Opinion: How Are Mets Atop NL?

by Regis Courtemanche on August 10th, 2007 at 12:28 pm

…the mets have the best record in the national league once again, but am i the only one who is surprised by this…

…i feel like they are yet to hit that groove they seem to be capable of…their longest winning streak is four, and their longest losing streak is five…it has been a see-saw all year which has given other teams all but every chance to overtake them…so why haven’t they…

…well, it’s been a similar story for their two chief competitors, the braves and phillies, who have been equally as mediocre…all it would take is a decent winning streak for either of them to pass the mets at any time…i just fear that over the course of a long season, it will be all but impossible for this not to happen, which means the mets need to pick it up before they have to play catch up…

…their overall record isn’t that much different from last year, but they haven’t once been firing on all cylinders…when one part of the team is effective, the others are equally as ineffective… this yin yang effect can only come back to haunt them unless they decide to play to their potentional…ya gotta believe, but at some point i will begin to wonder whether their potential is as high as i thought it was…

Quote: Maine Will Be Fine

by Regis Courtemanche on August 10th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

In an article for the New York Post, Mike Puma writes about John Maine‘s recent struggles.

Puma writes:

“Maine (12-7) lasted 51/3 innings and allowed six earned runs on
seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. This followed a
Saturday performance in which he lasted 2 2/3 innings at Wrigley Field
and allowed six earned runs.”

“Over his past two starts, Maine has watched his ERA jump from 2.92 to
3.53, with control problems a central issue. Maine has walked six
batters in his past eight innings.”

Willie Randolph on Maine’s recent performance as quoted by Puma:

“He’ll be fine, he’s sometimes a little too hard on himself, but he’ll bounce back from this.”

…i don’t expect willie to say anything but this…i’ve been to maine’s last two starts and it seems like there has been some kind of tipping point for him…he will be cruising along and then out of nowhere it all falls apart…

…i do mirror willie’s comment though and feel that he will definitely bounce back eventually…

…big shout out and thank you to jason g. for the tickets to yesterday’s game by the way…

Opinion: Pedro Daydreaming

by Evan Drellich on August 10th, 2007 at 11:00 am

“Hola. Can Pedro Save the Mets?” was the headline of the march 7, 2005 issue of New York Magazine

…indeed, Pedro already did save the mets in the way author Chris Smith intended…he made the mets relevant again, his signing landmarked the renaissance that was the “New Mets”…

…now, it seems to be accepted and verbalized by everyone—from the fans, to the media, to the front office—that anything pedro gives the mets this season will be “extra”…

… he’s coming off major surgery, he’s getting up there in years…you can’t ask much of the guy…agreed…

…but the thought, the possibility of PEDRO…

…it leaves open the potential for him to upstage Roger Clemens’ supposed season-saving and absurdly over-publicized WWE-style comeback to the Yankees(“I saw Roger pitch the other day,” Martinez told reporters in May. “Without a doubt I can do that, and probably even better.”)…

…it leaves open the potential for pedro to put the Phillies and Braves’ seasons to bed

…it leaves open the potential for pedro to finish in october 2007 the storyline he started in december 2004…

…pedro could be a shell of himself…St. Lucie Mets hitters, maybe even your right-minded heads are telling you as much…

…but the possibility remains…

…the question might have changed from ‘can pedro make the mets relevant again?’ to ‘can he make them world champions again?’…

…but you can’t convince me that the answer is any different…

Health: Anderson’s Wrist

by Regis Courtemanche on August 10th, 2007 at 10:57 am

Mets OF Marlon Anderson left the game yesterday after diving for a ball he couldn’t come up with.

David Lennon at Newsday reports that Anderson sprained his left wrist, then left for an undisclosed period after learning about the death of his grandmother.

Anderson was on his way to Alabama and that he will be placed on the bereavement list today. An X-ray of Anderson’s wrist did not reveal a break.

The bereavement list allows teams to replace the roster spot for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven.
