preGame: Mets vs. Phillies (Game 3)
By D.J. Short - Sep 16, 2007 12:25 pm

The Game

The first-place Mets (83–64) look to salvage one from the Phillies (79-69) this afternoon at Shea Stadium, starting at 1:10 pm EDT.

The Lineup

The Pitchers

Oliver Perez (14-9, 3.42 ERA) tries to be the stopper for the Mets. He was solid vs. the Braves in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Perez has already established a career-high for victories in a season (he won 12 games in 2004). He is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in two starts vs. the Phillies this season, but was effectively wild vs. them back on August 29th, allowing three runs over six innings while striking out 10 and walking five.

Adam Eaton (9-9, 6.31 ERA) pitches for the Phillies. He has allowed four runs or more in six out of his last seven starts. The only start where he didn’t was against — you guessed it — the Mets on August 28th. He hasn’t won a start since July 20th. In three starts vs. the Mets this season, Eaton is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA. The equivalent of Mets’ kyrptonite, Eaton is 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA at Shea Stadium in his career.

The Notes

The Phillies have held the Mets to three runs or less in six of their last seven meetings. The Phillies have won seven consecutive games vs. the Mets.

Moises Alou carries an 19-game hitting streak into this afternoon’s game. He is 11-for-26 (.423) with two homers vs. Eaton.

Pat Burrell has four homers in 14 career at-bats vs. Perez.

Our season has come, their season has gone. Let’s end this nonsense today. Let’s Go Mets

  2. upstatemet says:

We better cause if they win it will give them a tremendous lift and 3 and a half out with 15 to play is highly possible.

  3. stickguy says:

Win today, and all is pretty much forgotten.

Lose today, and the Phils are once again off life support, with a chance at the division, not just the WC.

I think Willie even realized this, since the regular line up is in. No resting everyone and putting in the B line up today.

So I guess the vets that sleptwalked through the weekend and getting penalized, since they have to play today instead of getting Sundy off!

And don’t expect the Phils to play below .500 against the dregs of the league again. It sould not surprise me at all to see them go 10-5, 11-4, something ike that (adjusted for however many games they actually have left! But at least win 2/3 of their games, since they are the better team in every game after today.

So, if the MEts win today, .500 from them should do it. If they lose, I am not actualy sure I feel comfortable that they will win enough to stay in front, or at least without having to stumble to the finish barely ahead.

And remember, as long as the race stays close, the regulars don’t get rest, and the key pitchers (SP and RP) have to work harder.

So just win today and relieve the stress.

  4. letsgomets says:

im feeling 2 homers from moises today..lets go mets

  5. Krusty The Klown says:

the mets really need ollie to go 7 or 8 innings. i don’t trust willie’s bullpen moves.

  6. GetsByBuckner415 says:

Lets Go Ollie…big game today…5.5 or 3.5…lets end it now.

  7. Stems says:

seriously, lets stop screwing around with these guys…

let’s give them a sense of reality and blow them out today.

the only reason the phils are even this close to postseason is because of the mets bad play against them…

  8. Krusty The Klown says:

just heard brian lawlrence is getting t/ms start……… why not humber? yeah humber and fernando martinez are really helping us clinch the division right now. its not liek chad cordero couldve helped………..

  9. ibleedblueandorange says:

Here we go with one of those “non-crucial” September games. See the replies to my comment in yesterday’s post game to understand that one.

  10. DWright is King says:

    phillies blog:

    http://www.beerleaguer.com/beerleaguer/2007/09/phillies-outlas.html#comments

AWH copies and pastes all our comments on that blog so that he and the other phillies can discuss us…lol

    • ghobot says:

man, its weird over there. are those dudes serious?

      • DWright is King says:

yeah…..they really hate met fans…its funny because they think there’s this huge rivalry when the truth is met fans just think they’re annoying

  11. upstatemet says:

    Nice throw Mike

  12. Krusty The Klown says:

lol, and the mental lapses begin again

  13. upstatemet says:

    Olie saves it for now

  14. icedrake523 says:

Let’s hope Willie doesn’t screw this one up.

  15. upstatemet says:

our starting pitching has been good it’s the rest of it

  16. ghobot says:

ok, i can already tell this is going to be a very dark place for y’all today, so, enjoy the game!

  17. MetsMachine says:

Not that this affects the team but I thought I should share this with everyone:

I was in Manhattan last night seeing some old friends…I got into Penn around 9 thirty and must have seen 7 guys within 10 minutes walking around in Burrell, Howard, and Rollins jerseys.

