Alou's OPS is pretty hollow considering 1) he could only play about half a y ear 2) his situational hitting is the worst on the team this year out of any regular hitter -- worse than Green, worse than Milledge. 3) his salary of $8 million is way out of line for his small production. He's on pace for 45 RBIs this year. I'm sure Gomez with his legs, defense, and bat can equal or come very close to the overall production of Alou for a fraction of the cost.

Rowand is playing way over his head this year...no way I would pay 7-8M for the guy, but that is what he'll get. Alou in a reduced role with everyone else platooning works for me.

Find me that younger healthier player that can put up a .850- .900 OPS for a full season next year and I'm totally on board. I'll tell you one thing -- he's not in our farm system. Another thing is he's going to cost a bundle of prospects on the trade front and he's going to want a 4-6 year contract on the open market whoever this player may be.

i doubt its likely but maybe rowand could be convinced to move to LF in an attempt to stay healthy however i am skeptical of his numbers since im pretty sure most of the readers on this blog could hit at least 20 HRs in CBP if we had 550 ABs.

I would be more comfortable with someone that can put up alou type numbers while playing all season long, as good as the guys is his numbers arent irreplaceable esp by someone younger and healthier.

We all ragged on him for taking so long to get back from a quad strain but he goes all out on fly balls, running the bases, out of the box, every at bat. G, R,& K praise him constantly. I'd love to have him back another year. We rip on Omar for signing him but who woulda thunk our insurance policies (milledge, chavez and even gomez) wouldve ALL gone down. I say you expect him to play 115 games and you cope with the rest.

HEY MATT,

What is the LF production total this year (gomez, milledge, chavez, ledee, newhan, anderson, alou, easley) Yes...that's a lot of people to play LF. But just curious about the overall #s. Cant be too bad all around.

The thing is, I don't think we've seen enough from Gomez to justify anointing him the starter at the start of next year, and we've all seen how Endy gets exposed as he starts playing every day. The free agent market for a quality corner OF is nothing to get excited about. I honestly would rather overpay for the 90+ games you get from Alou at this point, with an assortment of Endy/Marlon Anderson/Gomez filling in when he hits the DL, rather than just go into the season with Gomez and Endy as your guys.

However, if Omar can find a trading partner for a corner OF, you can let Alou walk/retire. However, my preference would be for Minaya to focus on getting the bullpen back to 2006 form during the off-season, rather than wasting time and resources on a problem that just takes money to solve.

It is interesting to note as of today both Floyd and Alou have exactly the same number of at bats 259 (although Floyd has more games). Floyd has 768 ops with 6hr, 41 rbi, 75hits and 9 doubles. Alou has 916ops with 12hr, 36 rbi, 85 hits and 15 doubles.

I say pick him up, since it is a reasonable price. Just expect the young guys to get plenty of time covering for him.

Unless there is a really good option, which there doesn't seem to be (as a FA, same as last year) he makes a good stop gap.

Milledge should be ready for full time duty next year, but none of the other young guys they have now (read: Gomez) are likely to be.
