Buzz: Trachsel On Pace to Pitch Again Next Wed

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2005 at 8:34 am

Steve Trachsel will throw a simulated start in the bullpen tomorrow, putting him on pace to start Wednesday, September 7 in Atlanta, which just so happens to be the same day the Mets have stopped publicly plotting out their rotation…

i know this is a hot story with mets fans, but i just don’t get it…trachsel has struggled against the marlins, zambrano has not…so zambrano gets this start…

…why am i the only one who has no doubt trachsel will be starting, not only next wednesday, but, every turn in the rotation after this friday

Quote: Wright on Winning

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2005 at 8:26 am

“We never thought for a second we were going to lose,” David Wright confidently told reporters after the game.  “It just seemed like something big was going to happen.”…

you know, neither did i…oddly, and i’m looking at you braden looper, i didn’t worry about losing until the mets actually had the lead

“It sends chills up and down your spine,” Wright continued.  “We’re getting hot at the right time…It’s fun to be a part of when you go out there and expect to win every single night.”

…i think your fans are starting to feel the same way…

Quote: Cameron on the Fans

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2005 at 8:18 am

“It was cool,” Mike Cameron told reporters about bringing the lineup card out to home plate prior to last night’s game and hearing the crowd cheer him on….

“I’ve been getting that from all of the letters I have over in my locker and everything,” he added.  “It’s just a good feeling to have a lot of people supporting you, especially in a city that’s so tough.  It’s unfortunate that I have to get this kind of love in this kind of situation, but sometimes that helps a lot in getting back to normalcy.”…

…mets fans care, in all directions

Carlos Beltran explained to reporters, “We perform for him every single day on this club.”…

News: Piazza May Return by Mid-to-Late Sept

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2005 at 8:16 am

A CT scan confirmed that the broken bone in Mike Piazza’s hand would take six– to eight-weeks to heal, Piazza and Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters prior to last night’s game…

“He’s still going to be technically day-to-day, but the truth is it’s going to be some time before he’s able to go out there and play,” Minaya explained.  “He’s not done for the year,” Minaya was sure to add…

The even-keeled and optimistic Piazza added, “We’ll stay aggressive with the treatment, and there’s going to come a time where I have to strap it on and see what I can do.”…

All morning reports suggest Piazza could return as a pinch-hitter by the middle-end of the month…

i’m thinking a little willis reed new york knicks moment would be nice for mets history…

…and here comes mike

News: Piazza Not Happy About his Wrist

by Matthew Cerrone on August 30th, 2005 at 6:42 pm

Sounding rather dejected, Mike Piazza told MSG before tonight’s game
that he has seen a few doctors, and that an injury, such as the one to
his wrist, will typically take six– to eight-weeks to heal…

Piazza
wouldn’t answer whether or not he’s done for the season, but added that
as soon as he can be effective that he’ll be in the game…

…damn…

…you
know that if he can shoot that sucker up with cortisone and jog out
behind home he will…but, even at that, it sounds like the soonest he
will be back is the last week of the season…

…and for the playoffs

Stat: Scoring First against the Phillies

by Matthew Cerrone on August 30th, 2005 at 4:59 pm

In the New York Post, Mark Hale lists four things the Mets must do to beat the Phillies…

Among them, Hale notes, the Mets must score first, as he writes, “In the 12 games the Mets and Phillies have played this year, the team that scored first won 11 times.”…

…that’s actually been the case in most games this season, mark, as the mets are 45–19 when they score first…

News: Minaya on WFAN

by Matthew Cerrone on August 30th, 2005 at 3:08 pm

Mets GM Omar Minaya recently talked on-air with WFAN about the state of the team…

…to hear the entire interview, keep checking back at wfan.com

…a few things jumped out at me while listening to minaya’s answers…

…one…steve trachsel will not be traded…

…two…fans
that are all hot over zambrano pitching over trachsel should calm
down…it sounds to me, as it did yesterday, that this is strictly a
one-time thing for friday, because zambrano has pitched better against
the marlins than trachsel has…minaya says they will re-evaluate the
rotation on friday, which to me means zambrano heads to the bullpen for
the rest of the season…
