Note: Castro Hits in Single-A
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 10, 2007 10:49 am

Mets C Ramon Castro was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored for the Brooklyn Cyclones this weekend.

Castro has suffered from an arthritic lower back since August.

…from what i can gather, castro is okay…the question is, will the back flair up tomorrow, or the next day, etc…the Mets do not trust it…so, he needs to keep playing in minor-league games, so the team can evaluate how his back will respond…at that point, the team will decide whether he should re-join them

…you know, while i’d miss castro’s bat off the bench in October, and given how well the overall bench is hitting at this point right now, i think i’d actually rather Sandy Alomar Jr. on the post-season roster for his defense

Yeah… now that Lo Duca’s hitting better (and the Mets are winning)… Castro just doesn’t seem as important… especially since he can’t seem to throw out runners anymore and Lo Duca can.

is this really the sentiment now? people are forgetting all the people clamoring for castro to replace lo duca, now he isnt really necessary. unreal.

The fact of the matter is, the Mets probably won’t fail to win the WS because of a backup catcher. (Kiss of death, of course.)

  3. nymets27 says:

i doubt that Lo Duca will miss even an inning of baseball come playoff time. he might level the clubhouse if Willie takes him out of a game.

  4. upstatemet says:

See how he does in a week or so down there. We can use him cause he can flat out hit but I would take alomar to the post season roster over Def any day

    • pcmetsfan07 says:

Is there anyway Willie and Omar are leaning towards taking Castro as a hitter and carrying DiFelice or Alomar?

That could be interesting…but of course that would be leave a guy like Gotay off the roster

      • The Stache says:

I don’t think you can leave off Gotay since he is the only backup middle infielder on the team. The only way that could be accomplished would be to move Castillo to SS in a pinch and have marlon anderson play 2b. Castro isn’t a good enough hitter to make that situation worth it. Plus Willie has already shown us that even with 3 catchers he will not pinch hit Castro routinely.

No offense, but that’s a terrible idea.

I’ll never forget how Kurt Abbott and his bad back couldn’t get that grounder by Sosa in the WS. Abbott was the backup to Bordick who probably would have caught that. Ordonez almost definitely catches that. So if I’m Willie or Omar, I don’t want Castro on the postseason roster unless his back is 100% with very little risk of the ailment recurring any time soon. Otherwise go with Alomar or Difelice.

I think you mean sojo…not sosa….i agree much rather have alomar jr. defense….cuz paulie wont sit…AND i dont want sele wasting a post seasonroster spot

I mean, I like Castro, and I think he’s a great addition off the bench, the problem is it’s not going to happen anyway as Willie’s not going to use his only reserve catcher. With the added days off in the playoff rounds to redo the schedule Lo Duca will inevitably play every day anyway.

Although everyone always says Castro’s the best guy in the clubhouse, so maybe that plays a small part too.

  7. fishmanj says:

I would prefer having Castro just for the chemistry ingredient.

  8. jamie says:

Gotta have a backup catcher, regardless of how much Paulito _wants_ to play.

  9. SheaVendor says:

Hey, if Castro can help Brooklyn win the NYP League Championship, I’m in favor of leaving him there for a couple of weeks.

  10. upperdeck says:

Until Castro takes his physical condition more seriously and loses some weight, we can all forget about him being a full time catcher. Arthritis at his age? C’mon, if he loses that weight, the “arthritis” goes away.

    • jamie says:

Not if it’s really arthritis, it doesn’t (as opposed to “arthritis”, whatever that implies…that the team’s lying about his back?)
