Last Saturday on SNY, Mets Weekly followed Keith Hernandez around the stadium and in to the broadcast booth, giving a profile on how he prepares for each game…
…check it out below…
…the man is hilarious, and i love every second of it…
…last night, a person who works for SNY asked me for my opinion of keith, which, of course, i could talk for hours about, because i find the guy to be insightful, goofy yet charming, and a total character if ever there was one…his on-air persona fascinates me, and cracks me up all at the same time…
…i love Ron Darling and keith in the booth with Gary Cohen…they have a fun, casual, smart style that is a joy to listen to…sure, they can get a bit silly at times, but i actually enjoy those moments, though i understand that sentiment is not shared by some media critics in new york…oh well…the thing is, i doubt keith is losing sleep over those critical words…
…frankly, i think those newspaper articles just embolden his legend, and make most fans like keith that much more…
Speaking of Hernandez, for a bit of Keith Trivia, go to Mets Walkoffs and Other Minutiae.

The team SNY put together couldn’t be better. All witty and insightful in their own way. They don’t root, but have fun. Anyone criticizing this team should just listen to on Rockies, Pirates, Braves, DBacks… game and see how much these guys add to the fun and flavor of watching baseball.
It hurts every time I have to watch the other team’s broadcasts (with the notable exception of the Dodgers–Vin is legend) because of DirecTV.
Mex is the man. Plan and simple.
As an “Extra Innings” subscriber, I tend to get the hometown broadcast for all games. So, I’ve heard quite a few announcers, and I have to say, SNY’s team is far and away the best in baseball, (or the NL, at least.) They just seem brighter and more perceptive than others, and don’t drip with arrogance like a Joe Buck or Jon Miller. I liked the Reds announcers, too (though there was a bit too much chitchat about high school football) but most local pairings are either cookie cutter sportscaster types and/or induce a state of sedation suitable for invasive surgery. The real difference is the dynamic — Cohen is an excellent play-by-play man, and he knows how to take advantage of having two intelligent, well-spoken former players in the booth.
Your dead on, Uni. I too, as an out-of-town Mets fan, watch the games on MLB Extra Innings, and the other teams can’t touch our Keith, Ron and Gary.
IMO, they are best… not just for the Mets, but in all of baseball of all time. Really. And I’ve seen many, going back to Bob, Linsey and Ralph!
Amen! I hate it when the Mets go on the road and I am forced to watch the opposing team’s broadcast. The game is simply not as fun to watch. The guys at SNY do a GREAT job and I enjoy watching their broadcasts!
I wonder what it would take to get Extra Innings to give you the option of which broadcast to watch… as they do on MLB.TV.
Hmm… let’s start a petition! :)
I totally agree … in fact, to be able to hear Gary, Ron, and Keith all the time, I’m running a Slingbox-like application off a computer in LI so I can watch all the games on SNY. The experience of being a Mets fan is definitely enhanced by their commentary.
Unfortunately, MLB.tv does not let you pick which broadcast to watch. they pick either the home or away feed, and I haven’t figured out what (if any) system they use to decide which viewers will get. the option is available only if you’re just listening to the radio feed, so i could listen to WFAN without video for any game.
My favorite broadcast moment during the “game” last night would have to be (i think) gary mocking keith’s lack of ability with the telestrater (i think i called that the right name – the thing where they can “draw” on the screen and the viewers can see what they draw) and had him practice by filling in the bottom of the “NY” on a busted part of the scoreboard. hilarious.
One of the funnier Keith moments was the other day when they were showing old clips from the 86 playoffs of the Mets being befuddled by Mike Scott, and staring at the scuffed balls in the dugout. The camera pans to Keith circa 1986 and Hernandez goes “Ooh look at that, that’s when I had a 32 inch waist.” Hilarious.
Without Keith, Ron, and Gary, what would I blog about? :)
Really, I love the guys. Yes, occasionally I could do without Keith and Gary’s movie reviews, but all in all to get sporting event, comedy, and buddy flick all in one suits me just fine.
Saw this the other day, what an ass

I’ve always viewed Keith constant harping regarding the rigors of his daily schedule as an attempt to bond with the common listener. Who doesn’t complain about their job? It is clear he just wants to have fun, just like the rest of us. And who is Phil Mushnick to be constantly whining about journalistic integrity. He works for the Post! There isn’t a more biased fishwrapper in New York.
To appreciate how great these guys are, just listen to the 1986 broadcasts with Tim “the Met outfielders are playing “TOO DEEP” McCarver and Fran “score it 5-4-3″ Healy. Ack! All 3 are sharp and insightful
Keith is hilarious and insightful. Ron is an Ivy league genius who knows pitching and is extremely perceptive to even the smallest of details only a former player could be. As a prior comment read, Gary is perfect in managing that booth. He da man.
I love them all. Keith is all the more endearing for those of us who remember his ferocity and intensity as a player. Ron has a slightly rueful quality, along with his analytical skills, that is also very engaging. Gary meshes with both of them beautifully. They all know the game, and better yet, they all have a well-developed sense of the absurdity of the game, and an appreciation of the passing baseball carnival.
In word they are all intelligent – and respect the audiences’ intelligence. In two words: they are intelligent and fun. Guess that’s three words…
I dont’t like to disrespect others, but if you do not LOVE the Mets booth you have no business writing about sports. Seriously, Darling is quite probably my favorite broadcaster in any sport. Ever. And Mex makes my top 5.
I’m also an ‘extra innings’ guy and think our guys are the best.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Atlanta guys rub me the worst. And Mark Grace is o.k. with the D’back’s but Darren Sutton needs a valium at the minimum.
