The Game:
The first-place Mets (82-61) continue their series with the Braves (73-71) this evening at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm EDT.
The Lineup:
- SS Jose Reyes
- 2B Luis Castillo
- 3B David Wright
- CF Carlos Beltran
- LF Moises Alou
- 1B Jeff Conine
- C Paul Lo Duca
- RF Lastings Milledge
- SP Orlando Hernandez
The Pitchers:
RHP Orlando Hernandez (9-4, 3.32 ERA) returns to the mound for the Mets. El Duque was skipped in the rotation last week due to a sore right foot. His last start was against the Phillies on August 30th, allowing five runs on six hits (including three home runs) over just three innings. In two starts vs. the Braves this season, El Duque is 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA.
RHP Buddy Carlyle (8-6, 5.21 ERA) starts for the Braves. He was knocked around in his last start vs. the Phillies, yielding three runs on four hits over just 1.2 IP. Carlyle has allowed at least three earned runs in six consecutive starts. He has allowed 18 HR in 96.2 IP this season. Lefties are hitting .341 vs. him this season. Carlyle won his only career start vs. the Mets on August 7th, allowing three runs over five innings.
The Notes:
The Mets are 9-1 since being swept by the Phillies.
LF Moises Alou carries a 15-game hiting streak into tonight’s game. It is the second longest hitting streak of his career.
3B David Wright is leading the NL with a .356 batting average since the All-Star break. He established a new career-high with his 28th homer of the season last night.
The Braves are 16-23 in one-run games this season. They have lost five games in the NL East standings since August 30th.

…enjoy…and as always, let’s go mets…

J Franco staring in OF! :-)
Francoeur, Jones, Harris – right to left, nobody older then El Duque starting tonight.
yahoo had Franco in there before… changed now
where’s Green if lefties are hitting 341???
in willie’s gut
thanks funny
conine over green?
everybody wanted to release green a few weeks ago. now, he is untouchable in the line-up. comical. think conine can get a few ab’s or do we have to wait for a lefty with these long-time vets
conine can get some ABs tonight plus we all know green will be starting tomorrow since smoltz cant get him out to save his life.
reyes and castillo are a more talented version of the wild boys (nails and bachman). love it!
Conine needs some AB’s
9 out of 10, 21 games over .500, best in the nl and a 6 game lead over philly you are telling me green over conine will make a difference. Conine needs AB’s to stay fresh so when we need a pinch hit in the playoffs he’s not rusty.
So, only one run by the Braves after loading the bases with none out. Orlando is looking shaky out there. Let’s hope he settles down.
didnt the mets have 1st and 3rd after reyes and castillo got on.
how didnt they score a run?
Wright grounded out, Reyes was out at 3rd. Beltran struck out. Alou flew out.
El Duque is doing a John Maine impression. Walking just about everyone, giving up a home run after a walk. Take him out already, he clearly sucks tonight.
why would you even think about taking el duque out this early in the game? who do you want to put in? sele? humber? el duque is our ace. hes comin off an injury’ and hes a little rusty..give the guy a break. he has been our best pitcher all season and now you want to take him out after 3 innings because hes struggling a bit? go cheer for some other team because no one here wants your negative comments when the team is playing this great
Not tonight. Cant dissapear from the rotation for weeks and then just come back all guns.
Time for el Duque to keep pitching the rest of the way. He’ s not hitting any of his spots. Enough damn rest. These “injuries” he claims to have are never serious. Its the Mets brass’ way of saying el Duque wants a vacation.
el duque is old..give him a break…as long as hes ready and at the top of his game for the playoffs he can take as many “injury” breaks as he wants. i have no problem with him taking a few breaks every now and then if he is going to dominate for the most part when he isnt “injured”. would you rather have him be tired and pitch like he did last outing at philly? or take 10 days off and come back refreshed
well…David Wright grounded out to the pitcher. Beltran struck out and Alou flew out. Very productive inning.
Also, take into consideration that Buddy Carlyle shuts down the Mets every time he pitches..the guy is an ACE!
Not looking too promising so far. I am actually more worried about a stiff like Buddy shutting them down than if it was SMoltz!
