Minors: Teenage-Martinez Out for 4 Weeks

by Matthew Cerrone on May 23rd, 2006 at 7:52 am

Over the weekend, the Star-Ledger reported that the thumb injury to Mets OF Fernando Martinez may be worse than originally expected.  The report suggests that he may miss up to four weeks…

Last season, the Mets signed the 17–year-old Martinez out of the Domincan Republic for $1.4 million…

In 118 at-bats at Single-A, Martinez was hitting .322 with two HR and 11 RBI with 25 strike outs and 11 walks…

He has not played since May 9…

In Baseball America’s Ask BA mailbag from mid-April, Jim Callis was asked where Martinez would be drafted this June were he a high school senior this season.  Callis typed that he believes Martinez would likely be selected in the first ten picks, adding, “He’s better than any high school position player available, and you could argue him against the top college position players.”…

Though he describes Martinez as “an advanced hitter,” Callis notes that the teenager is at least three years away from the Majors…

…this is partly why minaya has not been concerned with trading away the team’s top picks the last few seasons…with such a strong presence in the dominican republic, the team feels it can recoup the lost draft picks with signings like martinez…
