According to the Associated Press, Carlos Delgado has decided against filing for a trade demand, a right granted to players who had been traded in the first year of long-term deal.
Mets GM Omar Minaya informed reporters of Delgado’s decision by conference call this evening.
Delgado hit .265 with 38 homers and 114 RBI in his first season with the Mets. According to his current deal, Delgado is owed $14.5 million in 2007 and $16 million in 2008, with a $12 million option for 2009 that carries a $4 million buyout.
…welcome back, carlos…
According to a variety of reports, though there is a mutual option in his contract for 2007, Tom Glavine will either sign a new deal with the Mets, to include 2007, or he will become a free-agent and return to Atlanta.
On November 1 and 2, the Daily News reported that Glavine and the Mets were close to agreeing on a new two-year, $25 million contract.
…wow…that’s a lotta loot for a 41–year-old pitcher…i’m not saying he isn’t worth it, especially considering the situation with pedro, but, wow, nevertheless…
Meanwhile, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Glavine could expect a less-expensive salary to be offered by the Braves.
Glavine’s agent, Gregg Clifton, told the New York Post on November 1 that his client hopes to return to the Mets, while the New York Times reported on October 31 that re-signing Glavine is Omar Minaya’s top priority this off-season.
…nearly every mets insider will tell you that glavine’s decision will inevitably come down to what is best for his family…from what i can gather, however, he and his family like living in connecticut, and have enjoyed their time in new york…so, it’s not like there is an overwhelming tug on his to return to atlanta, where his children still go to school…
…i suspect glavine will be back…especially considering that if he isn’t, he’ll be on the braves…
Pedro Martinez underwent successful rotator-cuff surgery during early-October. Early reports suggest Martinez is expected to miss at least the first half of next season.
…for what it’s worth, there is some buzz coming from shea that suggests martinez could actually be back before that, because he is feeling far less post-surgery pain then he should be…
…however, i don’t think we will have a true read on this until pedro starts throwing and gets down and dirty…
Meanwhile, speaking to the Associated Press from the Dominican Republic on November 3, Martinez said that if his shoulder does not return to full strength he would consider retiring.
…this story garnered a ton attention, as you’d expect…of course, we all know pedro speaks his mind, and this is an honest response to a legit question…i don’t believe it’s his first option, though…
Martinez, on his recovery, as quoted by the AP:
“It’s getting better and progress is above all what is hoped for. To go back I have to recover. I have to be healthy. But if God doesn’t want that, then I would have to think about giving it all up.”
Appearing on WFAN after the season’s final loss to the Cardinals, the team’s GM, Omar Minaya, explained that he will attack this off-season not thinking of Martinez as part of his rotation going in to next season. This way, when Martinez returns towards the end of the summer, it will be like making a major acquisition.
…this is wise…
…actually, it’s the only way to approach this coming season…
In Newsday, on November 5, Martinez’s agent, Fern Cuza, is quoted as saying his client is in good spirits and confident that his shoulder is progressing well.
Martinez has two more years and $25.5 million remaining on a four-year, $53-million contract.
Mets OF Cliff Floyd officially filed for free agency on October 28.
Following his team’s final game on October 19, Floyd told reporters that he hopes to return to the Mets next season.
Floyd underwent successful surgery to repair his strained left Achilles’ tendon on October 25.
…the last time floyd had this surgery, after 2003, it was followed by four months of rehab…of course, he was five-years younger, so we have to assume this one will be more difficult to return from…
…from what i can gather, he will not return to baseball-related activities until after the new year…
According to Lynn Henning, in the Detroit News, on October 28, the Tigers could have interest in Floyd, along with free-agent OF Alfonso Soriano, OF Carlos Lee OF and David Dellucci.
Meanwhile, on October 30, the Washington Post noted that the Orioles may have an interest in Floyd, as well as Lee and the Phillies 1B-OF Pat Burrell.
…the buzz from shea suggests the mets may offer floyd an invitation to spring training, but that’s the best he can hope for from them at this point…it’s going to be tough for him to expect much from any team, actually, since teams will most certainly question the state of his ankle having not seen him in action since the surgery…
As it stands, Willie Randolph is signed on to be the team’s manager through next season, the final year of his original three-year, $1.875-million deal.
On Saturday, October 22, Randolph returned to Shea Stadium to pack up for the off-season, where he briefly talked with reporters about the idea of negotiating a new contract with the Mets.
Randolph explained…
“It would be nice, but I haven’t talked to them about it…I feel like I’ve done a nice job since I’ve been here. I would love to be the leader of this ballclub for a long time, whatever that means, and I’m just excited about the progress we’ve made moving forward.”…
According to Newsday, Omar Minaya told reporters on November 3 that he has since initiated such a dialogue with Randolph.
…really, this is a formality, it would seem…i mean, clearly willie has earned the opportunity to lead this team, and while he may not be perfect, though, who is, he is as close to perfect for this specific group of players as i can think of…
…lead on, willie…
On November 3, MLB announced that Mets OF Carlos Beltran was rewarded a 2006
Rawlings National League Gold Glove Award.
This is Beltran’s first Gold Glove Award. He made just two errors in center field in 2006, a .995 fielding percentage.
For a full list of this season’s Gold Glove winners, go to MLB.com.
…good for carlos…however, these awards are silly to me, given that we all know Endy Chavez is the best defensive outfielder on the mets, and i suspect beltran would agree…the thing is, endy does not play every day, thus he is not eligible to win a gold glove…
…also, Omar Vizquel took home the hardware for shortstop, when, at this point in their career, i think Jose Reyes may be better in the field…however, it’s omar, and his reputation proceeds him…
