Tonight, in his third minor-league rehab assignment, Pedro Martinez faced 20 batters allowing two un-earned runs on two hits, while walking just one and striking out four, through five innings of work.
Appearing on SNY’s Daily News Live, Mets GM Omar Minaya said that Damion Easley will be out for at least one month, most likely more.
Easley suffered a Grade-3 ankle sprain on Sunday.
The Mets will acquire 1B Jeff Conine from the Reds for Single-A OF Sean Henry and SS Jose Castro.
Castro, 20, was hitting .318 in 308 at-bats for St. Lucie, with 12 doubles, one triple, two HR and 25 RBI in 77 games.
In 450 at-bats for St. Lucie, the 22–year-old Henry hit .298 triples, 11 HR, 57 RBI and 18 stolen bases.
…it’s about time…the Mets had been linked to the Reds and conine all through the trade deadline and the last few weeks…in fact, i’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner…he will make for a nice, veteran, playoff-tested, right-handed bat off the bench, which this team is certainly in need of…
MiLB.com will be broadcasting Pedro Martinez‘s start tonight as the St. Lucie Mets take on the Brevard County Manatees.

the season this week and posted three consecutive multi-RBI games.
This marks the second time this season that Carlos has
been named a weekly award winner, having also won for the period of
April 16-22.

Tagged Regis Courtemanche |At his blog for ESPN.com, Buster Olney explains why the Twins may look to trade Johan Santana during the
coming off-season, as he can be a free-agent after 2008.
Olney writes…
“An educated guess now is that Santana would wind up with the Mets, who might back up their prospect truck to get the left-hander.”
In a recent chat for ESPN.com, Olney writes that to get Santana, a team can expect to trade three Grade-A prospects, as well as a major-league player.
…so, what are we talking about here, Mike Pelfrey, Fernando Martinez, Philip Humber and Lastings Milledge…damn…it’s almost hard to believe…at the same time, though, we’re talking Johan freakin Santana, so i guess i understand the request…
David M sent in an e-mail asking…
“Do you have any idea what the timetable is for Joe Smith’s return.”
…david, at this point, i believe he’ll rejoin the team after rosters expand in September…as such, a corresponding roster move will not need to be made…
In six appearances for Triple-A New Orleans since being demoted in early August, Smith has a 2.57 ERA, having struck out four batters in seven innings while giving up five hits and walking four.
He has not allowed a run in his last three appearances, spanning 4.2 innings pitched.
From opening day through June 11, Scott Schoeneweis had a 7.06 ERA, while averaging roughly one walk, one hit and no strike outs per inning.
Since June 11, Schoeneweis has a 2.95 ERA, while averaging one strike out, no walks and no hits per inning.
…however, his stark home-and-away trend continues…
Schoeneweis has a 2.53 ERA on the road since June 11, but a 6.17 ERA while at Shea Stadium.
Meanwhile, at 15 appearances at Shea Stadium, Guillermo Mota has a 3.72 ERA, including 17 strike outs in 19 innings, yet has a 7.89 ERA while pitching in 20 appearances on the road, where opponents are batting .309 against him.
Willie Randolph, talking to reporters after yesterday’s win…
“It was just a nice job of team baseball today, picking everybody up…I’ve said it many times, how proud I am of this team. We go through our ups and downs like every one else, but I’m proud to be a part of a group of guys that get after it every day and comes prepared to play.”
…i was worried after that hideous loss to the Pirates…now i feel silly for ever doing so…
…i mean, the Mets went 5–1 on the road trip, against two below-average teams, they’re in first place by five games, which, by the way, is the biggest lead of any
team in baseball, Pedro Martinez and Endy Chavez are coming back, the bats look good and they’re coming home for six games…
…i’m not going to slip in to a false sense of security mind you, i mean, this team has flaws and the Braves and Phillies are still on the map, no doubt, but, it’s time to start giving these guys some credit for averting disaster after disaster with injury after injury to remain in first place following many a day when they could have easily slipped from the high wire and didn’t…
…i tend to panic and worry and complain, but, seriously, is there any other team in the league i would rather be right now…no, there isn’t…ya gotta believe…
