Read: Mulvey is Solid

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 11:05 am

In his recent Ten Pack of Prospects for Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein details Mets RHP Kevin Mulvey, writing…

“Mulvey had a good-not-great year in Double-A this season…While Mulvey’s bread and butter is command and control, he’s not working solely with finesse stuff, as his average fastball and solid slider are both power pitches. He projects as solid middle-to-back rotation starter who should eat up plenty of innings, and that could start as early as mid-2008.”

In 26 starts for Double-A Binghamton this season, Mulvey had a 3.32 ERA, having walked 43 batters, while striking out 110, in 151 innings pitched.

In his final start of the season, in a playoff game for Triple-A New Orleans, he allowed two unearned runs on six innings while walking nobody through six innings.

Read: Postseason Rotation

by Regis Courtemanche on September 11th, 2007 at 10:56 am

In an article for Newsday, Ken Davidoff discusses Oliver Perez‘s chances of being in the Mets’ hypothetical postseason starting rotation over John Maine, whom it seems by most accounts he is competing with.

Davidoff writes:

“So whom do you want in Game 4? Perez or Maine? So crucial in the first half, both have been up and down in the second half. But whereas Perez’s problems seem obvious – again, the arm slot – it might not be as easy for Maine, who is 4-5 with a 5.86 ERA since the All-Star break. “

Bob Klapisch at The Bergen Record writes:

“Who gets squeezed out of the rotation next month — Oliver Perez or John Maine?”

“Most likely Maine because of his inconsistency in the second half. His post-All-Star break ERA is more than three runs higher than it was in the first half, and the league’s average against him has risen by 52 points. The mystery of Maine’s collapse is that he’s still capable of winning big games – he devastated the Braves in the first game of the sweep at Turner Field two weekends ago – but hasn’t kept the liveliness in his fastball.”

“Meanwhile, Perez made a strong case for himself, outdueling Tim Hudson in a 3-2 victory Monday night.”

…the superstitious side of me doesn’t like all this postseason talk but it’s inevitable, and worth discussing…

…before the season, the starting pitching was the biggest question mark for this team…now their is an issue about the rotation because each pitcher has stepped it up…this is a good problem to have…

Blog: What Pedro Provides

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 10:56 am

At his blog for SNY, Ted Berg explains the impact of Pedro Martinez, while quoting David Wright, Sandy Alomar Jr. and others.

Wright, as quoted by Berg…

“The moment he walks in the door, he’s got an aura about him…He just finds a way to liven up the clubhouse.  And after that tough Philadelphia series, we needed that shot of life that he brings.”

Mets are 9–1 since Martinez re-joined the team.

eMailbag: Italian Song at Shea

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 10:43 am

Spitty sent in the following e-mail, asking…

“What is the name of the seventh-inning stretch, Italian song that they play at Shea Stadium (that follows Take Me Out to the Ballgame)?”

Lazy Mary by Lou Monte

it is one of my favorite moments during a game

…also, every time the second verse starts, and prima says, ‘second stanza,’ i have to say, ‘Tony Danza,’ just like my grandfather used to do…

News: Glavine in 2008

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 10:25 am

According to Kevin Kernan in the New York Post, “Tom Glavine wants to come back for a 22nd major-league season.”

Glavine, among many other statements, as quoted by Kernan…

“I have to wait and see, but as far as going out there and having fun and doing the things I have to do to be successful, there’s been nothing there that makes me think I am going to walk away…

“Surprisingly, my kids are more on the side of me playing next year than not. I think that is in large part because they understand what I am doing. They enjoy coming to the ballpark and being around the guys. They like the game of baseball.”

Since July 24, spanning his last nine starts, Glavine is 5–0 with a 2.72 ERA, during which opponents are hitting .265 against him.

…he’s been great, and so consistent…

…look, i’m all for bringing him back…the thing is, how many starting pitchers will this team have next season…

…honestly, i can’t even think about this right now…

…so much will happen between now and the hot stove season, for us, for the team and for glavine, that this almost does not even seem worth discussing

Health: Castro Hitless in Rehab

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 9:13 am

Mets C Ramon Castro served as designated hitter and was hitless in two at-bats while continuing his minor-league rehab with the Single-A Cyclones last night.

Castro has suffered from an arthritic lower back since August.

…as i wrote yesterday, from what i can gather, castro is okay…the question is, will his back act up tomorrow, or the next day, etc…the Mets do not trust it…so, he needs to keep playing in minor-league games, so the team can evaluate how the arthritis will respond…at that point, the team will decide whether he should re-join them

By the way, with last night’s win over the Staten Island Yankees, the Brooklyn Cyclones clinched a berth in the New York-Penn League Championship Series.

Note: Mets to Honor City Agencies

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 8:54 am

In honor of today’s sixth anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Mets will wear hats honoring the eight city agencies of New York.

Additionally, each hat will be individually signed and later auctioned online at Mets.com, with all proceeds benefiting families of area police, fire, civic and emergency officials who died in the terrorist attacks.

Yesterday, according to the Daily News, David Wright and Howard Johnson visited with firehouse Engine 24/Ladder 5, located on the corner of Houston St. and Sixth Ave.

In Newsday, Shawn Powell relives the impact the Mets and Braves had on the city, when playing a baseball game for the first time in New York after the attacks on Sept. 21, 2001.

Braves RHP John Smoltz, as quoted by Powell…

“We get carried away and lose perspective sometimes…All of us: players, fans, everybody.  Well, we’re all in this together.  That game was a nice reality check.”

Quote: Big, Big Play

by Matthew Cerrone on September 11th, 2007 at 8:34 am

Last night, with Tim Hudson on second base, who was taking a sizeable lead towards third, 2B Luis Castillo crept close to the bag, slipped in, LHP Oliver Perez turned from the rubber, tossed the ball quickly to Castillo, who pegged Hudson sliding back in to the bag.

it was beautifully timed, and essentially killed a potential rally for the Braves in an inning that was shaping up to be a problem…well done

Willie Randolph, on the play, while talking to reporters after the game…

“We were screaming and yelling to Luis to keep him close.  I mean, it was a good play by Luis and good reaction by Oliver, but we were conscious of the fact that he had a big lead and getting ready to go.  Actually, one time I thought he was gonna go…Jerry Manuel kept saying he didn’t think he would go, but it was a good play by Luis and the timing was perfect on it.  Big, big play.”

…for those who do not know me, i get crazy dizzy spells from time to time…i’ve never really known why…anyway, if you’re a kid, who is a right-handed pitcher with dizzy spells, wow, that pick-off move to second can be one wild-ass ridebelieve me