Then I got to the bar….and there were more of them. It’s like they all flocked in from Philly…meanwhile not a Mets jersey in sight.

Just pisses me off. Like were giving them the authority to brag. Can we win today please? And not just win…can we embaress this team for once. A 10 run blowout?

Oh wait…Adam Eaton is Cy Young vs us….nevermind.

    • ghobot says:

man its not worth it to stress so much. the reason philly fans are up here is because they know how crappy their city is , and need any excuse to come enjoy themselves without fear of robbery ,carjacking or choking mediocre sport teams. man, give em a break, it must be really hard.

  18. Krusty The Klown says:

    STOP WITH THE SB ATTEMPTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Navy_Mets says:

why, somebody needs to try and get this team rolling….it is only the 1st you know

      • kendychavez says:

exactly, it’s the first inning. there’s no need to takes risks like that. you take risks when your back is against the wall and you gotta make something happen.
let people HIT. at least attempt to string some hits together. homerun/xbh threat at the plate and a statistically terrible pitcher. you want beltran hitting with guys on base, that’s the point of hitting him cleanup.

  19. upstatemet says:

I wish our catcher could throw like that

  20. letsgomets says:

krusty that is just stupid…stolen bases our apart of our team…seriously how good would we consider reyes if he couldnt steal bases? and would wright even be considered a mvp if he didnt have 30 stolen bases added to his stats

    • Krusty The Klown says:

because u have ur best hitter up(yes beltran is better than wright)

      • letsgomets says:

apparently you dont understand the game of baseball. and you must not realize how good beltran hits when he leads off an inning. i dont have the numbers but they showed them on sny the other day and they were very very impressive and right after they showed the numbers he led off that inning with a double off the wall

        • kendychavez says:

yeah, good argument. you’d rather have your cleanup hitter leading off an inning than hitting with a guy on base. you are certainly wise, sir.

        • letsgomets says:

beltran had a 1-2 count. now he gets a new count if wright had been safe there a single would have scored him and we would have taken the lead. thats how the game is played..like it or not

  21. DWright is King says:

anybody else think that maybe something is wrong with beltran’s eyes…maybe he needs contacts or something

  22. Krusty The Klown says:

oh god, reyes need 3 days off this is total bs so many mental lapses

  23. upstatemet says:

Wow,look at that LOOK on Reyes face……..that says it all

  24. DWright is King says:

wow..will the real jose reyes please stand up….

  25. letsgomets says:

he took that ground ball for granted as did cohen

    • Darryl Strawberry says:

This game is over and so is tomorrow’s with Lawrence going. This team has lost all focus and execution.

  26. Navy_Mets says:

well no matter how good our starters are if they continue to have 45 pitches through 2IP they are in trouble

    • MetsMachine says:

When they continue to walk the ballpark….its tough to keep the pitch count low.

It seems as if the Mets walk batters every 5 minutes.

  27. icedrake523 says:

I wonder if I can still get a refund on my Reyes jersey.

  28. Krusty The Klown says:

ive said it before, and ill say it again, Rickey Henderson is TERRIBLE for Jose

    • DWright is King says:

that might be true…and who knows how many people have tried to alter Reyes’ approach this year:Down, HoJo,henderson. that begins to screw with your head. And if Willie had to sit down and talk to him about his attitude too…well then he probably doesn’t know who he is anymore.

    • upstatemet says:

You may be right cause all he worries about lately is thestolen base and forgot how to do everything else.

    • irish_eagle says:

One thing that bothers me about Rickey as coach is that he could run as much as he wanted because he had a much easier defensive job than Reyes does. He could pretty much switch off on Defense, and my memory was that he wasn’t a great outfielder.

  29. letsgomets says:

stop worrying soo much..the same exact thing happened 2 weeks ago when they swept us and then every rightened itself. so we do not play well against the phillies. who cares today is the last time we will see them because they will struggle the rest of the way just like they always do. come in off the ledge and relax a little bit

    • MetsMachine says:

No sugarcoat boy. It’s embaressing, and cause for concern.

Our SS cant hit…we all knew that. Now, he cant field either? Stop making everything seem like its happy time at Shea.

As I type this Adam Eaton continues to mow down the Mets with his no hit stuff.

Wonder how all the other teams hit him.

