BlogLink: Chuck-n-Duck Wants Dunn

by Matthew Cerrone on June 22nd, 2005 at 2:20 pm

At Chuck ‘n’ Duck, Andrew makes a case for the Mets to go after Reds OF-1B Adam Dunn

first off, andrew is on to something because i’ve been told the mets have discussed dunn

from
the sounds of it, though, the reds believe dunn is part of the solution
in cincinatti, and not the problem…he’s going to be
rewarded roughly $15– to-$20 million over the next two seasons in
arbitration, at which point he’s eligible for free agency…therefore, if
the reds feel their next two seasons will be used to rebuild, it could
be in their best interest to move dunn now while
letting another team deal with his arbitration demands down the
road

Andrew suggests a deal similar to Yusmiero Petit, Jae Seo and Matt Lindstrom

because
dunn is the least likely of all cincinatti’s outfielders to be traded,
it’s going to cost his suitor’s a top, young major league ready
starting pitcher and a starting middle-infielder, both of whom are
under contract and making little money…

…frankly, i
don’t think the mets have the pitcher the reds are looking
for…oddly enough, and i hate to do this, but they did in kazmir…and
only jeff keppinger fits the mold of the infielder they seek, which is
a stretch because his time at the majors was limited…

…be creative, omar…b…e…creative…because andrew is right, dunn is a nice fit

Buzz: Minaya Tells ESPN He’s Thinking Short and Long Term

by Matthew Cerrone on June 22nd, 2005 at 12:44 pm

Appearing on ESPN’s Hot List yesterday afternoon, Mets GM Omar
Minaya talked about the National League East, the future of his team
and his love for technological gadgets…

“It’s fair to say, we’re
not only built for 2005…we started something this year that we’re gonna
build beyond 2005 and we have a core group of guys we want to build
around,” Minaya said, when asked about the upcoming trade
deadline.  “We wanna stay in this.  We want to buyers,
hopefully.  But there’s a lot of baseball left and a lot of time
before July 31.”…

“All winning teams, if you look over the past
couple years, have been patient,” Minaya continued.  “Being
patient is going to be important as we put together our team, not only
for this year but in going forward for the future.”

…it’s not what you say, friend, it’s what you do…

…good luck…and we’re all counting you…

Buzz: Heilman the Set-up Man

by Matthew Cerrone on June 22nd, 2005 at 9:39 am

Word around the blue-n-orange campfire is that Aaron Heilman will soon take over the roll as Braden Looper’s set-up man, a position made vacant by Mike DeJean’s release…

i’d almost like to see heilman close out a game, as well…his sinker and mysterious ability to get guys to swing and miss could lend itself well to that job…especially if the mets brass truly believes heilman can’t sustain himself over three or more innings pitched

News: GWilliams Talks and Talks

by Matthew Cerrone on June 22nd, 2005 at 9:24 am

one of my favorite things in baseball is learning about the little things that we, as fans, rarely get to see…because it’s typically these little things that help a team win far more than we realize…

…take for instance gerlad ‘ice’ williams, whom many of us mocked for taking up space on the mets roster

From batting practice through the final out of the game, Gerald Williams spent much of his time talking with Jose Reyes about base running.  He talked about what he does, what Rickey Henderson used to do, and what the youngster’s goals should be and how they should change depending on the count and situation…

Williams also spent a lot of time talking with Doug Mientkiewicz about batting, slumps and ways to shake off negative thoughts…

as fans, we look at williams and see only his weak batting average and wirey frame and wonder why the mets promote him and not a more intriguing youngster…the answer, according to a former player nice enough to email me last night, is because we don’t see his leadership, his experience, his humor and ability to share his wisdom from a long career in a way that makes players laugh, relax and believe in themselves

thanks for the help, ice…keep it up
