At Baseball America, Jim Callis breaks down Omar Minaya’s acquisitions of RHP Oliver Perez and RHP Roberto Hernandez for OF Xavier Nady…
Among many other intriguing remarks, Callis says of Perez…
“Few lefties in baseball have the ceiling of the 24-year-old Perez…he’s a worthwhile gamble for the Mets. Perez, who avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $1.9 million contract, will be arbitration-eligible again during the off-season.”…
The gang at Baseball America weighs in on the entire day’s action…
…the buzz from new york has perez reporting to triple-a, though he’ll likely be called up to shea in september…
Mets GM Omar Minaya recently concluded an interview with WFAN…
According to Minaya, Duaner Sanchez may be able to pitch this season, he just doesn’t know yet. It will depend on whether Sanchez needs surgery on his separated shoulder. He acknowledged that the injury to Sanchez may have forced him to overpay when acquiring RHP Roberto Hernandez and LHP Oliver Perez, i.e., OF Xavier Nady…
Minaya says he felt he was close to acquiring a premium pitcher but it never materialized…
Lastings Milledge will be called up from Norfolk to replace Nady, Minaya explains, noting that the youngster will most likely split time with Endy Chavez in right-field…
…i contacted Jayson Stark from ESPN, who informed me that the padres and mets had a deal set for RHP Scott Linebrink, but san diego pulled it back at the last minute because they believed they were not getting enough in return…
This site, CBS Sportsline and ESPN News had been reporting that a deal was set to take place that would have sent Linebrink to the Mets for RHP Oliver Perez and RHP Heath Bell…
…for what it’s worth, like cbs and espn, i had also heard this deal was ready to rock, but the padres were wise to yank it back, which i understand occured a few moments before the deadline expired…
At his blog for the Newsday, David Lennon informs us that Carlos Beltran has been named Co-Player of the Week for the National League along with Phillies 2B Chase Utley…
…wow…
…i am fried…
…seriously, you should see me right now…my hair is a mess, i’m ghost white, i have food on my shirt and there is coffee spilled all over my desk…and my laptop is pretty close to melting…
…what a day…
…if you’re just tuning in, here is what went down for the mets…
…we woke up to rumors about the mets talking with the giants about RHP Jason Schmidt and the astros about RHP Roy Oswalt…
…around 9 am, we learned that the mets would not trade Lastings Milledge for schmidt, who espn reported was certainly available at around 9:30 am…
…at 11:30 am, espn reported that the astros refused to trade oswalt, and it became clear that talks with houston were most likely about RHP Brad Lidge, not oswalt, since houston’s owner demanded that lidge be traded, as richard justice reported around 12:30 pm…
…also at 12:30 pm, i alluded that a mets pitcher in the bullpen would be going the disabled list, though a name was not included…later in the day, around 3 PM, ken rosenthal informed us that Duaner Sanchez was in a car accident and will be gone for the season…ouch…
…by 2 pm, it became clear that schmidt was unattainable, as the cost was just too high, as the mets clearly were looking for a pitcher to replace sanchez in the bullpen…
…at 2:45, lidge was pulled off the market…
…by 3:15 PM we learned from espn that the mets traded OF Xavier Nady to the pirates for RHP Roberto Hernandez and LHP Oliver Perez…
…a few moments later, espn news and cbs sportsline began reporting that perez would be sent to san diego with RHP Heath Bell for RHP Scott Linebrink…i heard a similar rumor, and wrote about it, as well…
…turns out it was premature, as the deal was yanked off the table…
…in the span of 24–hours, the mets lost sanchez for the season, and traded nady for hernandez and perez…they are expected to promote milledge to replace nady…
…what a day…
If you’ve yet to do so, be sure and vote in this week’s MetsBlog Fan Confidence Rating by using the poll to the left…
…thanks…
…as best i can gather, RHP Heath Bell and LHP Oliver Perez are still on the mets, and RHP Scott Linebrink is still on the padres…
…it appears both CBS Sportsline and ESPN News are pulling back any story that these players were traded, now that the mets are telling media that no other deals will be announced today…in fact, cbs changed the language in their column to read that the deal is pending, as opposed to completed as it initially suggested…
…my eyes are shot…
…the buzz from the westin hotel has the mets not sending RHP Heath Bell and LHP Oliver Perez to the padres for RHP Scott Linebrink…
…a few posts ago, i wrote that the team planned to make such a deal…a few moments later, CBS Sportsline and ESPN News began reporting that the deal was done…
…as of 4:36 PM, they continue to do so…
…odd…
…stay tuned…
According to ESPN News, the Nationals will not trade 2B Alfonso Soriano…
They will instead look to sign him to a contract extension…
…egg, meet Jim Bowden’s face…ouch…
According to CBS Sportsline, the Cubs have traded RHP Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for SS Cesar Iszturis…
The Dodgers will also acquire SS Julio Lugo from the Devil Rays for 2B Joel Guzman, reports ESPN News…
