Opinion: Observations On The Home Run Derby
By Anthony De Rosa - Jul 10, 2007 10:02 am

…jeez, can they possibly suck the life out of what could be a pretty exciting exhibition…at the risk of sounding like a broken record that has been playing throughout the blogosphere, its too damn long…

…kenny mayne was the highlight of the evening…im a sucker for his deadpan delivery, and seeing him in a kayak with a helmet cam on only made me love him more…‘I met Ken Griffey Jr., which is cool’

ESPN has a list of great ideas for the derby, many of which were suggested by our own David Wrightyou know somethings wrong when the network who televises the event acknowledges that theres work to do…

…every year you can bet that the most unlikely candidate will factor into the tournament and Alex Rios didn’t disappoint…maybe its just my tv, but he looks 190 lbs soaking wet…its all in the wrists i suppose…

Vlad Guerrero was in an absolute zone in that second round, did he really hit a ball over 500 feet, that was outstanding…the whole thing with David Ortiz bringing out a special bat for vlad in a box was great…it would have been even better if papi actually participated, but his presence was fun to have at least…

Barry Bonds should be ashamed of himself for not participating, but then again he’s never ashamed of anything he does…

Matt Holliday is the best player in baseball nobody knows…baseball geeks like many of us consider him a household name, but if this guy was playing in new york, he would be a rock star…the crazy thing is, he wasn’t even originally supposed to be in the derby and was a late replacement for someone who dropped out…the best part is he had his brother throwing to him…

…i love the idea of making the final round like the original home run derby show from the late 50s…i actually used to catch old reruns on espn years ago, and they were fun to watch…how often do you get to see Rocky Colavito and Mickey Mantle tee off, while they watch and critique as the other bats…try getting these primadonnas to do a show like that these days…

…the greatest home runs of all time segment they ran before the derby was nice, they gave a nod to Lenny Dykstra’s home run in game three of the 86 NLCS…

…Counting Crows, pyrotechnics, and a song off the shreck soundtrack…can the marketing folks at mlb possibly be more out of touch…
