The AP reports that Steve Trachsel has left the team due to an undisclosed family issue. He has been scratched from his scheduled start tomorrow and his return is not immediately clear…
Oliver Perez is expected to make the start tomorrow…
…stay tuned for more…all the best, steve…
ESPN.com reports that Pedro Martinez will have rotator cuff surgery next week
and be out eight months. The injury is expected to sideline him
until at least June of next season…
The Game…
The Pitchers…
RHP Beltran Perez (2-0, 1.50 ERA) pitches for the Nats…He held the Mets to two runs on four hits over 6.1 IP for the victory on Monday…He has allowed only three runs in 18 IP since his callup, but has walked ten batters…Righties are hitting .107 vs. Perez…Jose Reyes was 2-for-5 vs. Perez on Monday…
The Numbers…
Carlos Delgado is 5-for-14 (.357) with 3 doubles and 4 RBI on the roadtrip…
Alfonso Soriano is hitless in his last 16 at-bats and is batting .204 with just 3 HR this month…
Billy Wagner has converted his last 18 save opportunities and 26 out of his last 27 — Last night, he reached 40 saves for the second time in his career…
The Bleachers…
…enjoy…
In Newsday, David Lennon notes that a sign that read, “KNOW YOUR PLACE, ROOK!,” signed by, “YOUR TEAMMATES,” hung above Lastings Milledge’s locker following last night’s win…
Lennon goes on to write…
“Milledge, as usual, ate dinner alone seated at his locker, facing inward, as the rest of the Mets crowded the clubhouse cafeteria. Someone had hidden Milledge’s street clothes, and one player thought they had been replaced by a dress.”…
According to Lennon, Milledge ‘mouthed off’ to a veteran teammate in Atlanta…
…yikes…
…well, this is good, right…i mean, check him and if he keeps doing whatever it is he is clearly doing then the team will know what the kid is all about…if he gets the message and behave as wish he would then it’s a win-win…
…i hope…
In his most recent Under the Knife column at Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes that a Willis Reed style return for Pedro Martinez during the playoffs is nothing more than a wish for Mets fans…
Among other notes, Carroll writes of Martinez’s injury…
“Martinez injured the leg in a classic compensation manner. Not only was Martinez dropping his arm angle to try and get hitters out, video shows that he significantly changed his stride and landing spot. Pitching is such a kinetic chain event that the weakest link – or the exposed weakness – will often break…
“I’m more worried about the arm angle that Martinez showed. The history of Martinez’s shoulder is much more worrisome than even a severe calf strain. While the Mets ace should have plenty of time to recover by spring training, I’m hoping that if he drops his arm angle next year, it’s because it’s desirable, not because it’s necessary.”…
In the New York Times, Michael S. Schmidt writes of how players, such as Heath Bell, take the subway to the stadium…
…speaking of bell, i’ve heard from a few people that he and other players recieved letters from mets management telling them they will be billed for all damages done to the team’s clubhouse during their division winning, post-game celebration…the letter then informed them it was a joke, concluding with, “welcome to the playoffs.”…
…nice…
Though he did not play, Cliff Floyd rejoined the Mets last night after having traveled to New York for a cortisone shot to his ankle…
…the buzz from dc is that floyd will play today against the nationals…
During last night’s win, John Maine allowed just two earned runs over six innings while striking out three…
In his last six starts, dating back to late-August, Maine is 3–2 with a 3.63 ERA…
Meanwhile, during the same time frame, Steve Trachsel is 2–3 with a 4.81 ERA…
…by the way, though willie has yet to name a starter for game three of the national league division series, the buzz from dc is that trachsel appears fairly confident that he will get the nod…
At NY Sports Day, Scoop Malinowski conducts a Q & A with Pedro Martinez about a variety of subjects, including his first job, his favorite music and the qualities he most admires in people…
By the way, according to Martinez, his nickname is Cobra…
Carlos Beltran, on his health, as quoted by Steve Popper of the Bergen Record…
“I feel like 80 percent. Every day I just feel a little bit better, but not quite where I want to feel. I want to be able to run 100 percent without feeling anything. Some days I feel tightness, but no pain. It feels weird.”…
…from what i can gather, beltran has been playing with what was described to me as, “heavy legs,” since the middle of the season, and all it has really impacted has been his ability to steal bases…
