…if marrero can still catch, he could be an interesting choice for the mets, and could serve as a back-up to first and the outfield, as well…
…though he is known around the league for being a solid receiver, my one concern is that he has not faired much better at throwing runners out trying to steal than piazza has over the last few years…he also tends to go into long periods where he does nothing but strikeout…
…while there are far more pressing issues to deal with on this club, this back-up catcher situation is one to start preparing for…
…in addition to hitting like he never has before, mike cameron has looked outstanding lately on defense in right field…
…last night, he leaped to catch a ball off the wall, and though he could very easily have snagged it without the dramatic jump, roger cedeno would have been chasing the ball back into the infield after having deflected off the wall and his cleats…it should be noted that cliff floyd goofed on cameron for his flamboyance while in the dugout later that inning…
…all kidding aside, give credit where credit is due…
…cameron has taken to right field with total professionalism, maturity and with ease, and would be amongst the best in the game if his arm were just a touch stronger, though to his credit he hasn’t had many chances to test it out…
…not only is he making hard-to-reach catches, his route to the ball is putting him in position to pick up it up on an angled hop so that runners are restricted from even thinking about going to second, thus keeping the double play in order…excellent…
…i’m proud of you, mike…well done…
Miguel Cairo experienced tightness in his left hamstring while running to first base last night. Though he played in the field the following inning, he was later removed in place of Kaz Matsui…
According to Willie Randolph’s post-game comments, Cairo is day-to-day…
…figures…
…okay, kaz…as they say, the key to getting a second chance is taking responsibility for the first…you’ve got a second chance here, don’t blow it…
As the voting stands, the starting outfield for the 2005 All-Star Game will be…
1B – Albert Pujols
2B – Jeff Kent
SS – Nomar Garciaparra
3B – Scott Rolen
C – Mike Piazza
OF – Carlos Beltran
OF – Jim Edmonds
OF – Ken Griffey Jr.
Of note…
Doug Mientkiewicz is third in the voting at first base, ahead of Carlos Delgado; David Wright is fifth in the voting at third base, behind Aramis Ramirez; and Cliff Floyd checks in as seventh overall on the outfield list…
…when mlb finally catches on to david wright on a national level, the kid will start every year…
…i understand it’s a popularity contest, i get that…but since human beings are lacking less and less common sense every day, it seems players, such as nomar, who have not played all season, should be removed from ballot to ensure only players who have actually swung a bat find their way into the game…it just makes no sense that he starts…
Word is that the Mets intend to call up a lefty reliever from Norfolk for their weekend series against the Giants…
Dae-Sung Koo’s job is by no means in jeopardy, it’s just that the Mets have finally realized they can no longer go with just one lefty out of the pen…
…it’s about time…
Some have said that Royce Ring could be promoted, but Adam Rubin writes in the Daily News and David Lennon writes in Newsday that Steve Colyer, obtained in the Matt Ginter trade, appears likely to get the call, instead…
Prior to being knocked around for four runs against Pawtucket this past Monday, Colyer had a 3-1 record and a 2.57 ERA…
Rubin notes that Colyer’s fastball often reaches 97–mph, which could explain the 19 strike outs in 16 innings pitched…
…we’ve seen ring…i liked him, but wasn’t overly impressed…i think i’d like to get a sample of what this colyer kid can do…
RHP Danny Graves becomes a free agent today following his release by the Cincinnati Reds…
As it stands, the Marlins are the odds-on-favorites to sign Graves, most likely due to his past association with Marlins manager Jack McKeon…
