Mets Trade Gonzalez for Reliever Mike Adams

by Anthony De Rosa on May 26th, 2006 at 7:06 pm

The Mets shipped RHP Jeremi Gonzalez to the Brewers on
Friday for relief pitcher Mike Adams.

Gonzalez was DFA’ed after the Mets 5-3
loss to the Phillies on Thursday.

Mike Adams had an 11.57 ERA with the Brewers after pitching
for Triple-A Nashville.

He is 2-4 with a 3.54 ERA and 1 save in
61 career games.

Gonzalez is 26-33 with a 4.92 ERA in 109 games.

Here is RotoWorld‘s take…

Something for nothing. Adams, who entered 2005 as
the Brewers’ closer, had fallen out of favor in Milwaukee, but he can
still be an adequate reliever. He’ll likely head to Triple-A Norfolk
for now. Expect him to get a look in the middle innings at some point
this summer.

…with the aquisition of Orlando Hernandez and Dave Williams along with the fairly impressive start by Alay Soler, it seems that Omar opted to go with Adams to fill the slot in the bullpen vacated by Jorge Julio’s departure. Dave Williams could be a back up starter, or possible long reliver, giving the Mets an additional bullpen option and insurance for their starting rotation. I think this is one of those minor trades Omar is known to make that might not appear to be signifigant now, but may become more clearer as time goes on…

preGame: Mets vs Marlins (Game One)

by Anthony De Rosa on May 26th, 2006 at 6:00 pm

The Game

The Mets (28–18) head to Florida tonight to take on the Marlins (14–31) at Dolphin Stadium this evening, starting at 7:35 pm EDT…

The Mets have beaten the Marlins both times they’ve faced them this season, by a margin of 12-5.

The Pitchers

RHP Pedro Martinez (5–0, 2.82 ERA) takes the mound for the Mets … Pedro has a no decision in each of his last four starts, all where he pitched well enough to win … Pedro is 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in his last four starts against the Marlins … The Marlins are batting .183 against Pedro in their last four meetings … Pedro is off to his best start since 2002, when he went 7-0

RHP Josh Johnson (3-2, 2.62 ERA) starts for the Marlins …  Johnson has experienced futility similar to Pedro’s, receiving no decisions in his last two starts despite allowing only 4 runs in 11 2/3 innings … Johnson has not allowed more than two runs in a game. … Johnson has held opponents to a .200 batting average this season … The Mets have never faced Johnson before.

The Notes

Only two Marlins have hits against Pedro, Miguel Cabrera (1-7) and Dontrelle Willis (1-3) …

Orlando Hernandez is expected to make his Mets debut Sunday …

The Mets have homered in seven straight games and 24 of 27 overall. They have 40 home runs in those 27 games …

Kaz Matsui is 6 for 36 this season with runners in scoring position, a .167 average …

The Mets drew 51,365 yesterday, a Thursday afternoon game. They are averaging 41,097 (last year they avg’ed 34,068 at this same point) and are a game shy of passing 1 million in their 25th of 80 home games …

    Mets relievers are 3rd in ERA (3.47), 3rd in WHIP (1.21), 2nd in K/BB (2.98) and 1st in K/9 (9.35) in the majors…

The Mets latest aquisition, Dave Williams, has a 2.42 ERA first time through a lineup, opponents are batting just .256 against him overall, and is equally effective against righthanders as lefthanders (.248 lh, .258 rh) …

Pedro is 4-1 with a 1.38 ERA with 41 strikeouts in seven games, five starts at Dolphins Stadium.

The Marlins are coming off a three-game sweep against the Cubs in which they scored 23 runs …

UPDATE  : David Wright was a late scratch with back spasms. Jose Valentin will take his place at third.

Read: The Ex-Mets

by D.J. Short on May 26th, 2006 at 2:14 pm

Heading into Florida, the Mets will come face-to-face with some ex-Met prospects, including 1B Mike Jacobs and RHP Yusmeiro Petit

Jacobs is batting .220 this season with five HR and 27 RBI…he has also struck out 38 times in 141 at-bats…

…a
concern on the mets behalf was how jacobs would fare against
left-handed pitching…to which jacobs is hitting to the tune of .132
with 14 strikeouts in 38 at-bats this season…

As for Petit, he was called up on May 13, when RHP Sergio Mitre
was placed on the disabled list…Pitching out of the bullpen, Petit is
currently 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA to go along six strikeouts and no walks
in five innings pitched…

…granted, who knows how gaby hernandez, who is struggling in single-A, and petit will turn out, but is
there anyone questioning these deals right now…i swear, it seems anytime
the mets are rumored to part with a prospect, the fan base immediately
cowers in fear…this kazmir trade has simply made fans gun-shy about
nearly every rumored deal…to be honest, i can’t blame you guys, it
crosses my mind too…but the lo duca and delgado trades were simply
no-brainers…especially if the mets are the last team standing in october…

News: Mets Courting The Great Balbino

by D.J. Short on May 26th, 2006 at 1:43 pm

…i nearly spit out my iced tea when i read Ryan’s Always Amazin this morning…he found an interesting tidbit in the New York Post about the Mets courting a 16-year old third baseman from venezuela… a potential David Wright replacement, pens ryan…good stuff, man…

The Post has learned that Balbino Fuenmayor,
a third baseman from Venezuela, was at Shea yesterday, and Minaya said he is slated to work out for the Mets today.
The GM said Fuenmayor was 16 years old. One major-league team
executive said Fuenmayor is a “high-profile player
who a lot of teams are on currently…”

…balbino, what an awesome baseball name…it’s fate i tell you…

Julio Franco, who’s only start this season was in a May 4th 6-0 victory over the Pirates, in which Delgado sat vs. a lefty, would figure to get the nod…

Cliff Floyd, who has more recently sat out vs. lefties, is expected to start the game…

Jeff Keppinger, currently hitting .287 for Norfolk, was 3-5 last night…

Morning Papers: 2 outta 3 vs. Phils, now it’s Florida.

by Jason Mollica on May 26th, 2006 at 9:58 am

The Mets wrapped up their short six game homestand with a 5-3 loss to the Phillies on Thursday afternoon.  The NY Times Mets beat writer Ben Shpigel pens a column regarding the last six games.  Shpigel says the Mets look like a team heading to the post season.  He writes:

The Phillies and the Braves will certainly contend, but on the whole, they are not as talented. The Mets do not plan on booking their hotel reservations for the playoffs anytime soon, but their recent decisions, especially (Thursday), indicate that they are taking a broader perspective on the season.

The NY Daily News’ Adam Rubin writes about P Jeremi Gonzalez’s day and being DFA’d, while Anthony Reiber at Newsday says despite the loss, things are still looking up.

…if i told you at the beginning of the homestand that the mets would take two of three from the Yanks and Phils, i think most would be happy…

…i was totally frustrated watching jeremi gonzalez pitch yesterday, even though he sort of settled in as the game went on.  it just seemed like he gave the phils every chance in the world to break the game open…

…all in all, four games up on the phils and 4.5 on the braves is fine with me.  this team is showing fans something special.  embrace it…
