For those interested in learning a little about what goes through a player’s mind on defense, David Lennon tackles the topic with David Wright in his latest Mets Insider column at Newsday…
…great stuff, as always…this column continues to provide an insight that we, as fans, bloggers, etc, will never have the chance to see first hand…so, thanks, dave, for filling us in…
…oh, and should a newspaper feel the need to hire me to write a similar column at some point, since this side of the game fascinates me so much, i can be had pretty easily…
Sitting with a large bag of ice on his knee, Kaz Matsui, who was spiked by Jason Kendall on yesterday’s game-ending double play, told reporters he felt much better after the game…
“I’ve never been hit like that before so it took me by surprise,” Matsui told reporters though an interpreter. “There was nothing unusual about it, just something you experience playing second base. If there’s a similar situation I might have to think about it before it happens.”
…no…that’s why you were spiked…so you’d be timid next time…come on, kaz, be strong…
Mike Cameron’s right quadricep is still swollen and he’s now listed as questionable for the series in Seattle, where he played for four seasons. He also has fluid in his right knee and a dislocated left ring finger…
…i was in a near-death car accident five years ago, and i wasn’t even this banged up…
“I want to be healthy more so than play just in Seattle,” Cameron told reporters of his health and desire to play in front of his old fans…
For more on Cameron’s relationship with Seattle, check out Adam Rubin’s column in the Daily News…
“All I ever heard was that I was brought here for my defense,” Mets 1B Doug Mientkiewicz told reporters upon learning that he would be benched in place of Brian Daubach. “It’s hard to help the team defensively when you’re not playing. But the offense is struggling and someone has to take the heat. I guess it’s me.”…
…nobody was a bigger champion of mientkiewicz entering this season that i was…i also believed the offense as a whole would function better than it has, making his offensive liabilities pale in comparison to his defensive assets…to me, it was a fair trade-off…
…but, doug, even i know that when the team can’t score a run, it needs something, anything, and who is going to be platooned? beltran? floyd? who? come on, buddy, this move with daubach isn’t that big of a surprise, is it?…
…and, if you want back in the lineup, next time you get in the game, here’s a suggestion: hit…i hear that tends to impressive the guy filling out the lineup card…
Asked by reporters following the game why he ran so hard after making contact with a ball that ended up being a home run, Piazza said, “I was actually running because I could see that ball hitting the top of the wall and me being thrown out at second base.”…
…umm…maybe i’m wrong, but isn’t this how it should always be…
According to Scott Lauber of the Press & Sun Bulletin, RHP Matt Lindstrom has been moved from the B-Mets starting rotation into their bullpen…
Lindstrom had occasionally pitched from the bullpen earlier in the season, though he entered the year considered the second best pitcher at Binghamton to Yusmeiro Petit, according to Inside Pitch Magazine Online…
“The idea was for him to develop his pitches, which we felt he could do better by being a starter,” Mets VP Jim Duquette told Lauber during his visit to Binghamton. “We know he can do it. He did well in the Arizona Fall League, so this is a good time for it.”…
…‘the good time for it,’ comes on heels of lindstrom allowing three walks, a two-run homer and an error, all in one inning, all to the barrage of boos from the crowd, the night before…hmm, sounds like the mets really do groom their platers for shea while in the minor leagues…
…oh…i kid the organization…i kid…
