Readers,
Since much of baseball will be away over the next few days, due to Thanksgiving and the holiday weekend, I will be away, as well.
Of course, should any news break I will certainly be here to post and comment – so feel free to check in on occasion.
However, other than that, I intend to eat some turkey, see some family and enjoy a few quiet and uneventful days. I hope you will do the same.
Enjoy,

At his blog for the Baltimore Sun, Roch Kubatko reports that the Orioles and free-agent Roger Cedeno have agreed to a minor-league contract.
Cedeno has not played in the major leagues since 2005, when he hit .158 with eight RBI for the Cardinals.
…i am posting this so that i can tell the following story, again…
…in a broadcast for wpix a few years back, while cedeno was with the Mets, Keith Hernandez began giggling at cedeno for making a foolish error on a fly-ball in deep center field, adding, “he plays center like he’s being chased by a bee.”…
…this makes me laugh every time i think about it…
The Phillies and Marlins are among several teams pursuing Devil Rays OF Rocco Baldelli, while the Angels and White Sox have shown interest in Rays OF Carl Crawford, reports Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com.
…man, considering how expensive outfielders are these days, and considering how relatively inexpensive baldelli and crawford are, i suspect it will cost quite a bit of young talent to pry either of these guys away from tampa bay, who, subsequently, sat on Aubrey Huff, Danys Baez and Julio Lugo way, way too long, and have a track record of not making trades…
…also, as a mets fan, the thought of baldelli in a lineup with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard on the Phillies or Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez on the Marlins is downright worrisome…
According to SI.com, the Mets check in at 13 of 16 on a list of The Worst-Dressed Teams in Sports.
…the example given by sports illustrated is of Pedro Martinez wearing the team’s back road jersey and black hat, which will make this guy pretty happy…
The only commentary provided with the photo from SI reads, “Let’s face it: a paint-by-numbers fashion foul.”
…i have no idea what that means, either…
…as long as the team wins and comes across as entertaining they can run around in yellow polka-dots for all i care…
…i actually like the black hats and jerseys…oh well…of course, three-quarters of my wardrobe consists of white socks and t-shirts, so what i do know…
At a blog post for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jeff Schultz makes the case for why Atlanta should re-sign Tom Glavine.
…essentially, schultz is saying that glavine has nothing to worry about, as far as not getting a no-trade clause, since the writer is fairly confident the braves would never trade glavine…
…of course, i suspect glavine will want something a bit more iron clad than a beat writer’s hunch…
Schultz quotes Glavine’s agent, Gregg Clifton, as saying, “With his family here but his body there, it’s like he plays 162 road games.”
…nice spin…actually, it would be 153 road games, but who’s counting…
Schultz concludes by writing…
“There was a time I thought Glavine was playing this out just for the leverage. I don’t think that anymore. Four years ago it was about the money. Now it’s about everything but money. He is near retirement and 10 wins short of 300. The Mets won 97 games last season, the Braves 79. Signing Glavine changes the equation. Because now it makes sense.”
…honestly, while reading schultz’s post, i found myself less interested in what he was saying, and more interested in the ad for Waffle House, which appears next to his column…i miss waffle house’s pecan waffles…and the hash browns – scattered, smothered, covered and diced – are not so bad either…
If you’ve yet to do so, be sure and vote in this week’s MetsBlog Fan Confidence Rating by using the poll to the left…
…thanks…
In yesterday’s Newsday, David Lennon wrote that the Mets expect a final
decision from Tom Glavine in the days after Thanksgiving, but before the winter meetings, which begin December 4.
Last week, in his blog for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dave O’Brien suggested that a major sticking point between Glavine and the Braves may be his request for a no-trade clause.
Today, in the New York Post, Michael Morrisey quotes Braves GM John Schuerholz as essentially saying he has never granted a no-trade clause and, as a ‘general philosophy,’ he doesn’t intend to start granting them now.
…the concern here for tommy would be that come next july, if the braves stink, will schuerholz end up trading him to say, seattle, thus being super-far from his family, which was the opposite of why he may sign with atlanta in the first place…with the mets, he’ll be a met, and will certainly not be traded…
…also, the early buzz from atlanta suggests that the braves can only afford to offer glavine a one-year deal worth $7 million…meanwhile, speculation around new york has long been that glavine has a deal on the table from the mets worth at least $11 million for next season, with an option at a similar amount for the following season…
…if it comes down to security and more money, but being away from his family for a few months, compared to less security and less money, but being with his family for a few months, i would hope he’d choose more money, security and a really good cell phone plan…
At the Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam writes what many Mets fans are feeling these days, saying, “BMF wants players who WANT to be with the Mets. The longer you sit around and twiddle your thumbs the less I want you back. Make up your mind Glavine and do it quickly before this gets ugly.”
…honestly, i don’t understand this point of view, and i sense i am in the minority, as usual…
…first off, the team has made it crystal clear that glavine’s tap dancing is having no impact on how they navigate the free-agent and trade markets…whether or not the mets sign Barry Zito has little to do with glavine, who may impact a trade, but any trade that will get made will most likely happen during the winter meetings, which glavine has said he
will make a decision by…
…second, how do you know glavine does not want to be with the mets…
…maybe he wants to be with the mets, but also wants to be able to kiss his wife and see his kids off to school in the morning…
…it’s not all black and white, unfortunately…i mean, if it were a simple aspect of him choosing between the two teams i suspect he would choose the mets, for a variety of baseball reasons…but it’s more than that, and i for one respect him for this…
…so he’s taking an extra week or so to think about…so what…it’s a big deal for him and his family, i guess…it’s a lot of dollars and emotions that need to waded through…
…glavine has told several reporters, and the team, that he will make a decision by the winter meetings…as long as he sticks to that timeframe i am cool with how this has gone down so far…
At his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin posts a few batting averages to
show how Moises Alou will significantly help the Mets against left-handed pitching next season.
As Rubin points out, Alou had the second best average against lefties last season among NL outfielders with at least 75 plate appearances. Dodgers OF Andre Ethier finished first batting .351 to Alou’s .349.
Rubin also displays how Alou ranks alongside his new teammates.
According to David Lennon in Newsday, the A’s, Cubs and Orioles have had preliminary discussions with free-agent OF Cliff Floyd, whose days with the
Mets have most likely come to and with the signing of Moises Alou.
Floyd talks with Lennon about his time with the Mets, his ankle, working with Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph, and his concerns for the Mets going forward, which he notes, “They’re going to be good again – if they get some more pitching.”
…no kidding…
…you know, i rarely get wrapped up in cheering for specific players…i try to stay focused and realize the team is most important…but i’ll say this for cliff, i have a feeling i will continue to follow his career, and cheer for him, whether on the mets or not…
