News: Mets Beat Yanks…In Ratings

by D.J. Short on June 29th, 2006 at 2:33 pm

An interesting tidbit from the New York Times this morning:

“For the first time in prime time, a Mets game carried by SportsNet New York had a higher rating than a Yankees broadcast on the YES Network. On Tuesday night, the Mets-Red Sox game generated a 4.7 rating, or 350,000 local television households, and the Yankees-Braves game produced a 4.1 rating (305,000 TV homes). This is SNY’s first season and its rating for Mets game is up 71 percent to 2.6 from the same period on Fox Sports New York last year.”

…maybe, just maybe, the tide is slowly turning…but this week’s embarassment probably won’t help push it over the top…

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 10:55 am

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin writes that Tom Glavine will pass on pitching in the All-Star Game, assuming he is selected to participate.,.

Both Glavine and Pedro Martinez will pitch the final two days of the first half.

Glavine, on the All-Star Game, as quoted by Rubin…

“I don’t see myself pitching on one day’s rest. It’s just the way it goes…

“If I was faced with the question of, ‘Hey, we’ll skip your start on Sunday so you can start the All-Star Game.’ No way.  I wouldn’t do that.”…

…good

Vote: Reyes Slipping in All-Star Ballot

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 10:53 am

As it stands, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Paul Lo Duca continue to rank as starters for this season’s All-Star Game, to be held on July 11 in Pittsburgh…

According to the Associated Press, the Pirates have installed computers in their stadium to facilitate voting for their players – and it appears to be working.  Pirates OF Jason Bay has taken the lead from Beltran as the outfield’s top vote getter, while Pirates SS Jack Wilson is now roughly a few thousand votes behind Reyes as the team’s starting shortstop…

Today is the last day of voting

Again, today is the last day of voting…

Go to MLB.com, and do what you can to help keep Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Lo Duca as starters…

from what i understand, you can only vote 25 times…but it’s 25 times per e-mail that you register with

Quote: Martinez has a Heart

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 9:48 am

In his first start against the Red Sox since leaving and signing with the Mets, Pedro Martinez allowed six earned runs over three innings while walking two and striking out one…

Martinez, prior to the game, as quoted by the Bergen Record, when reminded that Roger Clemens struck out 16 Red Sox in his first return to Fenway…

“Don’t expect that from me.”…

…in other words, the game was over before it even began…

…i mean, what is this crap…honestly, i am very, very disappointed in pedro…check out the other quotes, and then i’ll continue my rant

Martinez, following last night’s loss, as quoted in a variety of newspapers…

“I did get caught up in it, and it put me off a little bit.  I lost my focus.  I got caught up in the emotions and wasn’t mentally prepared to do what I had to do…

“It meant a lot more than obviously the game.  I think not even a win would give me more satisfaction than the reception I got from the fans.  Not only the fans, but the players, too…

“I’m just really happy I was able to come back.  I didn’t have my A-game today and they took advantage of it.  I couldn’t make pitches and you just tip your hat, let it go and get ready for the next one.”…

…i think not even a win would give me more satisfaction…

…excuse me…that is garbage…

…listen, i am sure it’s emotional, and i’m sure it was distracting, and that’s fine, but i was under the impression that part of what makes pedro so great is his ability to see past that, get in character, hype himself up by any means necessary and then start mowing guys down, friend or foe…

…this softee stuff doesn’t sit well with me…he has looked hurt and uncomfortable for weeks now…and this display last night was just sad to watch…

…man, this series cannot end quick enough…baseball is war…start acting like it

Red Sox 1B Kevin Youkilis, as quoted by the Daily News…

“It was tough to watch that happen on a night when he gets a greeting like that, but we’re here to win…

“Hopefully we’ll see him again in the World Series and put another eight runs on the board.”…

…exactly…now that’s the attitude…you shake hands before the game, and then get to work, which by the way, at this level, is all about winning – not emotional satisfaction…

The Mets are 3–7 in Martinez’s last 10 starts…

…the buzz around martinez is that his hip is bugging him, and that it’s messing with the torque he gets in his delivery…i don’t know what it is, but it’s something…something is up…

…yet, they keep winning…here’s the thing, what if the team drops a few straight games when Tom Glavine pitches, or the back-end of the rotation can no longer hold it’s own…it’s a large lead, but, if you recall, the red sox had a double-digit lead over the yankees last season, and lost the division, and the o’s were 42–28 at one point, only to finish 14 games below .500…

…the mets haven’t won anything yet…this team needs to get that eye of the tiger back, and soon…

…man, where’s Jose Guillen when you need him…

Quote: Milledge on Fly Ball, Again

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 9:21 am

With the Mets down 2–0 in the first, and two runners on base, Lastings Milledge dropped his second fly ball in two nights in front of the Green Monster allowing two runs to score, while allowing the inning to continue…

Milledge, on the play, as quoted by a variety of newspapers…

“I just missed it.  I just didn’t come up with the catch.  I don’t know what else you want me to say.  I didn’t come up with the catch…

“I dropped it, all right, that’s it…

“I was under it.  I looked a whole lot better than (Tuesday) night.  I knew where this ball was.  I didn’t come up with the catch.”…

hmm, it reads like the kid is getting testy

Health: Floyd’s Ankle

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2006 at 9:13 am

Cliff Floyd was 2–for-4 while playing seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Port St. Lucie yesterday…

Floyd will play today with the Brooklyn Cyclones while rehabbing his ankle…

…the buzz around floyd is that he’ll be activated prior to tomorrow’s game against the yankees, or saturday’s at the latest, at which point Lastings Milledge is expected to be sent back to norfolk

postGame: Red Sox 10 Mets 2

by D.J. Short on June 28th, 2006 at 10:08 pm

The Mets dropped their second straight to the Red Sox, by the score of 10-2 at Fenway Park this evening…

For all your recap needs, ride the wave of the Associated Press

…yikes…well, the air was pretty much out of the balloon by the end of the first inning…frankly, i’m glad it wasn’t a playoff game…

…a few thoughts and then i’ll set you guys loose…

…is it time to be seriously concerned about pedro…i really don’t know, but i don’t like what i’m seeing lately…i’d like to believe that it was just a mental breakdown, what with the emotions of his return, i really would…but honestly, what i see is a lack of execution…simply an inability to spot pitches and put batters away on a consistent basis, like we have been accustomed to…whether it’s because of the toe and accumulated bumps and bruises, i dont know…however, walking five vs. the reds last week was troubling to me, despite the win…

…as for Lastings Milledge, once again, he had a pretty awful game…you gotta believe that if Xavier Nady was capable of starting that Endy Chavez just might have gotten a look out there tonight…on the other hand, if willie was to take milledge out of left, it probably wouldn’t have helped his confidence either…hence, the difficult job of managing a rookie…handle with care…

…tip your cap to Josh Beckett…he
might not be my favorite pitcher in the league, based on past mets experiences…but he came to play
tonight…yeah, two home runs will show up in the box score, but keeping
the base runners to a minimum will make it hurt a lot less…

…who thought it was a good idea to bring Mr. Met to beantown…call it sacrilege, but the mets have been doing just fine on the road without him, thank you…

…i wanna give some credit to
Darren Oliver again, because it should not be overlooked…while he did give up two runs over three innings, i respect his ability to come into a game which might seem like a lost cause and eat up innings for his team in preparation for the next day…that’s an under-rated thing…having heilman and sanchez ready for tomorrow could be huge…let’s hope, anyways…

…pick yourself up, dust yourself off…and trust in your ace…we’re looking at you, tom…
