by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2005 at 8:46 am

The New York Post’s Jay Greenberg caught up with Doc Gooden to talk about what it is like – as Pedro Martinez is experiencing – to be so dominant on the mound at Shea Stadium with the Mets fans behind you…

it’s a must read

again, the on-field electricity of pedro martinez is worth more than we, as fans, will ever understand…but, reading these quotes, especially from a guy like doc, certainly helps make the connection

…and thanks, jay, for a great column…well done…

Newsday: Tough Love from Randolph to Reyes

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2005 at 8:40 am

David Lennon has a wonderful column in Newsday that focuses on the relationship between Willie Randolph and Jose Reyes

it’s a must read

Of note, Randolph tells Lennon about Reyes…

“I told him right from spring training that I was going to be hard on him…I told him that he really has to have thick skin with me because I’m going to be on him a lot and I don’t want him to take it the wrong way…I’m never going to be mad at him. I just want him to be the best, so I told him I’m going to be in his ear all the time. I might present things to him in a way that I might get a little heated. But I told him to understand that I love him and that I’m coming from the right place.”…

here’s the thing…in the off-season, fans cried for wally backman, or this guy, or that guy…but, the truth is, we had no way of knowing who would make a good manager and who would not, because we really had no way of knowing what type of men these people are…it’s this type of behavior, which lennon points out, good or bad, that makes a manager effective in this era…it’s rarely the x’s and o’s, anymore…

…and hats off to lennon, by the way, who has been doing a fantastic job this season…especially in his weekly ‘mets insider’ report…well done, man

MB: The Beltran and Pedro Connection

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2005 at 8:15 am

Carlos Beltran hit his seventh home run of the season last night. All seven have been hit in games started by Pedro Martinez

so weird

“I wish Pedro pitched every day, because every time he pitches, [Beltran] hits a home run,” Willie Randolph told reporters. “It’s really uncanny how it happens.”…

Beltran is batting .429 when Martinez pitches, .287 when he is not…

pedro is so electric that he inspires the fans, the front office, other players around the league, and most certainly the guys behind him

The Mets are 7–4 when he has started this season…

he’s so good, so passionate, works so hard, it appears no player wants to let him down

“It’s the Pedro factor,” Cameron told reporters. “Can’t be explained.”…

Jon Heyman pens an article at Newsday that will make you proud to be a fan of this team…

Heyman writes…

For all the warnings about what a divisive, disruptive diva Pedro is, not one appears true. He’s beloved in the clubhouse for his willingness to advise younger pitchers and his penchant for breaking tension by playing the clubhouse clown… He’s fun, he’s lively. He’s everything Randy Johnson isn’t, and more…
