Pedro Martinez told the New York Post that he may not make the trip to Detroit for the All-Star game, assuming he is selected. According to Martinez, the regular-season is of the utmost importance, further noting that he wants to do what’s best for the Mets…
…i was thinking about this the other day, actually…pedro always seems to run out of gas during the summer, only to re-gain his strength for september and the post-season…the mets need him now, though…and if he can get ten days off, or so, from missing a start thanks to the break, that could be quite beneficial…
Steve Trachsel, recovering from herniated disc surgery, extended his long-toss program to 180 feet yesterday…
According to Lee Jenkins in the New York Times, Trachsel will throw off the mound at Shea on Saturday for the first time since his surgery, followed by a trip to Port St .Lucie for an evaluation…
Trachsel told reporters that he hopes to be activated by Aug. 1…
…if he can get back for a start or two prior to the trade deadline, it could make a significant difference on how this team approaches the trade market…
David Lennon notes in Newsday that when a news clip ran on the DiamondVision at Shea announcing the release of John Rocker by the Long Island Ducks, the crowd cheered…
…i’ll never get past my hostility towards him, either…he’s just a natural villian…
“Today, I felt great,” Carlos Beltran told reporters. “For the first time, I don’t feel anything. I just hope I can continue to feel like that for the rest of the season.”…
…me too…in fact, tom verducci’s of sports illustrated recently named beltran as a dishonorable mention to the all-bust team…kaz matsui joins beltran on verducci’s team, as well…
“He got out of a lot of jams,” Willie Randolph told reporters about Victor Zambrano’s performance last night. “But, to me, that’s not what it’s all about. He threw a lot of balls. That’s the thing…We got the win. We’ll stay positive on that. But it wasn’t the sharpest game for him.”…
Of the 101 pitches Zambrano threw, 51 were balls. In the fifth inning, he loaded the bases without allowing a hit and had the ball Chase Utley hit been ten inches more to the left, and fair, at least two runs would’ve scored. Instead, he struck out Utley to end the inning allowing no runs to score…
“It’s like walking a tightrope sometimes,” Mike Piazza remarked. “But he has a knack for getting out of trouble…You just hold on and try to ride it out.”…
…hence my nickname for him, houdini…
“There’s urgency,” Cliff Floyd said of the Mets, as he talked with reporters following the team’s 8–3 win over the Phillies. “We need it. At this point, we’ve got to kick it in gear and find some extra energy.”…
…urgency, in june…i love it…there’s something to be said about taking one game at a time, and that no one game is worth more than any other and that it’s a long, long season…but ‘carpe diem,’ my friends…if you want it, as ‘the don’ is saying, go get it now…
Carlos Beltran added, “If we are expecting to win the division, we’ve got to beat the guys who are coming.”…
