Note: Pedro’s Rehab Start

by Mike Nichols on August 8th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Mets RHP Pedro Martinez pitched in his first rehab start since undergoing rotator cuff surgery last October tonight for the St. Lucie Mets.

Martinez threw 67 pitches over three innings allowing five runs on six
hits, including two home runs. Martinez also struck out five batters
while not allowing a walk.

…not great, but at least he is pitching in real games…as cerrone says, stay on target…

preGame: Mets vs. Braves (Game Two)

by D.J. Short on August 8th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

The Game:

The first-place Mets (63-49) continue their series with the division rival Braves (60-53) tonight, starting at 7:10 pm EDT.

The Lineup:

SS Jose Reyes leads off, followed in order by 2B Luis Castillo, 3B David Wright, 1B Carlos Delgado, LF Moises Alou, RF Shawn Green, C Paul Lo Duca, CF Lastings Milledge and starting pitcher Orlando Hernandez.

The Pitchers:

RHP Orlando Hernandez (7-4, 3.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets. El Duque took a no-decision vs. the Cubs in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits (including one home run) over 6.2 IP while striking out nine. Hernandez has won his last three decisions. The Mets have won the last five games in which El Duque has started, and are 7-1 in his last eight starts. In seven starts at home this season, El Duque is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA. Opponents are batting .198 against him this season. In his only start vs. the Braves this season on April 8th, Hernandez allowed only a solo home run over six innings as part of a no-decision.

RHP John Smoltz (10-6, 3.04 ERA) counters for the Braves. Smoltz struggled in his last start vs. the Rockies, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits over 6.2 IP while walking four and striking out five. It was his fourth start since returning from the DL due to right shoulder inflammation. He is 12 strikeouts away from tying Phil Neikro for first (2,192) in Braves franchise history. He is fifth in the NL with 16 quality starts. Smoltz is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts against the Mets this season.

The Notes:

RF Shawn Green is 13-for-26 (.500) with a homer and three RBI vs. Smoltz lifetime.

1B Carlos Delgado is 11-for-35 (.314) with four homers and 12 RBI vs. Smoltz.

LF Moises Alou is batting .150 in 20 at-bats vs. right-handers since returning from the DL.

1B Mark Teixeira is 1-for-11 over his last three games.

The Braves have scored 70 runs over their last eight games.

See: The Lucky Mets Fan

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

The fan who caught Barry Bonds’s 756th home run last night in San Francisco was a Mets fan, sporting a Jose Reyes jersey.

Here is a photo, from the San Francisco Gate, of the fan, Matt Murphy, who looks to be in total shock.

…as i noted earlier today, any time a fellow Mets fan hits the jackpot, i’m happy, since the ball will likely sell for roughly $500,000…ya gotta believe, buddy

Quote: David Wright is Capable

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

David Wright, on this current series, while talking to reporters after last night’s loss to the Braves…

“We’ve put ourself in a hole, there’s no doubt about it, but we’re very capable of going out there and winning these next two games…

“They’re a good team.  There is a reason that they’ve been beating up on us all year.  I mean, they play good baseball…So, if we wanna be the team we wanna be, and go deep in the playoffs, we’re gonna have to beat the best teams in the National League.”

…this situation with atlanta is is really getting ridiculous…and, for what it’s worth, i don’t buy that this current group of Mets, i.e. wright, Jose Reyes, etc, are oblivious to how the Braves have more or less smacked the Mets around in the past…i mean, Willie Randolph and the Mets are 20–26 against the Braves over the last two and a half years, so i think he and his players are somewhat aware of at least a modern version of the Tomahawk Chop, if not the entire relationship through the late 90s…so, i’m begging you guys, end this…please…it’s driving us crazy

Note: Scout on Beltran

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

In a recent column for the Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch quotes a scout as saying of Carlos Beltran

“You have to wonder what he’s thinking sometimes when he’s at the plate.  He looks totally lost for a guy who should be carrying that team.”

…i am getting the sense that a) not only will beltran remain on the disabled list tomorrow, when he is eligible to activated, but b) he will most likely be out through the weekend, as well

Opinion: Know Your Role

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

…it’s time lock in the lineup and bullpen…the Mets have had way too many people bat second, or eighth, etc, and way too much confusion out in the bullpen…i understand that much of this can be associated with injury, but that’s not an overriding excuse…

…from what i can gather, Billy Wagner has actually been quietly campaigning for more defined roles in the bullpen, because that sort of stability will allow each player to prepare properly and to be perfectly ready when the bell rings…i mean, who is his set-up man anyway…do you know…i don’t, and i’ve been watching this team all season…

…the lineup will function best, and consistently, regardless of who is hitting where, as soon every one knows who is doing what…when will reyes run…how many pitches will the guy batting second take…etc…all things that come with batting in the same place, day in and day out…

…i have talked to some experts who feel this idea of roles and assignments is overrated…frankly, for whatever reason, i think these people are just longing for the days when the game was not played this way…the thing is, like it or not, today, the game is played this way, and most baseball players, especially pitchers, have become total creatures of habit…

…this is not to say the team will fail if it continues as is…not all…it’s just, i can’t help but think that leaving every thing to a game time decision has lead to part of this team’s herky-jerky results all season and their inability to get in to, you know, ‘a nice little rhythm’…

…there are less than 50 games left in the season…please, pick a lineup, set up your bullpen, and stick with it…

News: Mets Sign 16-yr-old Free Agents

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

The Mets have signed international free agents 16–year-old OF Cesar David Puello Santana and 16-year old infielder Wilmer Alejandro Flores.

Both players will report to the Mets Instructional League in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Mets Director of International Operations, Ismael Cruz, on Flores, in a team press release…

“Flores is the biggest international signing this year and we are very excited at the opportunity to have him in our organization.  Many teams were bidding higher for him and he chose to come to the Mets ahead of the others for the opportunity to play in our organization.  Both signings are a result of a team effort from everybody in international scouting.”

Puello and Flores will take batting practice today at 4:00 p.m. at Shea Stadium.
