Note: 12 Consecutive Errorless Games

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2006 at 8:35 am

By not booting a single ball last night, the Mets tied a club record from 1999 with their 12th consecutive errorless game…

This season, the Mets are 52–20 during games when they do not make an error, a .722 winning percentage compared to their overall winning percentage of .626…

Jose Valentin, as quoted by the New York Times

“You hear that we score seven runs a game and have all these great hitters, but that doesn’t mean much if you give all the runs back.”…

…especially in the playoffs

Quote: Willie on Wright, Who’s Not George Brett

by Matthew Cerrone on August 31st, 2006 at 8:25 am

Having driven in just eight runs in his previous 18 games, David Wright has eight RBI in his last two games in Coors Field, during which he’s 5–for-9 with two strikeouts, a stolen base, a triple and a HR…

Willie Randolph, on Wright, talking with reporters after last night’s win…

He was getting away from his approach.  He was swinging at bad pitches…

“Remember, he’s still young and learning how to hit…

“He’s not George Brett, yet.”…

true, true…we forget just how young wright is, because he is such an advanced hitter…but aside from the physical act of swinging a bat, which he need not work on at all, wright is still learning how to care for his body, how to prep for games during a long season, how to sustain himself, how to adjust to pitchers who are adjusting to him, and so on…

…the thing is, i think we, the fans, have total faith in him, and obviously the team does, too, as we all should since he has proven nothing short of being a stand-up kid, who works hard, wants to win, is level-headed and loves to be on this team…

…welcome back, wright

by the way, this picture of him, from the new york post, is weird

postGame: Mets 11 Rockies 3

by Matthew Cerrone on August 30th, 2006 at 11:45 pm

The Mets defeated the Rockies by a score of 11 to 3 at Coors Field tonight…

For a full recap, comb over the Associated Press…

a few thoughts…

…yeah, um, Dave Williams is pretty good, not great, but good…why aren’t we talking about him more…he’s now 2–0 in three starts with a 3.78 ERA, with just two walks and 11 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched…not bad…also, and forgive me for saying this, but he reminds me a lot of Mike Hampton, not just because hampton wore the same number as williams while with the mets, but because of their similar push, fling-it, left-handed, style delivery, with the straight back, and the dipping, extremely effective curve ball…it’s a very familiar look…

…instead of seeking the best offensive outfielders, maybe colorado should look to acquire the best defensive outfielders, instead…wow…those guys look lost out there…or, maybe they should go with three infielders, while adopting the roamer position used in softball…something…anything to keep those guys from running in circles all night…

…in case you forgot, because i know i did, the last time Julio Franco got a hit before tonight was last friday, prior to that it was august 3…

…i bet Jose Valentin will go to bed tonight thinking he should sign as a free-agent with colorado this off-season, after having hit two solo home runs within an hour of one another…

…only Jose Reyes, who is addicted to smiling, could laugh after having a triple and an RBI taken away from him by an umpire who reversed a call…

…if David Wright could play defensive for a full year as he has over the last month, he could win a Gold Glove…

speaking of wright, i’m glad to see him hit a grand slam when given the opportunity to bat with the bases loaded, especially since the two batters ahead of him reached base on walks…the pitcher tossed a meatball down the plate, and wright, looking calm and cool, clobbered it…

…another nice win, gentlemen…stay focused…

News: Orioles Claim C Ardoin

by D.J. Short on August 30th, 2006 at 6:43 pm

Just a follow-up on a story posted here earlier today…

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports that the Orioles have acquired C Danny Ardoin from the Rockies. The Mets were rumored to be interested in Ardoin and INF Luis Gonzalez

…clearly the mets found a better alternative for a defensive backstop in Michael Nickeas in the Victor Diaz deal today and didn’t have to part with a power arm to get him…some say nickeas could eventually develop into a solid number two catcher…
