The Mets (60–47) defeated the Brewers (58–50) by the score of 8–5 in Milwaukee tonight.
For a recap and boxscore, check out Yahoo! Sports.
…i was worried…much like his last start, Oliver Perez looked good, made a throwing error and all hell broke loose…he got out of the first inning, but remained wild throughout much of the game…to his credit, though, the home-plate umpire had one of the smallest strike zones i have even seen, yet he struck out 11, so go figure, though most came on his slider out of the zone for what it’s worth…the zone was so tight, perez was shrugging his shoulders and rolling his eyes a lot, as was Willie Randolph, the Brewers, the fans, the announcers, you, me, all of us…ridiculous…put it this way, had Greg Maddux been pitching tonight, there would have been a homicide…nevertheless, perez was clearly rattled…the good news, though, is that he stayed out there and battled through it…it was a total implosion…
…of course, Shawn Green didn’t help, as he botched a play in right field, getting caught between a short hop and diving catch, and so the ball bounced over his head and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing a run to score…however, perez struck out Ryan Braun to limit the damage, which was a great sign…green made it up for it, though, as he hit a home run for the game’s last run…
…speaking of braun, did he make a deal with the devil…who is this guy…i hope this young third baseman has never heard of Gregg Jefferies…
…fortunately, the Mets used their bats tonight, most of which included Marlon Anderson, who started in center field tonight and had four RBI on the night, starting in place of a hot Lastings Milledge…i was confused by this move, as were most, since milledge had been playing so well…however, willie’s gut proved right in this case…i wonder if he’ll get credit for this move from his most passionate critics…
…Paul Lo Duca, who continues to be bothered by a sore hamstring, may be looking at a temporary platoon, because Ramon Castro, who hit another home run tonight, is looking too good at the plate of late to consistently ride the bench…
…lastly, it was good to see Guillermo Mota bounce back from the previous night to throw two scoreless, no-hit innings, while striking out two…man, i can’t believe willie brought him, what was he thinking…oh, sorry…by the way, i’m starting to take Billy Wagner for granted, which worries me, since, as a Mets fan, i’m conditioned to fear my closer…
…at any rate, nice win, guys…keep it going…

In an article for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, David O’Brien reports that the Atlanta Braves have designated Julio Franco for assignment to make room Octavio Dotel.
O’Brien writes:
“The Braves would like to retain Franco if he is not claimed on waivers by another team in 72 hours.”
“If he clears waivers, Franco could be offered an assignment in the Braves’ minor-league system and possibly brought back to Atlanta when rosters are expanded in September.”

While talking with WFAN a few moments ago, Willie Randolph announced that Triple-A RHP Brian Lawrence will start for the Mets tomorrow against the Brewers.
…the 31–year-old lawrence signed with the Mets several weeks ago, is 8–2 with a 3.87 ERA in 10 starts for triple-a, and is said to have an agreement with the team that if another club offers him a major-league deal he can walk at any time… he last pitched for New Orleans five days ago…
Lawrence missed the 2006 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.
In his last full season in the major leagues, Lawrence was 7–15 with 4.83 ERA in 33 starts for the Padres. He won 15 games in 2004, and 10 games in 2003.
Pedro Martinez will throw roughly 40 pitches in an intra-sqaud game tomorrow morning in Port St. Lucie.
He was scheduled to start tonight for Single-A St. Lucie, but the game was rained out.
Despite the rain out in St. Lucie, SNY will still air its extended pre-game show for tonight’s Mets game, complete with a live Q&A with Mets GM Omar Minaya.
In a report for SI.com, Jon Heyman notes that to get Chad Cordero from the Nationals, as part of a three-team deal involving the D’Backs, the Mets were being asked to send
RHP Aaron Heilman to Arizona.
…so, i’m thinking the deal must have been heilman to arizona, who was looking to swap an outfield bat for pitching, with Philip Humber and D’Backs OF Carlos Quentin going to d.c., all so cordero could come to the Mets…
…it’s a fair deal, i guess…except that, when at their bests, i would actually prefer heilman…plus, humber stays where he is…
…frankly, i’m tired of envisioning how other players could perform for the Mets, since no reliever is a guarantee…instead, how about heilman keeps up what he’s doing, and how about Pedro Feliciano returns to throwing strikes, and how about Joe Smith gets the rest he needs, because, in my opinion, those four, along with Billy Wagner, are more than fine…
Tonight’s game between the St. Lucie Mets and Brevard County Manatees has been cancelled due to rain.
Pedro Martinez had been scheduled to make his first minor-league rehab start for St. Lucie.
…as of right now, there is no word from st. lucie or the Mets as to what martinez’s next move will be…
…man, i’m glad i do not believe in omens…
…yesterday, we talked a lot about who it would be worth trading Mike Pelfrey, or Lastings Milledge, for…well, here he is…
According to the Star-Tribune, Twins LHP Johan Santana expressed displeasure with his team’s management and inactivity at the non-waiver trade
deadline.
The two-time Cy Young Award is a free agent at the end of next season.
…and i think it’s safe to assume he’ll blow the lid off the seven-year, $150 million contract given to Barry Zito…
Santana, among many other statements, as quoted by the Star-Tribune…
“I’m not surprised. That’s exactly how they are. That’s why we’re never going to go beyond where we’ve gone…It’s not just about hope. In a realistic world, you have to really make it happen and go for it…
“You always talk about future, future…But if you only worry about the future, then I guess a lot of us won’t be part of it…Because if you’re always talking about having young players – that’s the philosophy the team has, and I respect all that – but it’s been proven that it’s not enough to go all the way to the World Series.”
…let the dance begin…
Today, on The MetsBlog Podcast, Anthony and I will be talking with Tim Marchman from the New York Sun in a round-table discussion about what the Mets did, and didn’t do, during yesterday’s non-waiver trade deadline.
