postGame: Mets 8 Phillies 3

by Mike Nichols on June 30th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

The Mets (46-33) defeated the Phillies (41-40) by a score of 8 to 3 in Philadelphia this evening.

For a recap, and a boxscore, check out the Associated Press.

…great win today, but it came at a price, with the loss of Jorge Sosa to a strained hamstring…

…sosa was okay today, he kept the team in the game while he was in there, but seemed to missing off the plate with his slider more than he has been of late…we shouldn’t expect to see sosa for a while based on what we have seen with Endy Chavez‘s hamstring injury this year and Brian Bannister‘s last year, of course that all depends on the severity of the injury…Mike Pelfrey, get ready cause your it…

…scary moment in the first with Jose Reyes shoulder…held my breath there for a few moments, but reyes shook off what Willie Randolph called a “stinger,”and stayed in the in game…

…is Carlos Beltran on fire or what…launched two more home runs today…he just seems to locked in at the plate lately, even his outs are smashed…

…with each passing day this team’s offense seems to be clicking right now, with everyone contributing daily…

…give a game ball to the bullpen today, allowing two hits, a walk and four strikeouts through four innings, even Scott Schoeneweis looked good in his inning of work, keeping his road ERA at 0.00…still don’t understand the his success on the road…

…again nice win today gentlemen, let’s go for the kill tomorrow…

Opinion: What Would Pedro Do

by Matthew Cerrone on June 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

…last night, Cole Hamels clearly tried to hit Jose Reyes on purpose, after falling behind 3–0 in the count…to me, like Ron Darling pointed out, it was a matter of, ‘hey, you’re gonna walk anyways, so you may as well go to first with a bruise,’ after having rattled hamels’s cage a bit when on third base earlier in the game…also, hamels is a punk, so it all makes total sense…not too mention the kid’s harsh comments regarding Paul Lo Duca a few days earlier…

…then, after having both benches warned, John Maine gets plunked during an at-bat later in the game, and the umpire says nothing, which is what he should do, but, come on, if you’re gonna set a precedent by opening your mouth in the first place, blue, earlier in the night, then stick to it later in the night, as wellit’s such a stupid rule anyways, but if you’re gonna use it, then use it

so, today, if a player from the Mets get beaned and no action is taken, and by that i mean hitting a Phillie in return, i will be very disappointed…or, just hit the Phanatic, you know, because he is pure evil…seriously, tough, it’s not a matter of being a tough guy, or being macho, or bonding via fight, it’s a matter of who can throw inside and who can’t and who will own the inside part of the plate…and if teams start to think they can back the Mets up at no cost, it will hurt the Mets rotation and lineup in the long run…so, if this happens again today, i hope the Mets defend themselves and their right to crowd the plate…it’s that simple…

At Pick Me Up Some Mets, complete with video, Zoe recaps a classic Mets-dugout moment, during which David Wright and Carlos Beltran, among others, contributed to a stealth campaign to build a bubble-gum cup tower on the large head of Ramon Castro during last night’s game.

Minors: Caleb Stewart a Double-A All-Star

by Matthew Cerrone on June 30th, 2007 at 11:38 am

B’Mets OF Caleb Stewart has been selected to play in the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Game.

The 25–year-old outfielder is hitting .283 in 69 games with 12 HR, 10 doubles and 44 RBI for Double-A Binghamton.

To learn more about Stewart, check out Press & Sun Bulletin B’Mets reporter Brian Moritz, during his recent appearance on The MetsBlog Podcast, during which he said…

“He’s really come on in the last month or so…He’s just been a real consistent power hitter for the team.  he’s been the key to the offense.  Real good in the outfield, too.  Very smooth…He did kind of come out of nowhere…He’s just been a real solid to good every day player…

“I don’t know how he projects at the Triple-A level, let along the big-league level, I know he struggled a little bit at the start of June, but he’s kind of righted the ship a bit…but, certainly the numbers he is putting up are hard not to notice.  He’s got to be considered one of the rising guys in the system, I would think.”

postGame: Mets 5 Phillies 2

by Mike Nichols on June 29th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

The Mets (45-33) defeated the Phillies (41-39) by a score of 5 to 2 in Philadelphia this evening to sweep today’s doubleheader.

It was the Mets first doubleheader sweep in Philadelphia since June of 1980.

For a recap, and a boxscore, check out the Associated Press.

…terrific job by the Mets being patient against the unusually erratic
Cole Hamels tonight, by getting his pitch count up the Mets were able to get into the Phillies bullpen in the sixth…

…can anybody tell me why the home plate umpire decided to give a warning to both benches after the wild pitch that Shawn Green
for the games opening run…come on blue, it was clearly obvious hamels
was all over the plate at that point in the game…just ridiculous…

…despite the warning that didn’t stop John Maine from
sticking to his game plan…maine was excellent tonight as he just
pounded the strikezone with all his pitches…the only thing that hurt
maine tonight was the leadoff single to
Michael Bourne, who score on a sac fly from Chase Utley after a Paul Lo Duca errant throw on bourne’s stolen base…but no big deal, great job tonight johnny…

…speaking of bourne, two terrific catches tonight…one off the bat
of maine and another taking a extra base, run scoring hit from
Carlos Beltran in the sixth…

…speaking of beltran…even though the rest of the lineup was being
patient against hamels, beltran did the exact opposite…two of his
three at-bats against hamels, beltran swung at the first pitch and saw
of total of four pitches in those at-bats…that approach worked,
hitting two homeruns…

…i love Carlos Gomez‘s energy, but he’s still got quite a bit to learn..i’m sure after getting thrown out attempting to steal third in the top of the ninth, two on and two outs with lo duca at the plate and looking to tack on another run, Willie Randolph will put his arm around him in the clubhouse and have a chat with the young lad…

…even though he gave up an inherited-run off a single to utley and the walk to Ryan Howard is anyone else not worried about Billy Wagner when he comes in the game…hey Pat Burrell, exit light, enter night…

…well done today boys…keep putting the pressure on…

preGame: Mets at Phillies (Game 2)

by Matthew Cerrone on June 29th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

The Game:

The Mets (44–43) take on the Phillies (41–38) in the second game of a day-night double-header in Philadelphia starting at 7:35 pm EDT.

The Lineup:

Jose Reyes leads off, followed in order by Paul Lo Duca, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Carlos Delgado, Damion Easley, Shawn Green, Carlos Gomez and John Maine.

nice job, willie…go for the kill

…actually, counting the pitchers, how many players in tonight’s starting lineups will be in the all-star game…i’m thinking a lot

The Pitchers:

RHP John Maine (8–4, 2.87 ERA).  Maine has a 1.88 ERA in his last two outings, and is 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies.

LHP Cole Hamels (9–3, 3.80 ERA).  Hamels is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.

The Quote:

Hamels, after a game two weeks ago, when Lo Duca celebrated at home plate after hitting the last of back-to-back-to-back home runs off of him, as quoted by Scott Lauber in the News Journal from Delaware…

“You need to act like you’ve done it before.  He’s a veteran.  He should know better.  It’s the old sacred game thing.  There are little kids out there that are looking up to you.  They look at what happens.  That’s not the right way to do things.  It’s a situation where you know you’re going to face him for the next five, six, 10 years.  It’ll be more in his head than mine.  It’ll affect him more than me because I’ll have the ball in my hand, controlling what happens.”
