…i miss dc…i lived there for two years, and enjoyed it a lot…
According to the Boston Herald, the Nationals have acquired outfielder Wily Mo Pena from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.
...Jim Bowden can’t let go of the Reds, man…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…well, it’s about time…i was starting to get sick of reading about bowden’s love-affair with wily mo…only four teams were ahead of the Nationals, so, their shot at getting him was good…
Mets GM Omar Minaya will be a guest on WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog at 4:30 pm this afternoon.
…going into the start of the season my expectations for this team
were very high, tempered, but high…i didn’t expect this team to run
away and hide like they did last season…you had to expect the Braves, even the Phillies, to be better than they were last season…plus, teams just don’t win divisions by 12 games every year…
…that being said this team cannot continue to play the type of
baseball they are playing and expect to be playing in october…the
complacency of this team is very bothersome…this is not something i
expected from this team, especially with the way they played last
season…if they are waiting for the Braves and/or Phillies to pass
them in the division to turn it on, they shouldn’t, and that “still in first” attitude is a dangerous mindset to have…
…i’m still very high on this team and i’m confident the Mets will win the national league east…where the team goes from there i’m not so sure, but, despite their recent play, this is a playoff team, no doubt…
…is the bullpen struggling, yeah, but as cerrone said earlier today on Metsblog, every team’s
bullpen goes through a rough patch…as i stated in last night’s
podcast, i believe one of the main issues with this bullpen is the lack
of undefined roles, which i believe helps each player mentally…that
being said i still do not see the bullpen or the starting pitching as
the problem, i believe both will be ok…the offense is what i worry
about the most…there are points when this offense looks terrific, but
the consistency just isn’t there…they continue to make unproductive
outs with runners on third and less than two outs and at times when
they can’t extend the lead as the team can’t string hits together to bring
home men on base…
…there is too much talent offensively on this team for them to
be struggling like this…i don’t think that means they should score
eight runs a game, but they do need to start being more consistent and
get back to that killer mentality they had last season, the one the Braves and Phillies
are playing with this season…there is still time for that to happen
and i believe it can happen and it’s time this team start playing like
my season has come…
According to Ken Rosenthal at
FOXSports.com, the Cubs and RHP Carlos Zambrano have agreed to a five-year, $91 million extension.
Zambrano is 14-9 with a 3.86 ERA this season.
He is 78-51 with a 3.37 ERA during his career.
…in some ways, this was inevitable…i had been intrigued by zambrano, but after watching him during the Mets recent trip to chicago i was a bit turned off, so i’m not totally disappointed…plus, i like when players re-sign with their home team…it’s good for the game, i think…
…lastly, this is just another example of how difficult it is to acquire starting pitcher, be it by trade or the open market, making home-grown talent all the more valuable…
…for those who would like to see Mets GM Omar Minaya make a trade through waivers in an effort to help out his team’s bullpen, note the following…
According to Jayson Stark, at ESPN.com, Dan Wheeler, Chad Qualls, David Riske, Kei Igawa and Matt Thornton have all been claimed on waivers and pulled back.
…in other words, they’re not being traded…
However, Steve Trachsel, Jose Contreras, Josh Towers and Odalis Perez have cleared waivers, and can be traded to any team at any time, according to Stark.
By the way, David Wells is a free agent.
At ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes that the Dodgers and Rockies were among the first two teams to express interest in the 44-year-old left-handed pitcher.
In 22 starts for the Padres this season, Wells was 5–8 with a 5.59 ERA. Opponents hit .322 against him.
…honestly, i would just as soon go with the bullpen the Mets already have…i have total faith in Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Heilman and Billy Wagner, and Jorge Sosa so far, when rested and healthy and performing up to the best of their abilities…the thing right now is that the entire pen, short of billy, is in a slump…it happens…every bullpen seems to go through this…the important thing is that it rights itself within the next week or so…
Willie Randolph, on neck-stepping, while talking to reporters after last night’s loss to the Pirates…
“Obviously, you have to stay focused and get over
that hump…It’s a matter of when you get your foot on their neck you have to press it down a little harder and finish it up. We had a chance to sweep (against the Pirates), and we didn’t get it done.”
Paul Lo Duca, on whether his team is missing the same fire it played with last season, while talking to WFAN on Tuesday…
“I think a lot of us, including myself at times, are sort of coasting – and thinking it’s just gonna happen because we have such a good ballclub, and it didn’t. We fell in a really, really bad rut, not to mention we had a really tough schedule and we got our brains beat it. We got beat 14 out of 18 at one time…
“Yeah, I think guys sort of coasted a little bit, and this isn’t a game where you can just turn it on and turn it off. We’re not like Barry Sanders, and guys like that, who can just turn it on and off when they want to. This is baseball. It’s a little bit different. It’s hard to just turn it on. There’s only a few people in the history of the game who could do that. That’s what I think is what happened.”
…you know what paulie, the more i think about it, i think i’m coasting too, as a fan…i’ll be honest, despite your team’s struggles, and lackadaisical play, i still feel 100 percent confident you’ll be in the playoffs, almost to the extent that i’m taking it for granted, and that’s not good…and after reading your quote, i realize i might not be alone…
…i don’t know, man, i mean, i panic any time the Phillies or Braves pull within three games of first, but than you win, they lose, order is restored and i feel silly for ever worrying in the first place…but, at some point, you guys might not skirt disaster, as you’ve done over and over and over again all season…it’s actually starting to feel like a high-wire act, or like you guys are just trying to run out the clock…i mean, at some point, though, you may slip, you’ll lose and they’ll win…and then, at that point, i am not sure how you or i will react…or, worse, if we’ll react at all…
Prior to last night’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Carlos Delgado’s knee continues to be a bit stiff.
…from what i can gather, though, he was able to hit last night, and will most likely play tonight in DC…
…meanwhile, i sense that Ramon Castro is ready to play and eager to do so, but the Mets are a bit gun-shy…
…lastly, the word from the team is that Lastings Milledge has been a bit sluggish the last day or so…he’s got a sore throat, an upset stomach and the cold sweats, though he did not have a fever…
…i’ll admit, any time i hear that a player has ‘flu-like symptoms’ i instantly think ‘hangover,’ but, for what it’s worth, i don’t think that is what this is at all…
In the Bergen Record, Steve Popper explains how Pedro Martinez, while watching the Mets on TV, noticed a flaw in Jorge Sosa’s delivery and phoned in advice to help out his teammate.

that hump…It’s a matter of when you get your foot on their neck you have to press it down a little harder and finish it up. We had a chance to sweep (against the Pirates), and we didn’t get it done.”
