…i think this may be the best game i have watched all season…first off, it felt like a playoff game…second, the Mets won, and that’s always a great combination…but, most importantly, it was a super important game, not just because of the standings, but emotionally, with the way the team was reacting tonight, i sense they wanted to win it, knew they had to win it, and were thrilled and relieved that they did win it…
…Orlando Hernandez looked amazing through the first six innings…actually, i was thinking to myself, of all four pitchers for the Mets, i think it may be el duque who i want to have the ball in game one of in octob…uhh…oops…three runs for atlanta, and the Mets were losing in the blink of an eye…with runners on second and third, in the sixth, with two outs, and el duque down in the count, he and Paul Lo Duca did not seem to be on the same page, lo duca came to the mound, el duque settled down and then hung a sinker, which Chipper Jones pulled through the infield…on the next pitch, a hanging curve ball, Mark Teixeira drove in chipper, and within a few moments the entire vibe of the game changed…confidence and comfort flipped to paranoia and disappointment…
…in the seventh, the Mets got the bases loaded, Jose Reyes popped up for the second out, and Luis Castillo stepped to the plate…i cannot believe how antsy i was for a game in august…in fact, the crowd was wild, and nearly every player in the dugout was up on the railing, el queue was pacing around, willie looked like a nervous wreck and the bench was downright giddy…i haven’t seen them like this in a long while…it was quite refreshing actually…
…castillo hit a broken-bat blooper in to center, scoring Shawn Green and Lastings Milledge to tie up the game…castillo got to first and let out a huge, emotional fist-pump, clap and smile…and i hope he felt the New York crowd around him…
…in the eighth inning, Moises Alou ripped a huge home run in the left field to give the Mets the lead…he’s cool as cucumber, by the way…he turned on the pitch, jogged around the bases, gave a nice smile to his dugout, the place is screaming, the bench is rocking, and he’s just jogging like he’s out for a walk in central park…outstanding home run…
…hat’s off to Aaron Heilman, who pitched a scoreless eighth, after the Mets had tied it up…big, big stop…
…Billy Wagner freaked us out in the ninth, allowing the bases to get loaded, but he got Jeff Francoeur to ground in to a fielder’s choice, and got Andruw Jones to hit in to a game-ending double play…which Carlos Delgado completed by doing one of his most aggressive fist pumps off all time…
…gotta love reyes hugging castillo in celebration, as well…in fact, the team looked quite happy and releaved…and i assume this is how most of us feel as well…