I am kind of worried that these nagging injuries are going to continue to impact Hernandez, and that he might go MIA again in the playoffs.
Duque and Henrandez’s injuries concerns are actually a good reason to keep a plefrey over Mota. If they don’t, they might get caught short, although Maine and Sosa should both be able to throw for a while, or make a spot start.
Now get some runs, because I don’t think you can depend on the Rockies to help out.
Note to Mets: Buddy Carlyle is on the mound, not Walter Johnson. For Christ sake his name is more for a pet than a grown man.
Surely we will start to light Carlyle up the second….err…third time through the lineup right?
Perhaps they’re setting up for a dramatic late innings comeback given the occassion?
Somebody get the Mets the memo that Buddy Carlyle is actually a stiff, his ERA is 5+, and everyone else scores lots of runs against him lately.
This is smelling like a shutout! Just based on their recent track record against the crap pitchers in the league.
If the Mets made it to the playoffs against a team of such pitching giants as Buddy C. Adam Eaton, Drubin, etc., they would probably get swept!
Now facing the top 4 in the Cy young race? Mets would romp!
But, plenty of game left to get the pedal to the metal. Too early to start coasting and taking games off, not with the Phils coming up.
These walks aren’t helping here…
why is everyone being so negative? whenever one game doesnt go your way everyone starts bitching and moaning. we cant win every single game..if we could there would be no point in playing out the rest of the season. how about you look on the positive side…..reyes starting things off with a nice double….id say thats pretty positive…not to mention that great throw by beltran and el duque getting out of that jam with only one run
The reason some posters wanted El Duque out early was what he is doing in th e4th. Like in Philly, if he clearly doesn’t have it, pull the plug while the game is close. Or, wait 1 inning until the Braves are up 7-0 instead of 3-0.
If he can’t locate and is struggling, what good does it do to leave him out there giving up runs? You have Humber all reasted, let him pitch for a while.
I’m a glass half full kinda guy but isn’t all this postseason talk getting out of hand? Can’t we wait til after the Philly series?
Yes it is, and yes it should.
They could have a 1 game lead or an 11 game lead after the Phils leave (or something in between of course), so I think it is prudent to wait a bit before counting the old chickens.
Ick….ok, Let’s Go Rockies!
OK, now it is getting silly. After the hit by the pitcher, and the game about to be blown open and ut out of reach, how long does Willie let him go? He shouldn’t have still been in there, and there sure better be someone up already.
Or do they feel so secure with the lead they can sacrifice a game to get Duque some work?
i think this is the shortest outing by a mets starter all year.
3+ innings.
Perez had 7 walks in 2 1/3 earlier this spring, I believe…
this is very concerning. back to back bad starts from el duque jeesh. if hes bad on his next start then there’s a problem though
We’ll get ‘em tomorrow. It’s a bit unreasonable to expect them to win every game. Win this series, win next series. All I ask for.
and seles in there because…………..
…This game is pretty much out of hand. Who do you want out there instead? Heilman? Then we can blame willie for over using him during the post game tomorrow night.
I sense a pattern.
Willie is too dumb to get Humber some work?
Yup, Willie sticks with his standard “better to take him out too late than too early” plan for the SPs. It seems like he is more concerned with getting them through 5 to be eleigible for a W than just winning the game in the first place!
This is concerning that he has sucked 2 straight games. Last one was because he was hurt. The worry is, is tonight just from rust and the weather, or is he still hurt? Wouldn’t really surprise me if he ends up back on the shelf.
Of course, if he needs more down time, do they dare put him on the roster if they make the postseason? Does he have to pitch at least one strong, healthy game 1st?
Also will be interesting to see if the Mets check out now, figuring they have the “big lead”, or will them come clawing and scratching back for runs?
I’m guessing the former, but we shall see!
Also, as much as I want to see the Mets come back to win, if they aren’t going to, I wouldn’t mind seeing Sele roughed up. I don’t want him anywhere near a PS roster, and if he pitches OK down the stretch, they might keep him. Not use him of course, but still keep him.
and before I even finished typing and could post this, he flushes away the potitive inning he was having!
