At his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin has posted several congratulatory comments to Mets LHP Tom Glavine from around the sports world on his 300th career victory.
Head on over to Rubin’s blog for quotes from Bill Belichick, Steve Carlton, Bobby Cox, Wayne Gretzky, Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver and others.
Tagged Mike Nichols |The Mets have announced RHP Pedro Martinez will make his first rehab start on Wednesday.
…as cerrone mentioned earlier today on MetsBlog, pedro will either start for the st. lucie mets or the gulf coast team…
Tagged Mike Nichols |According to ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, the Top Three HR in Mets History are as follows…
1. Todd Pratt’s 10th-inning, walk-off home run against the D’Backs during Game 4 of the 1999 NLDS.
2. Ray Knight’s seventh-inning home run against the Red Sox during Game 7 of the 1986 World Series.
3. Mike Piazza’s home run against the Braves on September 18, 2001 – the first major-league baseball games after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.
…i wonder if Robin Ventura’s grand-slam single would have had a chance, had he been able to round the bases…of course, the Mets eventually lost that series, which always seems to alter the significance of the hit…
At Hot Foot, Sidd Finch is back with yet another edition of Sidd Speak, in which he tosses around random, but always relevant, statements about the Mets, such as…
“Steve Phillips may have won an NL pennant, but his legacy will always be ‘the guy who wrote the best known explanation of waiver wire trades’.”
…it really is a great explanation, which, if you have questions about waiver-wire deals, can be found here…i reference it every august…
OF Ben Johnson, who plays for the Mets Triple-A New Orleans
affiliate suffered a broken ankle while attempting to slide into second
base during last Thursday’s Zephyrs game.
Johnson is expected to undergo season-ending ankle surgery today in New
York and is expected to recover in time for Spring Training next season.
Johnson, who was batting .271 with 2 HR and 12 RBIs in 53 games with
the Zephyers this season, was acquired in a off-season trade last year,
along with RHP Jon Adkins from the Padres for LHP Royce Ring and RHP Heath Bell.
Given the historic week we have just had, John Delcos at his blog for the Journal News asks “if you could have seen any moment – that’s one play – in history live, what would you choose?”
Head over to Delcos’ blog to contribute your favorite moment.
…i was at the game last night and will be doing a recap of my weekend at wrigley soon, definitely the best moment i have ever seen live…piazza’s last game as a met was probably my second favorite live moment…as far as a moment i wish i was there for, i would have to go with “it gets through buckner”…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche |During last night’s game in New Oreleans, Mets RHP Philip Humber talked with the team’s radio host about his recent fight with food poisoning, during which he lost 10 pounds and needed intravenous fluids.
To listen to the interview, check out Adam Rubin’s blog for the Daily News.
Humber returned to the mound of August 1, following a none-day absence, and allowed one earned run on two hits while walking four over four innings.
Brad S sent in an e-mail asking…
“I don’t understand why you refuse
to bash Carlos Beltran at all on your Blog…The Mets should seriously consider trading him in the off season…I know you will sigh when you read that, because you are Mr. Met, and think that would be unacceptable, because you swear by every move Omar makes.”
…first of all, i have a fairly small hat size, so, trust me, i’m not Mr. Met, despite what you think…
…second, i hardly swear by every move made by omar, i’m just naturally positive and focus on winning, the big picture and the general direction of the overall team, which, as far as i’m concerned, is more than acceptable at this point…but, again, that’s just me…
…lastly, i do not bash beltran, probably because i do not bash anyone…the thing is, regarding beltran, i am not very passionate about him, probably because i do not have very high expectations for him, despite his contract and stature, which i have written about at length in past…as i have said in the past, dating as far back as to when he signed with the team, i feel his relationship with the fans has been, is, and will always be contentious, because he is a five-tool player who is better than average, but not great, at ever tool…so, for
a guy earning $119 million, he is never more than slightly above average at any one time, not too mention how injury prone he is, and all of that must seem wrong to people as it should…
…also, it’s the first week of august, and i am reluctant to bash anyone in the middle of the season…however, i’m formulating an opinion, from whether he is a fit for new york, as you mention, to whether he should continue to bat third, be on this team, what his game style is, his health condition, etc, all of which i am certain will get voiced in the off-season when personnel decisions are more relevant…
…because, ultimately, i may agree with you…something is not right with this player, be it when he’s hitting 41 HR, or on the disabled list…i like him, but, again, something is off, and needs to be evaluated in the off-season, no doubt…
In a weekend report for the Mercury News from San Francisco, Andrew Baggarly writes that, before the trade deadline, the Mets offered 21–year-old OF Carlos Gomez to the Giants for LHP Jonathan Sanchez.
Sanchez, 24, is 4–3 with a 4.54 ERA in 54 relief appearances, including 74 strike outs and 21 walks through 73 innings, during his first two big-league seasons.
…for what it’ worth, i sense there were a variety of potential deadline deals that were not reported on…i’ve heard of talks with the Giants, Marlins and a big-time trade with the Pirates, none of which materialized…
…at any rate, sanchez is a strong pitcher, and i believe the Mets have had interest in him during the past…he’s got a live fastball, lots of horizontal movement, which is complimented well by his change up…he also throws from a three-quarter arm angle, which is a favorite of rick peterson’s…like most young pitchers, though, he just can’t seem to find that third pitch, which is why he is still in the bullpen…
…speaking of gomez, check out this You Tube video of him and Lastings Milledge…good stuff…
As expected, the Mets altered their pitching rotation for the upcoming series against the Braves.
Originally, Oliver Perez was set to pitch Tuesday, followed by Brian Lawrence and Orlando Hernandez.
Now, though Perez will still pitch game one, Hernandez will pitch Wednesday with John Maine, who threw just 60 pitches in his last start, will pitch on Thursday.
…i lost count of how many e-mails i got from fans who were upset, angry, confused, etc, about the initial
rotation…clearly they were not alone…
Therefore, the following will be the scheduled pitching match-ups over the next three games…
Tuesday: Buddy Carlyle (6–3, 4.20 ERA) vs. Perez.
Wednesday: John Smoltz (10-6, 3.04) vs. Hernandez
Thursday: Tim Hudson (12-5, 2.95) vs. Maine
…i’m giddy…i’ve been waiting for this series since may…and judging by the new rotation, i’m not alone…
