…i do not believe the event is open to the public, just media…
Governor Pataki, Mayor Bloomberg, Fred Wilpon, Willie Randolph, Jose Reyes, David Wright and John Maine, among others, will be in attendance.
The event will air live on SNY.
At FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal reports that Mets third-base coach Manny Acta may be close to accepting an offer to manage the Washington Nationals.
At Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes that the Mets are very close to a deal with Citigroup for the naming rights of the team’s new stadium.
…for those who missed it, we discussed this here, earlier today…
…here’s the best part of newsday’s report…
Davidoff writes the following:
“The web site hotfootblog.com reports that a sign on the grounds of the new stadium reads, “CitiField: Coming in 2009.”
…nice…look at the hat tip to anthony and hot foot…fantastic…davidoff could easily have gone with the standard, ‘an internet report,’ but instead he referenced the blog, which is great to see…
As I mentioned earlier today, the Mets will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking for their new ballpark in the Shea Stadium Picnic Area Tent at 11 am on Monday, November 13.
…i do not believe the event is open to the public, just media…

Mets SS Jose Reyes and OF Carlos Beltran have made MLB’s Silver
Slugger team for the National League, according to MLB.com.
“Silver Slugger Awards were determined by a vote of MLB managers and coaches who selected the opposing players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in the American and National Leagues,” explains the report.
…it’s a great list…baseball has a bright future…i only hope they learn to market these young stars far better then they seem to be…
As expected, Tom Glavine declined his $7.5 million option, reports the Associated Press.
The report also suggests that the Mets are expected to turn down the $14 million option before the Nov. 20 deadline.
…i suspect the mets will turn thier key on this by sunday, allowing glavine to become a free agent when the rest of the league’s free agents are allowed to talk with other teams…
…this by no means indicates that glavine will return to the braves…however, by officially entering the free-agent market he can finally get a true sense of what to expect from atlanta…at that point, he can accuratly weigh his options…as i mentioned this morning, the sense i am getting is that the longer this drags out the less likely he’ll return to queens…
According to Jon Heyman at SI.com, the Yankees have traded OF Gary Sheffield to the Tigers for minor-league pitchers RHP Humberto Sanchez, RHP Kevin Whelan and RHP Anthony Claggett.
Detroit will extend Sheffield’s contract for an additional two years, writes Heyman.
At his blog for the Journal News, the always-pragmatic Peter Abraham puts forth a bit of skepticism with regards to ESPN’s report that the Red Sox may be rewarded the rights to talk with Japanese RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Among other notes, Abraham points out that investing $90 million in a pitcher would be “a total abandonment of their values.” Also, Abraham points out that Olney’s use of “may have,” in his report, with regards to Boston’s involvement, leaves much room for interpretation.
…this is so crazy…
…i love when the wheels come off the baseball world, like this…
…i had a reader send me a translated version of a report out of taiwain that suggests the Yankees will get top honors in the quest for matsuzaka, of course the translated text references the “respective west military lion,” and talks about, “snatching the human first step the success,” whatever that means…
…i mean, this is what we’ve come to, folks, trying to learn a new language in less than a day…
…unreal…

At ESPN.com, Buster Olney reports that the Red Sox may have posted the top bid for the right to negotiate with Japanese RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka.
According to Olney, the Red Sox may have submitted a bid between $38 million and $45 million.
…wow…
…also, i have picked up a bit of buzz from a few places suggesting that the number of teams to make a bid is a bit higher than we may have initially thought…we’re talking upwards of ten teams, maybe more, and that if any team won this thing it was going to be either boston, texas or arizona, not that it really matters at this point, though, since i suspect nobody knows what they are talking about…
…three in-the-loop readers of this site, all of whom work for rather reputable financial institutions in new york city, have mentioned to me that the mets will make an announcement on monday revealing the name of their new stadium, which is set to open its doors in 2009…
…i put a call in to the team’s media department, who naturally denied all of this…
…meanwhile, at hot foot, anthony reveals information from two readers, as well, suggesting the stadium will be called CitiField, which is said to currently appear on a sign in front of the new building’s contruction site…
…for more on the rumored name change, check out hot foot…
…if these rumors are correct and they go with CitiField, that’s not awful, which i assume derives from a sponsorship by CitiBank…i mean, citi, new york city, it’s not far off…i could hear people saying, ‘i’m going to the citi for a game tonight,’ which is sort of goofy, but acceptable…
…i think i speak for most mets fans, though, in saying that i just hope the name doesn’t change every other season, like other major-league parks seem to do…that’s just obnoxious…i hate being reminded of how major league baseball revolves around the dollar bill…i know it does, i’m not naive, but the constantly changing corporate titles make it harder to ignore…
…just pick a name and stick with it…
The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros have reached a one-year, $5
million agreement with 2B Craig Biggio, citing unnamed Major League Baseball officials.
…this means two things…
…one, the astros will no longer be competing with the mets for a second baseman…and two, biggio can continue to use that mangled, dented, pine-tar-encrusted astros batting helmet that he has made so famous…
