For me, in some ways, possiblly the best scenario and worst, would be Mets-Boston WS. It would be the worst because, until proven otherwise, they ARE the best team in baseball. For those of us, including myself to a degree, that felt like the Cards had no business being in last year's WS, the Mets were the NL best. AND, we got slapped silly by the Red Sox last season. Also, the Red Sox have clearly the best record in baseball this season. So, for us to play the Red Sox would be frightening, yet if we beat them, we could safely say we are true champions of the ML. Of course, there would still be some in the Bronx that would say it was cheap, because we didn't beat the Yanks, so we wouldn't be the Kings of NY. And those in Atlanta that would say we tied the season series with them, but whatever. Actually, I think most Braves fans are gonna "shutty" as the King of Queens says - they probably have already crawled under a rock until the spring.

Slap yourself hard, Matt. Never wish any level of success for the Skankees. Hard to imagine winning a championship and saying "jeez, I wish it were the Yankees we beat, I'm unfulfilled." To me, it was far sweeter last year seeing the Spanks get ousted in the 1st round, knowing we were going deeper than they.

Frankly, I'm still rooting for a late surge by Detroit to oust the Yucks. A pox on their house.

It really coalesced for me as long ago as '86 when Vin Scully just could not manage to keep the disdain out of his voice when doing the postseason games. I know Scully is practically revered among broadcasters, but I have hated his guts ever since.

As far as the hometown sportswriters go, I just read them for the facts, as much as that' s possible. I don't have a lot of respect for too many of them. It seems to me that what passes for sports journalism these days is a continuous process of tale-carrying and pot-stirring-- junior high school gossip carried into perpetuity.

The way I see it, this is pretty much just specific to me, but none of my teams have won a championship in my life (not counting when i was 1 in 1986), Ive seen the Mets, Raiders, and Knicks all lose in crushing heartbreaking fashion in the championship series/game, and I was at game 5 of the 2000 WS to add to it....So since Ive NEVER been able to celebrate a world title i dont care WHO it comes against hell i dont care if by some strange rule the royals make the WS. Although I dont care who we beat playing the yankees to me the risk outweighs the reward since I know the risk and I know how brutal that feels but since I dont know what it is to win a WS i dont want to risk having that terrible feeling in my gut for 5 months. Since i dont know what it is to beat a non yankees team theres no comparison to say "id be happier if we beat the yanks".

I'm really torn on wishing for anotehr Subway series...the last one was so painful!

But, the upside of actually beating the Yankees and taking the Championship? It would be ridiculous....

All of that aside, let's just get there first. Wasn't last year painful enough?

I doubt anyone is thinking that it's not a "real" championship unless we beat the yankees; just that it would be reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaally sweet if we did (and proportionately painful if we lost to them).

Well I understand, and feel, the need for revenge against the Yankees, my true desire is not revenge. It's to render them so meaningless than revenge is pointless. If they both make the World Series, all those fair weather, "New York" Fans that are currently rooting for the Yankees are still going to root for them, regardless of the outcome. Ifthe Yankees miss the playoffs, or go 3 and out, then those fans begin to migrate to Queens, giving money to the Mets, that leads to more money for them, more aquisitions, and hopefully more winning.

Cheer for Met Yankee world series? No way in hell. I'm not one of those fans with the inferiority complex of "Well, it's not really the same if we don't go through the Braves and Yanks in the postseason to win the World Title." Screw that. We control our own destiny, and can't help what other teams make it into the playoffs. It doesn't matter who we play, just so long as it ends the way we want it to end.

The 2006 Cardinals clearly were not the best team last year, but I'm sure that thought didn't ruin the champagne shower for them and their fans. How you get there is meaningless, it's the end result that matters.
