Opinion: Putting The Hammer Down
By Anthony De Rosa - Sep 10, 2007 1:08 pm

…we’ve been saying it all year, that the Mets need to do a better job at putting the hammer down…they’ve begun to do that more the last couple of weeks, but this week is a big test to see if they can completely put their two biggest rivals in the division away completely…

…sweeping the Braves in Atlanta was huge, not only in the standings but on a mental level since it has been a house of horrors for so many years…we can’t change all those years of dominance overnight, but another series win against the Braves will be a major statement…

…as for the Phillies, there is unfinished business there as well, and the Mets have been vocal about their desire to enact ‘pay back’ for the sweep they endured in Philadelphia

…the team seems to be hitting their stride as of late, and they need to continue to do so…the cliches about momentum, and it only being as good as ‘your next day’s starter,’ all seem trite…but its true more often than not…

John Maine and Oliver Perez look more beatable than they did earlier in the season and at any point last year, so it’s important for them to get their traction back in these next few weeks – as one of them could be auditioning for a spot in a post season rotation…

…so, these are two big series, if not for the sake of the standings, but for the psyche of the team…to show that the Mets can put the hammer down…

…it’s time to take no prisoners, and to take care of business…

I want to know who picked up John Milner in the 1st place!

I think they’re gonna be fine in these two series. What I’m equally interested in is how they handle the last 12 vs the also-rans (can’t put STL in that catagory yet). Will there be a drop of intensity, since they’re not playing the Big Boys, or will they chew em up and spit em out (as they should)? I think 8-4 is a nice, round expectation.

They should be fine, but the probability of a let down probably is inversely proportianal to the size of the lead!

So, if they scuffle a bit agains P&A, then expect them to take it our the bottom feeders to put the division away.

But, if they wipe out the Phils 9the braves frankly are hardly a factor), they may coast a bit.

keep in mind that the Phils have a ton of games against the same patsies, so it is not inconceivable that they could reel off quite a few wins.

For this reason, pushing the lead to 7-8 would be real nice. A 4 game lead could require the mets to actually win a lot of games.

Sure, they can and should, but it would be nice not to have to. Plus, it will require working the key guys harder (as opposed to getting them some rest).

I’ve been killin the team all season for being soft. Couldn’t even enjoy the Turner Field Turnaround, after what had happened in Philly. Hopefully this next week will, put away the doubts I’ve had about the makeup of this team.

They’re almost at full strength, time to get all the pistons firing.
