With last night’s win over the Reds, the Mets have won five straight games for the first time all season.
Randolph, on whether he is surprised this is the first five-game winning streak of the season, while talking to reporters…
“Yeah, it is surprising. I though earlier in the year we have a streak like that, when we played pretty consistent early in the season. I don’t know how to look at that. Is it consistent or inconsistent? I don’t know…
“Everyone kind of goes through there little runs and with the year we’ve had, 18 over .500 I believe, to not have a five-game winning streak it means that we’ve been pretty consistent just winning series and playing the game…Now is a great time to get hot…
“This is the perfect opportunity to maybe reel off eight or nine in a row, it’s be nice.”
…yes, it would be nice…to say the least…
…of course, the Cardinals went 4–8 over their last 12 games last season, and then won a World Series, so who the hell knows…
Last night, for the first time in six seasons, Paul Lo Duca hit two three-run home runs, while knocking in seven runs.
Lo Duca currently has seven home runs on the season. He has not hit more than seven in a season since 2004.
Lo Duca, on the team’s recent play, while talking to reporters after last night’s win…
“I’m just really proud of everyone in here, especially after what happened in Philadelphia, to come back and play the way we’ve played the last five days…This is huge…
“Tomorrow is another big game. We’ve got to keep pushing, because the Phillies aren’t gonna stop…We’ve got to keep winning.”
…sounds like a plan, paulie…
…i do not like to look forward to the off-season, while in pennant race during early September, but, i hope the Mets bring lo duca back, who continues to tell people he wants to re-sign, despite his rough stats and bizarre relationship with the media…i could care less that he’s hitting .269…he can still hit…he’s been pressing a bit this season…i just don’t think it’d be wise to ship out his leadership…plus, most fans love him…
Shawn Green started a third straight game in right field for the Mets last night. He had a single, a double, a run scored, one RBI and he did not strike out.
Green has a four-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .333 with six RBI and zero strike outs.
…from what i can gather, green has been starting of late mostly due to favorable pitching match-ups coupled with being in a hitter’s park…it continues to sound like it will be a total mix-and-match situation out there, with green, Lastings Milledge and
Endy Chavez playing musical chairs…
…also, he continues to look pretty slick at first base…i’m actually quite impressed with how well he handles himself over there…good to know…
Willie Randolph, on Green, while talking to reporters after last night’s win…
“Yeah, he’s swinging the bat and getting his hits. You know, I told Shawn and all of my outfielders they they’re gonna be in the mix, and to stay ready and keep working hard – and that’s what they’ve done. So, a lot of it could be because they’re staying fresh and staying strong – you know, there’s something to be said for that when you’ve played a long season and you’re in the dog days.”
Green, as quoted by the Daily News in the newspaper’s post-game report…
“I’ve come to accept the fact I’m not going to hit 40 home runs anymore…I feel like I slipped into a different type of production. It’s more a swing guy who can play right field, first base. It’s a different role. However I can contribute is going to feel good. I’ve accepted the fact I’m not one of the guys in the middle of the lineup that needs to carry the team anymore. Here we’ve got plenty of those guys. My goal each day is to find a way to help the team win.”
Prior to yesterday’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that Orlando Hernandez will likely re-join the team’s rotation next week against the Braves or Phillies.
To make room for Pedro Martinez on the 40–man roster, the Mets switched Ben Johnson to the 60-day DL.
Also, prior to last night’s game, Sandy Alomar Jr. was promoted from Double-A to join the Mets for last night’s game.
Lastly, Jose Valentin has been put on the 60-day DL.
