After today’s game, the Mets announced that Carlos Delgado will miss at least a week with a strained right hip flexor.
…from what i can gather, there is no plan to promote a player like Mike Carp or Brett Harper, given how well Shawn Green has looked while filling in at first base…
SNY will host a stickball game on the SNY studio plaza tomorrow, September 6, at noon, featuring teams coached by Mets GM Omar Minaya and SNY’s Ron Darling.
Minaya and Darling will hold a live Q&A after the game.
Over the Mets Minor League Report, Toby Hyde recaps yesterday’s Mets minor-league action…
Among other comments, Hyde writes of strong performances by LHP Jon Neise, who allowed no runs while striking out nine through six innings in a win for Single-A St. Lucie.
…toby provides a mets minor league report after each night’s action…thanks, toby…
The 20–year-old Niese is 11–7 with a 4.29 ERA, while striking out 110 batters in 134 innings, and walking just 31, through 27 starts for Single-A St. Lucie.
As Hyde points out, Niese has allowed three earned runs in a start only once in his last ten appearances.
He is 6–4 in 14 starts with a 3.52 since the All-Star break.
By the way, Niese was born on the exact day the Mets won the World Series in 1986.
…get to know his name…you’re gonna hear a lot about this kid in the coming year…

…John Maine just didn’t have it today, it’s that simple, which is very disappointing coming off his last start against the Braves…he let up a two-run home run to Brandon Phillips, and it was more or less over after that…to maine’s credit, he buzzed phillips a few innings later, with an open base and two outs…
…in the fourth inning, Luis Castillo led off with a bunt, and advanced to second on a bad throw…David Wright then walked…but, both runners were stranded…in the inning, with runners on first and second and no outs, Carlos Beltran tried to lay down a bunt…amazing…it’s like 2004 all over again…so strange…
…i have a feeling the team’s offense was either napping on the bench, getting an MRI, or on mentally on a plane heading home for the weekend…
…i mean, it felt like a spring training game today…
…Philip Humber looked quite average, at best…i know he is good, but today he looked weak…or, he looked weak in his first inning of work…his ball was sailing all over the place, he had no bite on his curve balls, and even his outs were hit hard…however, he looked much, much better in the next inning…so, maybe it was just nerves…
…Willie Collazo looked better…it’s strange, he’s like a second Pedro Feliciano, but instead of the slider it’s a soft change-up, which is quite deceptive because he is very, very consistent in his delivery…
…so, enjoy the off-day, gentlemen…you’re clearly looking forward to it…
Prior to today’s game, Orlando Hernandez threw a successful bullpen session, experiencing no pain.
El Duque told reporters that he will throw a anoter bullpen session this weekend, get a second cortisone shot, and hopefully start next week against either the Braves of Phillies.
The Game:
The
first-place Mets (78-60) look for a second straight sweep as they take on the Reds (62-77)
this afternoon at Great American Ballpark, starting at 12:35 pm EDT.
The Lineup:
LF Endy
Chavez leads off, followed in order by 2B Luis Castillo, 3B David
Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Jeff Conine, SS Ruben Gotay, RF Lastings
Milledge, C Mike DiFelice and starting pitcher John Maine.
The Pitchers:
RHP
John Maine (14-8, 3.57 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets. Maine came up
big in his last start vs. the Braves, allowing just a single run on
three hits over seven innings while striking out eight. It was the
first time he had went seven innings since July 24th vs. the Pirates.
In 13 road starts this season, Maine is 9-2 with a 3.24 ERA. He was
roughed up for seven runs, four earned, over 4.2 IP in his only start
against the Reds this season on July 13th.
RHP
Tom Shearn (1-0, 4.76 ERA) starts for the Reds. The 30-year old rookie
has made two starts since his call-up from Triple-A Louisville,
allowing six earned runs on 11 hits (including two home runs) over 11.1
IP along with four walks and five strikeouts. Shearn made his major

this season, Shearn was 7-10 with a 4.20 ERA.
The Notes:
The
Mets have won a season-high five consecutive games. At 18 games over
.500, they have matched their high-water mark of the season.
Paul Lo Duca’s seven RBI last night were the most by a Met since Jose Valentin drove in seven on July 8, 2006 vs. the Marlins.
Brandon Phillips has a homer and a double in three career at-bats vs. Maine.
Endy Chavez is 2-for-16 since coming off the the DL.
Of
Carlos Beltran’s 27 home runs, 11 have either tied a game or given the
Mets a lead. 21 of his home runs have come on the road.

…enjoy…and as always, let’s go mets…
The Mets have told reporters that Carlos Delgado has been sent to New York to have an MRI on his right hip.
…from what i can gather, it’s likely to reveal a strained hip flexor, which is not that big of a deal…if it’s a grade one, he should be back by the weekend…fingers crossed…
According to Peter Gammons, in a report for ESPN.com, Peter Gammons, Pedro Martinez will next start on Sunday at Shea Stadium against Houston and then on September 15 at Shea against the Phillies, both of which are day games at home, which is by design.
Martinez’s first start at night,
notes Gammons, will be September 21 at Florida.
In the Bergen Record, Steve Popper brings us up to speed on the day after Martinez’s first start.
…i hope to go to the game on sunday…i miss the electricity that pedro brings to the stadium, and i look forward to feeling how fans receive him, which i assume will be nothing short of amazing…
Martinez, as quoted by Popper…
“I think being at home with the fans is going to be a little bit emotional, especially the way the fans are with me. They’re crazy with me. I’m crazy with them. So, it’s probably going to be a mutual feeling. I’m already in with the team, so it’s probably going to be more like a normal outing than anything else.”
Mets OF Carlos Gomez was 0-4 with a sacrifice fly and two strikeouts last night during his fifth minor-league rehab game with Single-A St. Lucie.
In five games, Gomez is batting .154 with no extra base hits and four strike outs in 13 at-bats.
…last season was a cake walk…this season, the team has had to work…a lot…hell, so have we, the fans, for that matter…i think this is why we’ve been so on edge all year…
…i mean, when you think about it, as Mets fans, we are not raised on back-to-back years of success…think about it…typically, we get it, enjoy it, and then it is ripped from us and we’re stuck with Art Howe before we can blink…so, now, right now, i sense so many of us are quietly fearing that out of no place the shoe will drop, or that the baseball gods are going to rip the fun away from us, like usual…
…the thing is, that’s all nonsense…so, enjoy the drama and remember it’s supposed to be fun…
Tom Glavine, during a recent interview with WFAN,
when asked if losing four in a row to the Phillies could actually help the team in the long run…
“If you look for one thing good about going in to Philadelphia and getting swept the way we did, 1) I do think it was a dose of humble pie for us, and 2) it put us in a position where, as a team, we had to battle…
“I mean, other than the post-season last year we’ve never had to go through a pennant race, we’ve never had to go through situations where the season is in the balance…we didn’t have to deal with that last year. I think those things bring out your character, they bring out your resiliency, and I think as a team it made us realize that day in and day out we have to come to the ballpark and play the game and play it the right way. When we do that, we’re a very successful team. But, we can’t afford to take any nights off. And, I think, going forward, the rest of the year, that’s gonna be a good thing for us…
“If we continue to play well and hold on the division I have no doubt in my mind that will serve us well going in to the post-season.”
