Note: Thanks, and I’m Off

by Matthew Cerrone on June 30th, 2006 at 11:59 am

Friends,

On Friday, June 30, I will be getting married, at which point my wife and I will set off on our honeymoon to St. Lucia.  As such, I will not be writing to MetsBlog between now and Monday, July 17.  This site’s excellent, and on-point, guest bloggers, DJ Short, Jason Mollica and Anthony De Rosa of Hot Foot, will do their best to keep you informed and entertained.

Upon my return, it will be two weeks from the Trade Deadline, which always proves to be a quite a busy time around baseball.  I am looking forward to it, as always.

A few quick notes…

TV

On July 8, Mets Weekly will hopefully be running a segment about my wife and I, done in a When Harry Met Sally style, that looks to capture the dynamic between a Yankees fan and Mets fan who are in love…

The show came to our apartment and filmed us in an interview, and is sending us to the Mets-Yankees game on Sunday to tape us in the stadium.  I’m embarrassed yet excited at the same time, as this should make for great footage for our kids to mock us with…

Tees

From what I can gather, I will be allowed to sell MetsBlog t-shirts towards the end of July – finally.  Long story short, as many of you have asked, it became quite clear to me that I first jump through hoops of red tape, to play it safe, before selling these shirts…

It was a lot more work than I anticipated, as my colleague, Blez, from Athletics Nation can attest to.  At any rate, there should be no reason why they are not up on the site by the end of July…

Thanks

Lastly, several readers have sent in warm wishes to me and Dorian on the eve of our wedding – this means a lot to me and I can’t say thank you enough…

This site’s Site Meter says that close to one million hits will roll in this month.  The thing is, at the end of the day it’s just me sitting here banging out words on my laptop.  However, when people send in donations or thank you notes or just e-mails of encouragement and support, it reminds of why I write this site in the first place, which is to not only provide a place for online Mets fans to get news, ideas and opinions, but to also complete a sense of online camaraderie.  Regardless of our backgrounds and differences, we come together every day to cheer on the Mets and that’s a pretty powerful thing – and I thank you for letting me be a part of it…

See you in a couple weeks, be kind to DJ, Jason and Anthony, and Lets Go Mets…

Donate: Cerrone Appreciation Post

by D.J. Short on June 30th, 2006 at 8:00 am

Dear Readers,

As you may know, “Papa Bear” himself, Matthew Cerrone, is getting married today. And as you also may know, MetsBlog is Matt’s full-time job; his only form of income. That said, what better time than now to consider making a small donation…

Advertising revenue can only do so much to help with the site’s various costs, so much like many other major weblogs, Matt accepts reader contributions in an effort to bring MetsBlog coverage to you on a daily basis…

If you like this site and hope to see it remain online, please consider making a financial contribution…

How much to give?  That’s up to you, really, but here’s some facts and figures to consider…

Think about how often you visit this site and realize that a contribution of $40 comes out to just $3.33 a month…$60 works out to only $5.00 a month…You get it…The point is, he’s gonna be a newlywed…And I’m sure he would greatly appreciate your contribution…

To make a donation, refer to the following link

I’m honored to have Matt bring me on board with the opportunity to share my passion for the Mets with all of you…

Let’s show him how much this site means to you, as well…

Thank you for your time, your loyalty for the orange ‘n’ blue and for your support…and as always, Lets Go Mets…

postGame: Red Sox 4 Mets 2

by D.J. Short on June 29th, 2006 at 10:14 pm

The Red Sox completed a sweep of the Mets this evening, with a 4-2 victory at Fenway Park…

If a full recap is what you crave, the Associated Press has your back…

…first off, what a game…i mean, not the result you would have wanted, but after seeing the mets get trounced in the first two games, it was nice to see an entertaining, competitive baseball game again…this is what i was expecting this series to be…

…the red sox are doing absolutely everything right…and even when they make a mistake, like Mike Timlin hanging a breaking ball to Carlos Beltran in the 8th, it gets fouled back into the netting…brutal…beltran had the best at-bats of the night, by the way…no question about it…

