postGame : Mets 2 Phillies 4

by Anthony De Rosa on August 28th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

The Mets (73–58) lost to the Phillies (69–62) by the score of 4 to 2 in Philadelphia tonight.

For a recap and boxscore, go to Yahoo! Sports.

…ugh…i cannot believe mota was in there pitching to howard…it was like deja vu…i distinctly remember the same situation and the same outcome…tough to take after a very good outing by tommy…

…speaking of tommy, he pitched seven scoreless innings and looked like vintage glavine tonight…he was getting the corners, as joe west was a lot kinder to mets pitching than last night’s umpire…carlos was not happy with country joe, who fined him $100 for dropping his bat, after calling him out on a close pitch…willie was able to calm down carlos before he got himself thrown from the game, but it was nice to see some fire out of the usually reserved beltran…

…beltran got hit by a pitch in the ribs and needed a minute or two to catch his breath before going to first, he stayed in the game but west warned eaton, which the sny booth though was a little bit of an overreaction…

…one bright spot of the night was delgado hitting a two run homer, which was the total offense for the mets…he nearly missed a second homer, when it died at the warning track…keep it up carlos, heating up at the right time…

…the wheels fell off in the eight…feliciano came in and promptly gave up a homer to rollins…lo duca was expecting a dribbler up the line to go foul but it was not to be…the ball stayed fair and the inning was extended and allowed the phillies to tie the game…

…the mets couldn’t get anything going against myers, and while mota looked good in the ninth, i had to question bringing him back for the tenth, and the rest is history…

…bounce back tomorrow, and win the next two…the phillies cannot afford a split here…get the job done gentlemen…

Note: Who Will Start on Saturday

by Matthew Cerrone on August 28th, 2007 at 9:26 am

During last night’s loss to the Phillies, Mets RHP Brian Lawrence threw 88 pitches in 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking one.

Willie Randolph, on Lawrence, talking to reporters after last night’s loss to the Phillies…

“He’s done a nice job for us for the most part.  You know, he’s not going to trick you or do anything different.  What you see is what you get.”

He is 1–2 with a 6.31 ERA in five starts for the Mets.

Following the game, Randolph told reporters that, ‘at this point,’ Lawrence will start on Saturday against the Braves.

…at this point…gotcha

Last night in Triple-A New Orleans, RHP Philip Humber did not allow an earned run through five innings.

…the word from n’ola is that humber had been pulled from the game after being hit with a line drive…he had thrown roughly 60 pitches up until that point

Meanwhile, prior to last night’s game, Mets GM Omar Minaya said Triple-A RHP Mike Pelfrey could be a candidate for Saturday’s start.

Pelfrey missed his last start in New Orleans due to fatigue.

…i would think that Joe Smith and pelfrey are locks to be called up when rosters expand on September 1…from what i had gathered, though, humber is not

Quote: The Mets Were Sort of Flat

by Matthew Cerrone on August 28th, 2007 at 9:06 am

The Mets lost to the Phillies last night in the first of four games this week in Philadelphia, pulling the Phillies to within five games of the Mets for first place in NL East.

the Mets were back to playing lackadaisical last night, after a solid week of having their foot on the gas…i guess this will happen from time to time, it’s just hard to believe it occurred in the first game of what could be a huge serious for the Mets…

Paul Lo Duca, talking to reporters after the game…

“It’s just one of those games where we were sort of flat the whole game…It’s one of those games we need to forget about and come back out (Tuesday) and play well.”

…i’ve been sent a few e-mails from readers who seem to think Willie Randolph should do more to keep this from happening to his players…as though he has some magic button he can press that motivates his players…

…these are experienced major-league men we’re talking about…at this point in their careers, if they don’t realize this is a big game, and they’re not up for it, no manager, no motivational speaker, not even Vince Lombardi is gonna get them to wake up, and cover second, and hit the cut off, and run the bases better, and hit a curve ball, etc…yes, it’s inexcusable, but it’s equally unexplainable…

…more importantly, though, is that the team responds tonight with focus and fire…that’s what matters now…
