Blog: Wright Will Be NL MVP

by Mike Nichols on September 6th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Rob Neyer, in his most recent blog entry for ESPN.com, debates the MVP candidates for the American League, but does pass along a note on a National League MVP candidate. Neyer writes…

“P.S. By all measures I can find — both numbers and media buzz — if the Mets finish in first place, David Wright is a lock in the National League. Book it.”

…great to hear…as said before, wright has been tremendous and
although he does not have those sexy power numbers like most former
mvps, his will and determination to carry his team to the playoffs is
deserving of mvp consideration…

Stat: Milledge vs. Green

by Regis Courtemanche on September 6th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Since August 15th, Lastings Milledge has had 41 at bats. In that time he is batting .220 with five walks, three runs scored, four RBI, and 16 strikeouts.

In 42 at bats since August 15th, Shawn Green is batting .310 with five walks, 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, and only seven strikeouts.

…it seems to me that whenever green
feels milledge nipping at his heels, he picks up the pace…although
the right field situation has been cloudy this year, it has been nice
to see
Endy Chavez get into the mix as a defensive replacement late in games now that he is healthy again…

Vote: Lo Duca Clemente

by Matthew Cerrone on September 6th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

For the first time, fans can participate selecting who wins the Roberto Clemente Award, which Mets C Paul Lo Duca has been nominated for.

To vote, go to MLB.com.

The Award aims to honor the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.

i’m beginning to lose count of all these awards…

…funny, in that, as a fan, i’m only concerned with the award pictured in this post

eMailbag: Why the Switch

by Matthew Cerrone on September 6th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

Larry from LI sent in the following e-mail…

“Why do you need to change the site?”

BlogHarbor, who hosts MetsBlog, by providing a great platform through which all design, comments and content are created, is switching servers…the servers are where every image and every word are stored…BlogHarbor is not the server, another company is…when the page loads slowly, or your comment appears five times in a row, that’s the server causing me and BlogHarbor a headache…BlogHarbor is too good for that…so, they’re moving on to greener pastrures and will soon start working with a much better, much more reliable server company…since i love BlogHarbor, i will be switching with them…

…i could have gone it alone, and signed up directly with my own server, but, frankly, so much of MetsBlog’s success can be attributed to BlogHarbor’s support and customer service, that i am moving with them and am super excited about…

…by the way, BlogHarbor is expanding to offer WordPress style blogs…to learn more, go to PressHarbor…if you have an original BlogHarbor blog, or use Blogger, or another service, check out PressHarbor, because WordPress is an amazing platform…i am still learning, but i am beyond impressed so far…

Read: We Are the Team in First Place

by Matthew Cerrone on September 6th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

At the website for Sports Illustrated, John Donovan asks…

“Are the Mets, with the best record in the league and a five-game lead in the East, really the best the senior circuit has to offer?  And if they are, what does that say about the NL?”

Jose Reyes, as quoted by Donovan…

“We can play better than this.  We can play better, no doubt about it.  Sometimes it’s tough.  [But] a lot of teams want to be in the same place we are.  Everyone’s chasing us.  We are the team in first place.”

…i know i tend to get defensive when the Mets are put in the cross-hairs, probably because i am a Mets fan…but, who cares whether they could be better…seriously…first place is first place…baseball is super complicated…and the post-season is a crap shoot…it never ever goes according to plan…

Meanwhile, at his blog for Newsday, the always insightful Ken Davidoff explores why there is so much parity in baseball, noting how the Mets are on pace to win the division with just 91 wins, writing…

“This is all the byproduct of revenue sharing and the luxury tax.  It’s a good thing.  But it’s funny to espouse notions like, ‘The Yankees and Mets have to pick up the pace here.’ Because it looks like both are doing just fine.”

exactlyit’s not like you get extra post-season points for every game you win your division by…

…yes, i believe the Mets are capable of winning more games than they will…but, then again, maybe they aren’t…who knows…i mean, find me the perfect team in baseball right now…then again, maybe the Mets aren’t capable of playing any better than they have…i’d like to think they can…but they certainly have flaws, injuries, etc, and it’s not like they’re playing junior varsity teams with no interest in winning and losing themselves…

…what i do know is that with 25 games left in the year, the Mets have a five game lead…and that’s good enough for me…you know what else is good enough for me, a one game lead on October 4…whatever, just get me to the playoffs