…did i really see David Ortiz leg out a double, advance to third base and then score on a sac fly…i mean, i know it happened, that’s what everyone is telling me, but i still don’t believe it…i’m dumbfounded….just dumbfounded…

Coco Crisp, hey…that was an amazing catch…Anderson Hernandez-like air on that grab…totally different game without that catch…all you can do is throw up your hands and look to the sky on something like that…i know i did…

Julio Franco cannot make mistakes like that…a rookie can’t make mistakes like that…that’s when you know it’s not your night…

Tom Glavine pitched admirably tonight, and his changeup was working for him early, but with repeated at-bats throughout that order, his nibbling caught up with him…no strikeouts for tommy and 100 pitches through five innings will not win you many baseball games…especially against schilling at home…

…this club is just plain banged up right now, and so are their fans…lo duca is nicked up, nady is bruised, delgado’s ribs are sore, reyes caused a couple scares, milledge has been humbled…it’s about time to get healthy…maybe it starts with Cliff Floyd returning tomorrow night at yankee stadium…i’m hoping so…

…stay tuned…

by D.J. Short on June 29th, 2006 at 5:23 pm

Carlos Delgado is out of the lineup tonight due to a sore ribcage…

“Instead of making it bad, we’ll let it settle down a bit,” John Delcos of the Journal News quotes Delgado. “Hopefully, I should be all right in a couple of days…”

…so, without any further ado…

As reported on WFAN 660-AM, the lineup for tonight’s game between the Mets and Red Sox…

1. Jose Reyes – SS
2. Paul Lo Duca – C
3. Carlos Beltran – CF
4. David Wright – DH
5. Jose Valentin – 2B
6. Julio Franco –1B
7. Endy Chavez – LF
8. Chris Woodward – 3B
9. Lastings Milledge – RF

…not ideal, to say the least…

by D.J. Short on June 29th, 2006 at 5:14 pm

Curt Schilling (9-2, 3.61 ERA) pitches for the Red Sox…Schilling has allowed 5 ER in 12 IP vs. the NL this season…He is coming off a no decision against the Phillies, in which he allowed 3 ER over 6 IP, with 10 strikeouts…Schilling is 5-0 at home this season with a 2.79 ERA, and has yet to allow a homerun…

The Notes…

The Red Sox have won 11 straight games…

The Red Sox are errorless in their last 14 games…

eMailbag: Why is Everything Tremendous

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 3:41 pm

Ian from Houston, TX, recently sent in the following tremendous e-mail…

“I love your work, you seem to know about things before they happen, and your insight is tremendous…

“Which brings me to my point.  What is the sports world’s preoccupation with the word tremendous?…

“I noticed Willie Randolph used it just the other night in his comments, saying, “he just made a tremendous play”, and you use it all the time – and of course the ‘brilliant,’ but difficult-to-stop-listening-to, Mike and the Maddog use it in every other sentence…

“Why?  Is it really that much bigger than “big”?  According Dictionary.com, it also informally means marvelous, but then why doesn’t anyone ever use the word marvelous? Apparently, it can also mean “capable of making one tremble.”  Surely David Wright’s catch in Philadelphia made nobody tremble, save the young girls sitting down the third base line who were already doing so…

“Anyway, I was hoping to glean something from your tremendous insight.  Thanks for reading this, and thanks for all the work that you do at MetsBlog.”…

…i’ve come to realize that i latch onto a phrase in my writing and then beat it to death…the other day, having never used it before on this site, ever, i wrote “to say the least” four times…i have no idea why…my guess is that because we hear sports writers and pundits saying ‘tremendous’ so much, that the rest of say it, and so they say it again, and so on…you’ve made me aware of this now, and i suspect i will not write it again for a while…in fact, i sense an outbreak of ‘outstanding’ on the way, so beware of that getting beaten to death starting now
