postGame: Mets 8 Nationals 2

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

The Mets (70–53) defeated the Nationals (55–69) by the score of 8 to 2 in DC
this afternoon, completing a three-game sweep.

For a recap and boxscore, read Yahoo! Sports.

…i’ll admit it, i pushed for Luis Castillo and
Ruben Gotay to split
time…however, it’s clear that castillo was the right acquisition, and the
necessary starter…he’s so consistent, so smooth…he plays excellent defense, he
hits well from both sides of the plate, and what’s more, he picks up the slack
nearly every time
Jose Reyes does not lead-off by
getting on base…luis steps right in, as he did twice today, both times resulting
in runs scored…he gets on,
David Wright gets him over,
castillo scores on a single or sacrifice…snap, crackle and pop…

…nice defense by Shawn Green at first…i’m
impressed…

…give a game ball to Orlando Hernandez…he
allowed the
Nationals to take a 2–1 lead early in the game, and then
proceeded to buckle down…he could have come apart, pitching a lot with runners
on base…instead, he kept the game together, pushing his way, in a tie game,
through the seventh…in fact, tied up in the seventh, with runners on second and
third, willie left el duque in, as he should have, and orlando muscled
through…getting out of the game…the
Mets bats broke out the next
inning…game over…i mean, when the going gets tough, el duque gets
going…

…huge hit by green, who broke open the game with a seeing-eye single,
after having
Carlos Beltran intentionally walked to
load the bases…

…actually, the Mets got a few important seeing-eye singles on
the day…

…lastly, beltran is locked in, hitting two more home runs today…man, he’s
so streaky…get it while it’s hot…

…nice sweep…i feel like a fool for having worried as much as i did a few
days ago…

preGame: Mets at Nationals (Game Three)

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

The Mets (69–53) take on the Nationals (55–68) this afternoon in DC for the final game of a three-game series.

…so, here we are again…the Mets are in position to sweep a sub-par team…will they be able to ‘step on their necks,’ as willie and wright like to say…

…come on, gentlemen, finish the job at hand

The Lineup

Jose Reyes leads off, followed by Luis Castillo, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Shawn Green at first, Lastings Milledge in right, Marlon Anderson in left, Sandy Alomar Jr., and Orlando Hernandez.

The Pitchers

Orlando Hernandez (7-4, 3.12 ERA) starts for the Mets.  The Mets have won El Duque’s last seven starts, during which he is 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA.  In two starts against the Nationals this season, Hernandez is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA.

Shawn Hill (3-3, 2.41 ERA) will start for the Nationals. Hill is making his second start since being activated from the DL.  In his last start he allowed one hit and struck out a career-high seven batters through six shutout innings against the Phillies.  Hill defeated the Mets in April, allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings.

The Notes

The Mets are 19-5 in RFK Stadium since the Nationals relocated in 2005.

The Mets have won five of their last six games, scoring a total of 45 runs during the stretch.

Health: Damion Easley and his Ankle

by Matthew Cerrone on August 19th, 2007 at 10:23 am

Last night in the sixth inning, Damion Easley was removed from the game after injuring his ankle while running from first to second.

According to the team, X-ray’s on Easley’s ankle revealed a potential Grade 3 sprain, including ligament damage.

Easley has returned to New York for an MRI and additional testing.

…if i had to bet, i’d say so long to easley for this season…seriously…just ask Cliff Floyd…

Opinion: Fragile, Handle With Care

by Regis Courtemanche on August 19th, 2007 at 9:44 am

…someone must have a voodoo doll for each of the mets players…this is getting to be too much…

…loduca, castro, beltran, endy, gomez, marlon, valentin, delgado, alou, and now easley…even willie found himself in a sling this year…the list goes on…

…the mets have not been firing on all cylinders this year because their cylinders continue to break…the replacements have done a decent job for them, but once scouting reports on them are updated, their luck runs out…no team can expect to be successful over the long term with the “b” team…

…trust me, i believe…i’ve been believing for over two decades as inferior teams to the mets happen to get hot right before the playoffs and go on to become champions…if the mets don’t get healthy, and get healthy soon, they will definitely not be one of these teams…

…wright and reyes can only carry this team so far, but eventually, as the zephyrs continue to get called up to queens, even those two will feel the burden and the mets will not be “still in first place”…

…so, with that being said, rest up boys because you still have time to keep your motto from becoming “our season has come…and gone”…
