According to ESPN News, the Rockies and 2B-SS Kaz Matsui have agreed to a one-year deal worth roughly $2 million.
In 113 at-bats spanning 32 games with the Rockies, Matsui hit .345 with 19 RBI and just eight strikeouts.
…good for you, kaz…good luck…
…there is a ton of buzz in chicago that the White Sox will look to trade at least one of RHP Freddy Garcia, RHP Javier Vazquez, LHP Mark Buehrle and RHP Jose Contreras, a) to free up salary, and b) to make room in their rotation for 23–year-old RHP Brandon McCarthy…
In the last three seasons, Garcia, 30, has won at least 13 games while making at least 31 starts with a combined 4.07 ERA. He will earn $10 million in 2007, the final year of a three-year, $27 million contract.
The 30–year-old Vazquez has made at least 32 starts every season dating back to 2000, during which he has posted an ERA under 4.00 only three times. He has spent the last three years with three different teams going 36–37 with a 4.71 ERA. Any team that acquires Vazquez will need to pay just $9.5 million of the $12.5 million owed to him in 2007.
Since 2001, Buehrle, 27, had won 14 or more games in five straight seasons before falling short in 2006 with just 12, when he posted a career-worst 4.99 ERA. Entering 2006, Buehrle’s career ERA was 3.63 spanning 172 starts. The White Sox recently picked up his $9.5 million option for 2007.
At FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal cites rival executives as saying that if the White Sox are to make such a trade it will happen sooner than later.
…of the bunch, i could envision a scenario in which the mets acquired vazquez, since he has been linked to Omar Minaya in the past…however, buehrle is the better fit, since he is younger and lefty, which are two things the mets are clearly targeting…
At his weekly mailbag for MLB.com, Braves beat writer Mark Bowman is asked whether he thinks Tom Glavine could end up re-joining the Braves in 2007.
Bowman writes…
“As much as I’d like to see Glavine back in Atlanta to win his 300th game, I just don’t see it happening. The Braves don’t need him as much as the Mets and won’t be able to financially match the offers made by New York.”
Here are the two most noteworthy photos from today’s groundbreaking ceremony for Citifield, the club’s new stadium set to open in 2009.
…here is a series of people, including the mayor, Fred and Jeff Wilpon, David Wright, Jose Reyes, John Maine, others, digging in to the ground, as a way to honor the start of construction…
…here you see a mock-up of what the front of the stadium will look like…
…you know what, i dig it…
…i mean, money aside, i would have gone a different way, i am sure…however, it’s not my stadium, and i suspect i will grow to like this…
…fact is, when it comes to this new stadium, i am far more concerned with how long it will take for me to get food, how long it will take to get to and from the bathroom, and how long it will take for the team to win a championship, then i am with the name outside…
The gathering has now enetred the Q&A portion of the event.
Fred Wilpon announced that a statue of Jackie Robinson will be featured either in the stadium’s rotunda, or directly in front of the stadium, as a way to honor his accomplishments in society and in baseball. The famous Robinson quote, “A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives,” will appear on the statue.
David Wright has apparently adopted my shave-every-four-days method of grooming.
According to Wilpon, the relationship between Citicorp and the Mets extends past just the name on the stadium.
…which i assume must mean you will see the team’s players hocking citibank cards, etc…hey, maybe they’ll do an advertisement like the indians did for american express in the movie Major League…
The Mets management and owners, a collection of New York politicians, MLB executives, as well as David Wright, Jose Reyes and John Maine, are
all sitting at a long table, with a podium in the middle, with a giant mural of the new stadium pinned up behind them all.
…this is brutal, man…you’re not missing much…it’s one bad speech after another, with a ton of brooklyn dodger references…
…Fred Wilpon is speaking now, so i suspect this means will get going to the whole shovel-in-the-dirt moment we’ve all been waiting for…
…my television ison, i’ve tuned to SportsNet NY, and instead of seeing live coverage of the announced CitiField Groundbreaking Ceremony, sny
is showing an infomercial for the Total Gym, an exercise machine endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley…
…ugh…though, i must admit, brinkley is in tremendous shape…impressive…
…a scroll on the bottom of the screen notes the groundbreaking coverage will begin soon…
…Update…11:25 AM…
…maybe it’s the blonde hair, i don’t know, but i have a sudden urge to buy this stupid machine…
…SportsNet NY has five minutes to switch coverage from this informerical to the advertised groundbreaking or i am buying a Total Gym and sending the bill…
…Update…11:29 AM…
…excellent…here we go…live coverage is on, hosted by Matt Yallof and Ron Darling and Chris Cotter.
…the word out of japan is that the Seibu Lions will meet in japan on monday night, EST…meaning, they will likely make an announcement at the last possible minute, say 5 pm EDT on tuesday, regarding whether to accept the high bid for the rights to talk with RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka…
…this story is starting to give me a headache…
…Update…11:00 AM…
…in this initial post, i wrote…
According to a recent announcement by MLB, the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka cannot be traded. However, the winning team can sign him and then trade him.
…my question, though, and i cannot get an answer to it, is this: if he is signed, then traded, can he demand a trade next off-season…
…as several readers were kind enough to point out in the comments section, the league’s new collective bargaining agreement has eliminated this clause for contracts signed in this off-season and beyond…
…thanks, guys…
At Tales of a Transplanted Mets Fan, Mike crunches a few numbers and determines that CitiField will have fewer bathrooms per male Mets fan then Shea Stadium has.
…this is not good…
…i could not believe the restroom-lines at shea during the playoffs…it was embarrassing…i walked the entire perimeter of the upper-deck, en route to meet a friend on the other side of the stadium, and never passed a restroom with less than 30 men in line…
At SI.com, Jon Heyman writes that Tom Glavine is ‘very likely’ to go back to the Mets.
On Friday, Tom Glavine declined his $7.5 million option.
Multiple reports suggest the Mets will eventually turn down Glavine’s $14 million option before the Nov. 20 deadline.
…this will by no means indicate that glavine will return to the braves…however, by officially entering the free-agent market he can finally get a true sense of what to expect from atlanta…at that point, he can accurately weigh his options…
…as i have mentioned before, the sense i am getting is that the longer this drags out the less likely he’ll return to queens…
