Does anyone else wonder what Roger McDowell must be like as a coach? It makes me think of making the worst kid in the class the monitor. I remember him looking for stuff to set on fire in the bullpen, and wearing earrings in the dugout in Cincinnati.

How about bottom of the 6th, game 7, 1-1 game after endy's miraculous play, bases loaded, one out, and Jose Valentin at the plate, full count...Turning Point!! STRIKE THREE SWINGING ON A PITCH IN THE DIRT!!! That, my friends, was the Fox Woods Resort Casino Turning Point of the season...if Valentin could only have laid off, or flew out, Mets, chances are, win the World Series...

The 2000 NY Mets had all 3 OF hit at least 15 HR and drive in 60 RBI, 20+ HR from 3 of 4 infielders, and 46 HR out of their catchers. This years team won't be able to say that...

For some reason, '98 often gets glossed over by bloggers on this site, especially by those who seem to have some kind of undying love for Bobby Valentine. Fact is, in essence, we had to win one game in five to at least tie for the wild card, and the team choked in a major way. I don't care how much or how little talent Bobby V. had to work with. If memory serves, the idea that Bobby V.'s playoff-caliber teams were notorious for choking down the stretch haunted me quite a bit going into that off-season and when the Mets almost choked again in September the following season, I couldn't imagine how Bobby V. would last another season in NY. But then what could have been a really disasterous collapse of the season was spun into a positive one, and Bobby V. became some kind of folk hero to some around here, because he had Benny Agbayani and Jay Payton in the outfield and he can double-switch better than our current manager.

I agree with your point about the blown opportunity after Endy's catch. If the Mets pick up a run or two there, the momentum stays with them and Shea rocks. STL has a much harder time coming back...

After blowing that chance, the eventual loss wasn't a surprise...

I'll go with Beltran last year... although not scoring after Endy's catch was probably more disappointing.

Was in London watching the game one a little laptop, at 5:30 in the morning, pacing, alone, and very drunk. Then there was the following days of depression without a Mets fan in sight to share my sorrow.

Actually, it was that Saturday. And you're right, they did get back to within 3 games going into their last series, but losing Friday, and then the Jordan dagger on Saturday sealed it.

I just believe that if they hadn't lost the game on the 23rd, and pulled to within 2.5, that they would have won the division.
