In Newsday, Mark Herrmann quotes from Bobby Cox as praising the Mets and their continued success in the National League East.
…i know the Mets are good…i don’t need cox to point it out to me…enjoy third place, buddy…
Cox, on Luis Castillo, as quoted by Newsday…
“I like this Castillo deal. I thought that was major. I bet you he’s a lifetime .300 hitter, and he knows how to play the game. That was a major pickup. He never makes an error and he’s on base all the time.”
…as i wrote last night, it’s bizarre how much castillo appears to be in pain when he isn’t actually running…i watched him while he stood out on second base last night, and he appeared to be in tons of pain…he was limping, pulling up on his legs, wincing, etc, it was awkward and alarming, yet seemd to be of zero concern to any one in the Mets dugout…then he bolted for third on a ground ball like he is totally fine…it’s strange to watch…
Morgan sent in the following e-mail, asking…
“On ESPN Radio this morning, Mike and Mike were talking about how they Mets would HAVE to be pulling for the Phillies to take the wild card so that, if we hold onto the best record in the NL, we get the NL Central winner in the NLDS, meaning Arizona and the Phillies could wail on each other for a round before we have to worry about them…
“I know, it’s assuming a lot, but what’s your feel on this? Or what is the feel around the team and local fans? Personally, while I’d be happy to knock out the Phillies, I wouldn’t mind them watching the playoffs from home.”
…honestly, morgan, last year i was hoping the Cardinals would make the playoffs instead of the red-hot Astros, because st. louis had been playing so badly…
…and we all know how that turned out…
…i’d bring up the Dodgers in 1988, but, frankly, i still can’t talk about it…
…in other words, be careful of what you wish for…
…actually, i just hope the Mets are playing their best baseball in October…if they do that, i really don’t think it will matter who or where they are playing…
Prior to last night’s game, Willie Randolph told reporters that the team is pleased with how Ramon Castro is responding while on a minor-league rehab assignment.
According to Randolph, Castro could rejoin the team within the next week or so.

On Monday night, Oliver Perez picked Tim Hudson off second base. After the game, Hudson told reporters, “Every time a pitcher gets on base now, I’m going to pick.”
Willie Randolph, as quoted by Steve Popper in the Bergen Record…
“If that’s the way he feels about it, take a shorter lead.”
…perfect response…well played…

According to Newsday, Billy Joel will be the final performer at Shea Stadium, “doing a string of concerts there before its planned demolition after the 2008 Mets season.”
…my friend continues to lament that joel sings with a british accent, despite being from new york, which i never understood…i can’t tell if he’s serious, or just joking around…but, it’s a funny bit, nevertheless…
…frankly, i’d prefer the last performance at shea to be when Taking Care of Business blares from its speaker following a World Series celebration…
Tagged Shea Stadium |According to Kevin Kernan in yesterday’s New York Post, “Tom Glavine wants to come back for a 22nd major-league season.”
During the day, Glavine also appeared in interviews on SNY’s Daily News Live, as well as on WFAN stating the same notion.
He is quoted as saying the same thing in each of today’s newspapers.
…i mean, it’s like he is on a book tour…
…essentially, glavine is saying that while he has not committed to playing next season, he has also not ruled it out, as he suggested he had during spring training, because a) he feels great, b) his family supports him, either way, and c) he’s pitching well…
…makes sense to me…i mean, seriously, if he feels great, if he is still having fun, if he’s still competitive, and he is still having success, and if his wife and kids still want him to play, well, then, he should keep playing…so, good for you, tommy…

Last night, Mike Pelfrey allowed one run, three hits and two walks in two innings of relief last night.
…he looked rocky at first, but settled down to pitch nicely in his second inning, getting Mark Teixeira to ground out, Jeff Francouer to pop out, and Andruw Jones to strike out looking…
Pelfrey, on pitching relief, while talking to reporters after last night’s loss to the Braves…
“If I want to help this team out in the post-season, it’s gonna be out of the bullpen…It’s a little bit of an adjustment period, I don’t have 30 minutes to warm up for the game, but I felt good getting loose today…It’s nothing I can’t handle. I started throwing today, it was like 17 pitches, and I was ready to go. So, I had plenty of time to get ready. I just need to be more aggressive in the strike zone… “They said, ‘Hey, you’re in the bullpen, El Duque’s back, he’s throwing good, you’re in the pen.’ I’m looking at this like an opportunity to say, ‘Hey, if I can show them something maybe I can make the post-season roster.’ So, I’m out there trying to do the best I can.”
…i still think he’s a starting pitcher, but a) it’s good to see him take on this new, temporary role with the right attitude, and b) there is no harm with getting a look at him pitching from the bullpen, since the team has so many starting pitchers at the moment…
…however, i can’t help but wonder what Aaron Heilman is thinking, watching pelfrey go from starter to reliever…good luck, mike…
Tagged Mike Pelfrey |During last night’s loss to the Braves, Aaron Sele allowed one run in relief, as did Mike Pelfrey, while Willie Collazo pitched one inning and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks.
…either the Braves were totally locked in at the plate last night, or the Mets pitchers, short of Phil Humber, were just off…
…collazo, or colazzo, depending on which jersey he is wearing, has looked decent since joining the team…he’s a Pedro Feliciano clone, to some extent…
…some fans were calling for collazo last month, as though he’d be an obvious and easy solution to the team’s recent bullpen struggles…but, i believe they were nothing more than the ‘everybody loves the back-up quarterback’ sensation, which is totally understandable…
…it’s not to say that collazo can’t be a solution…it’s just, in this era, i am fairly certain there is no magic bullet for what ails a bullpen…again, it’s a total crapshoot out there…guys are hot, they’re cold, they’re good on this team, not good on that team, this month they’re okay, next month they’re not, they pitch well with this arm slot, next week not so much…it’s just ridiculous and seemingly totally unpredictable…
…colleges are now grooming pitchers to throw in relief, and i hope this helps…however, until that pans out, the way i see it, the idea of what a bullpen is will continue to be a total mess for years to come…our expectations of these guys are totally out of whack, and if a starting pitcher could just last past the fifth inning, a lot of these issues would go away…
…so until a) starting pitchers begin pitching deeper in to games, and b) the idea of a ‘save’ gets stricken from our minds, and c) a better financial incentive is created so guys want to pitch in middle relief, i believe we’ll continue to have this constant anxiety about more or less every relief pitcher, including the guy in the minor leagues who we hope can be the answer to all these problems…
Last night, Paul Lo Duca hit a two-run home run, giving him at least one hit in each of his last six games.
Since returning from the disabled list, Lo Duca is batting .304 with three HR and 13 RBI in 14 games.
Lo Duca, on his hitting, while talking to
reporters after last night’s loss to the Braves…
“I feel good, and hopefully I keep going. This is the healthiest I’ve been a in while…it feels good. Hopefully I can keep this going, have a big September and all the way in to October.”
…he just looks sharp, and awake, and quick…on monday night, he jumped to his feet like a jack-rabbit, when trying to grab a wild pitch from Oliver Perez…last night, like other nights over the last week or so, he turned on a fastball as though his last name is Alou…good stuff…
