Read: Manager of the Year

by Matthew Cerrone on September 13th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

At MLB.com, columnist Jim Molony lists Willie Randolph and Tom La Russa as darkhorses, behind Bob Melvin, Bud Black and Ned Yost, in the race for the National League’s Manager of the Year.

…it has to be melvin…no way around it

John Maine, talking to reporters, regarding Randolph’s visit to the mound during a crucial spot in last night’s game, said…

“I love when Willie comes out there.  He always seems to know the right thing to say to me.”

…i think we all know where willie struggles, but it’s these situations in which he succeeds…

…actually, last week, while talking to WFAN, Astros manager Cecil Cooper told the show’s host that he tries to model himself after willie, because of the way he carries himself in the dugout and motivates his team to play so hard every night, all year long…

…i know i get criticized for not criticizing willie enough…

…but, to me, the manager is so overrated that i just don’t pay close enough attention to what he is or isn’t doing…for every decision that i assume to be black or white, odds are good that i just am not aware of all the grays…so why point fingers…as i’ll just be guessing at that point any way…

…what i do know is that the Mets win more times than not…they win when they’re hurt…they win when they’re short-handed…they win with a below-average pen…and they’re about to win back-to-back divisions for the first time ever…so, overall, it’s just hard for me to get all worked up over a pitching change, or a lineup move here and there, when his team continues to fight for him, play hard, and it continues to win…i’m not saying willie is perfect…not by a long shot…but he wins, and that’s the point…how he gets there is irrelevant to me

stop winning, and, believe me, things will change…just like they did with Art Howe, who i complained about relentlessly

until then, though, i’m content with just having fun, while enjoying the show

i hope you are, as well, because nothing lasts forever

News: Twins GM Ryan Resigns

by D.J. Short on September 13th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

ESPN.com reports that Twins GM Terry Ryan has resigned. A former Mets scout, Ryan has been at the healm of the Twins franchise for 12 seasons.

Assistant GM Bill Smith will take Ryan’s place.

…pretty surprising news…ryan has done a tremendous job keeping the twins in contention year in and year out…i wonder what impact, if any, this will have on locking up some of their young superstars, especially a certain left-hander…remember, they have a new stadium on the way, as well…

Stat: Wright Close and Late

by Mike Nichols on September 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

MetsBlog reader, John, sent in the following email question…

“In your preview before last night’s game that 15 of David Wright‘s 28 home runs have either tied a game or given the Mets a lead.  This seems good to me as 52% of his homeruns are game changing.  I was curious if you knew were our man stands in this stat against his peers and where he lies in the tying or go-ahead RBI categories.”

…using the ‘close and late’ statistic, which is a player’s results in the seventh inning or later with the batting team either ahead by one run, tied or with the potential tying run on deck, you can tell if a player is considered ‘clutch’…

…wright ranks 12th in the National League with a .343 batting average in this situation behind other MVP contenders Prince Fielder (.348) and Albert Pujols (.379), but slightly ahead of Chase Utley (.323)…

Stat: Wright In 0-2 Hole

by Mike Nichols on September 13th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

MetsBlog reader, Meghan, recently sent in the following email question…

David Wright‘s OBP and walk totals are both in the top 10 for the NL. Yet I notice that he is often behind in the count – frequently in an 0-2 hole. Is this my imagination? Do you have any statistics to support this? How does Wright compare to other hitters when faced with an 0-2 count.”

wright has only 107 at-bats this season when in an 0-2 count, so it is a bit of your imagination, but 48% of his at-bats have included a two strike count…

…in those at-bats with and 0-2 count, wright is batting .178 with an ..527 OPS, which is above the National League averages of .162 and .408 respectively…

…wright has seen the most success this season during an 0-1 count…he is batting .542 with 5 homeruns, and 21 RBIs in that situation…

…CORRECTION…

…wright is batting .343 with 7 homeruns and 16 RBIs in a 3-2 count…