This game you can probably put in the books. Now, just root for the Rockies! And it is a must win tomorrow.
Aaron “White Flag” Sele is pitching and has actually managed to get 2 outs without giving up a run.
because he is our long man and this is a long man situation. have confidence in your teams players. he will probably stay in as long as thing game is still within distance (even if it is a pretty far distance) and then maybe we will see other pitchers such as humber and callozo
not anymore, why can’t humber get some work?
Keith just said “do you think Burrell wants to take back his comment from earlier this afternoon?” What did Burrell say????
Hopefully, “I dare them to throw at my head!”
he basically said that the phillies have given up on the division and want to concentrate on the wild card instead
Burrell said something along the lines of the Phillies giving up the NL East race and play for the wild card from now on.
ok now it is far out of reach so hopefully we will get to see humber get some work
Wow. Are these posts even serious?!?! 9-1 over the last 10 and you guys get all worked up over this?!?! In case all of you forgot teams sometimes lose.
I don;t think it is unreasonable to be concerned about Duque.
Figuring its 230am here, hope they get some runs this half inning or it’s turn out the lights time for me
hey does anyone remember the last series when we swept the braves that at the end of one of the games one of the braves players pushed or stepped on delgado for no reason at all on the very last play of the game? i think now could be a good time for some retaliation on the player who did that to delgado
um? pray for rain
I have no problem with Sele getting bombed tonight because it just furthers the case for how bad he is. He needs to be cut before October. Frankly, I can’t believe he’s made it this far. The guy is absolutely dreadful. There are guys in my office that can pitch more effectively.
Let him get roughed up….to show everyone how bad he is.
Enjoy the next 2 weeks Sele.
Snip snip.
guess i’m staying up!
Haha, some of you guys get mad easily.
Calm down guys, everything is going to be alright.
ANd for some reason, I can see the Mets coming back to win this…
alright lo duca…hes been hittin the ball really well lately since returnin from the dl
i wish you posters had 1/4 the fight of this team. Go mets!! Make them earn every single win!!!!!!!!!!!
Trying not to get too excited here.
Still, nice to see Lo Duca hitting like this in September.
Hey Benny, it’s 245am here, hence the reason I thought I might call it a night
im just throwing this out there but if I were a team that was facing the Mets in the postseason(granted they get there) I would call up a bunch of journeymen or rookies to start against them rather than going with the Aces of the staff…it is a trend of the Mets doing very well vs top of the line well known pitchers as opposed to nobodys.. just a thought
Actually I wasn’t talking about you, haha.
I was ready to change the channel but my laziness left on the channel.
Its just the other that over-react.
And besides even if they lose, big deal?
I cant believe people are actually agree about this game, whatever man oh geez 9-2 in our last 11 IF we lose, ill be honest im not worried right now 6 runs in 5 innings? not impossible
im not worried about the mets, im worried about el duque
Well said Krusty!
well obviously i unfortunately missed the first 3 1/2 innings which was enough to miss el duque, did he just completely s*** the bed and should we be expecting maybe a 2 week vacation before the playoffs start if we make it that is.
This is a big test for Pelfrey. If he’s going anywhere near October, it will be in the bullpen. He needs to show that he can handle that.
Grikke,
If you havn’t been able to assess Pelfrey’s whole body of work this year…then you are either drinking the Mets KoolAid or have a learning disability.
Mike Pelfrey is a bust. Hot air. All hype. This is notorious of both NY clubs overhyping pitching prospects to make their chip more valuable. I know we are all hesitant to deal pitchers because of the Kazmir incident…but Pelfrey will never be a good pitcher. His stuff is blah, his location is aweful, and his moxy on the mound is garbage.
Please Omar…lets cut our losses, ship Pelfrey off for a descen bullpen arm or something. He’s simply not that good.
As I type this….he is throwing up all over the place.
SIMPLY NOT A MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER. Wake up Mets fans.
and what about that great outing against the braves last series? obviously he has the potential to be a pretty good pitcher….lets not be so anxious to throw away talent because it is struggling in the beginning
Lol….good outting. Not great.
