In Newsday, Mark Herrmann quotes from Bobby Cox as praising the Mets and their continued success in the National League East.
…i know the Mets are good…i don’t need cox to point it out to me…enjoy third place, buddy…
Cox, on Luis Castillo, as quoted by Newsday…
“I like this Castillo deal. I thought that was major. I bet you he’s a lifetime .300 hitter, and he knows how to play the game. That was a major pickup. He never makes an error and he’s on base all the time.”
…as i wrote last night, it’s bizarre how much castillo appears to be in pain when he isn’t actually running…i watched him while he stood out on second base last night, and he appeared to be in tons of pain…he was limping, pulling up on his legs, wincing, etc, it was awkward and alarming, yet seemd to be of zero concern to any one in the Mets dugout…then he bolted for third on a ground ball like he is totally fine…it’s strange to watch…

“enjoy third place, buddy…”
Easy Matt, we beat them… its over. He was just trying to pay a compliment, haha. I get the feeling you’d punch him in the face if given the opportunity.
I’ll hold him for ya!!
I think Darling explained it perfectly. When you have a knee injury (and I have two bad knees) it’s easier to run at top speed. The hard part is the slowing down, stopping or planting. That’s when it hurts. When the knee is flexed and all of the weight is on it.
I’m interested what the long-term plan with Castillo might be. It really seems like he could contribute for a couple years, but how limiting will the injuries prove to be? Also, is there a sense that Gotay’s defense will improve, or is he a positionless player?
IMHO Castillo would make a great bridge to Gotay.
Does anyone think A-Hern will ever be able to hit ML pitching?
NO! I think there is a better chance the Gotay improves defensively than A-Hern improves offensively.
a friend of mine who follows the twins sent me this:
mets w/o castillo: 59-47 (3 over phils, 3.5 over braves)
mets with castillo: 23-15 (6 over phils, 8.5 over braves)
twins w/o castillo: 17-22 (13 back of 1st)
twins with castillo: 55-51 (6 back of 1st)
While it’s nice to get kudos from Bobby, Omar should file tampering charges with the MLB Commissioner for Cox’s blatant solicitation of the Mets’ employee who will be a FA after the season. :)
And, no, A-Hern will never hit ML pitching. It’s a shame, because he’s great in the field and on the basepaths. If he was a decent contact hitter/obp guy, he’d be a young, uninjured Castillo.
I wanted him signed after ‘05.
I might be mistaken, but was it Castillo that made a comment about ‘not wanting to play in a city that boos their own players.’
Regardless, I think a 2-3 year deal could be in order. Willie likes solid vets with good gloves at 2nd, he’s tailor made to bat behind Reyes, and seems to be a good influence.
I would love to bring Castillo back, for like 2-3 years. If we were willing to give Valentin a contract, Castillo is 10 times better. Also, don’t forget that Santana was pissed that Castillo was traded…I’m hoping he wants to play with him again. I know the money has to be right, but I’m saying…it’d be nice.
Would Castillo have to have some kind of off season surgery so he’s healthy next season? Or, is this some kind of chronic knee injury (ala Curtis Martin) that just won’t go away?
Yes he would. We will need to repair a slight strain on his miniscus, its only acutely invasive and after the surgery and rehab he will be 100% healthy.
Maybe Cocks is saying he likes the Castillo deal because he feels semi-confident that Castillo will be out with an injury come playoff time, which is of concern to me.
Great pickup. And to think that all the “prognosticators” thought that the Mets “failed” to “answer” the Texeira deal. Funny thing is, whereever Castillo goes, they win. Maybe I’m wrong, but Marky boy’s never been on a winning team, has he?