And it was ONE OUTTING! Even Juandy Rodriguez has good outtings at some point. Your looking at ONE OUTTING?!? How bout the other 10 that SUCKED!
This is not the beginning anymore. He’s had more than ample opportunity to prove himself. He has failed.
Please spare me with this Pelfrey sugarcoat fest. The guy is not that good. I don’t have time to watch him get bombed for another 2 years before he becomes a “quality” pitcher.
That’s true. He’s what, 23? 24? Just cut the guy. I’m sure no other team is even willing to pick him up off the scrap heap and give him a flyer.
Yes, this is sarcasm BTW.
If you have to point out that your statement is sarcasm….your not doing a good job writing it.
Keep it going Rox, I can feel comfortable saying that knowing Kaz is hurt
5-0 rockies
Rock `em! Sock `em! ROCKIES!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE somebody tell me why, when I see Beltran at the plate, why Im not at all surprised when he strikes out with men on base? I know he is a great hitter ..yadda..yadda..yadda.., But why is that? I am more surprised when he gets a hit , I think he a a GREAT glove to have behind you , but, as a clutch hitter I would say NO WAY!!
get yourself some video of the 2005 playoffs when beltran broke most of the offensive records. then the 2006 series against when he won game 1 vs the cards and game 4 when he belted 2 hrs.
that’s clutch. more so than anyone on the mets roster.
*2004 playoffs
That was then, this is now.
Phils are phaltering. Phinished off this weekend at Shea!
Why was Carlyle taken out of the game? He only threw 80 pitches.
because cox doesnt trust him
looks like reyes is back-3 doubles
Well, at least Reyes woke up.
Once again, Willie’s “take him out too late than too early” isn’t working. Bring in Mota. Use him up in a blow out so we don’t have to use someone better.
Nasty game. But, at least they got to trot out some of the guys “auditioning” for the pen. I think thought that only Pelfrey really had a shot. Maybe not anymore?
Sele just can’t be on any PS roster. No way.
Pelf, I was hoping, but may not be room. Collazo at least got his cup of coffee.
Now rebound tomorrow please, and take the series!
Collazo can still be useful.
True, but unless he pitches better than this, they will just keep the “known quantity” Schoenweis, since they are paying him the big $$, and he is a veteran.
Um, nice to see ALou hit a dinger, but why exactly is he still in this game, with what must still be a wet OF? This should be Endy time by now, or even Newhan (isn’t he up again?)
Gotta protect the old men when you can!
Wow, we even have a Humber sighting!
Frankly, if El DUque is still hurt, there may not have been 1 guy pitching tonight that will even be on the PS roster (if, of course, there is one).
OK, write this one off. In the war of attrition, the Mets actually won. One less game on the schedule, and the Magic number is reduced.
The Mets don’t really have to win another game, as long as the Phils (and Braves) don’t win too many more!
Just look to shake it out of their systems, and come back tomorrow and pound on Smoltz.
OFF TOPIC:
does anybody know where i can watch highlights of the following games
mets vs braves where the mets had the 10 run 8th inning capped off by piazzas homer
mets vs braves nlcs 1999 games 5 and 6
the 1st game after 9/11
Mets playoff tie breaker vs cincy in 1999
Agbayanis homer vs the giants
pratts walk off homer off mantai
anybosy know, thanks
For some reason I still watched this game and thought we might come back and win it :}
As “Beltran and the Mets” said, teams lose sometimes. It happens. Sorry to break this news to you.
ur kidding right?? They just showed you the passed 10 games why they are the team to beat in the NL this year. You will not win every game, you have to learn to accept that. They have been on fire of late and it was not gonna last forever. I do agree however that it is a little frustrating that they can be so good then have games like this and like the finale in cincy where they were shutout. BUt all in all as a fan jsut be happy where we are, we are 6 games up and the phils are losing as i post this. Stop sweatin and start believin.
wow ready to give up after a “loss” HEY its only the 4th inning even if they do lose the phillies are losing and were still going to make it to the playoffs. so shut up and stop being COOKUUU