  30. Achilles400 says:

This is embarrassing. Reyes has been a no show for a month and why the hell is Lawrence pitching tomorrow?

I’d be scared to death if the Phillies and mets meet in the playoffs.

    Nice inning guys, why bother.

  31. EastFallowfield says:

Probably didn’t help when someone who called himself “Metsblog” posted there before the 2nd Phils sweep (the 4 gamer) that Met fans were going to own Beerleaguer, just as they owned Citizens Bank Park and the Mets were gonna take the series.

  32. Achilles400 says:

OP is a mental midget. How is this team even hanging on to first?

  33. MetsMachine says:

Ahh lovely. Hit after falling behind to Burrell…walk Howard.

Great job Perez…gotta love that mental stability.
Not that it matters…2 runs is all Eaton should need.

  34. MetsMachine says:

    Walk……walk…….walk……walk…..walk…

When will this team learn? Paging Rick Peterson:

Maybe its less bullpen sessions, and more psychiatric sessions for our pitchers.

  35. icedrake523 says:

Looks like another 12 BB game for Perez. Will this kid stop trying to strike out everyone and just get outs?

    • MetsMachine says:

      He will never learn.

The Mets wont crack 3 on the scoreboard all day.
      Phlily pitching is too good.

      • washtiger says:

        “Philly pitching is too good.”

Against the Mets anyway. Boy, do we make the their staff look like a bunch of Cy Young’s or what…?

  36. washtiger says:

Isn’t this team embarassed with its play against the Phillies? Losing 7 straight is inexcusable. What gives?

  37. Achilles400 says:

Just forfeit and save the bullpen.

  38. icedrake523 says:

This is supposed to be the class of the NL?

I really wouldn’t mind it if the Mets missed the playoffs. They definitely aren’t going to win the WS if they are playing like this against a team they need to beat. Only good things could come from missing the playoffs.

  39. Navy_Mets says:

Everyone keeps saying how the Phillies will collapse after this series and blah blah blah…do you realize we go to a worse hitting ballpark than Shea and we have Lawrence and Pelfrey in 2 of 3?

  40. grikke says:

Finally a ball dropping the Mets’ way.

  41. Achilles400 says:

anybody else not able to get into the bleachers?

  42. upstatemet says:

    we need carma

  43. upstatemet says:

all we want is get on base here Luis and let the other guys drive you in

  44. Achilles400 says:

    Huge rally for the Muts

  45. MetsMachine says:

God forbid we get a hit there……and have a big inning.

    God Forbid.

  46. Achilles400 says:

    they suck

  47. MetsMachine says:

Ariiiight Mets. 1 run. That will get it done!!

  48. Achilles400 says:

    wow, just wow

    Adam Eaton

what else is there to say

  49. Achilles400 says:

    Adam Eaton, Cy Young candidate

  50. Achilles400 says:

under over for Oliie’s total pitches this inning? 45?

  51. MetsMachine says:

    hahahahaahahahaha

i think its time to exit the field, go shower, and go to sleep.

    this is actually getting funny.

  52. Achilles400 says:

I have never seen anything like this in my life

  53. upstatemet says:

They look like the little Rascals

    • icedrake523 says:

That’s an insult to the Little Rascals.

    • MetsMachine says:

They really do. I’d rather see the AA Mets playing this game.

I gaurantee you it’d be a more competitive game.

They look like retarded kids out there.

  54. Achilles400 says:

Rollins for MVP or Utley Rollins co MVPs

  55. Navy_Mets says:

    We rock!

  56. Achilles400 says:

and now the Mets get Lazy to boot.

  57. washtiger says:

    PATHETIC!!!

    It’s a nice a day outside, I’m outta here.

We will be lucky to hold on to first place. Maybe a monumental collapse is what is needed, expecially for all the Wilie bashers.

  58. MetsMachine says:

Gonna be a short October boys. Enjoy the remaining games while you still can.

This team is about as far from a legit playoff threat as they come.

  59. letsgomets says:

yea screw the mets id rather have them lose 100 games rather then be up by atleast 3.5 games late in september. lets go back to the way things were about 5 year ago

    • MetsMachine says:

Letsgomets….I wouldn’t expect any less from you, than unrealistic sugarcoated spin.

The Mets could lose this game 15-1 and you’d be back here to tell me how its a positive sign they didn’t make an error for the remaining 5 innings.

You might be the only person on thsi board who ISNT mad and embaressed about this debacle of a game. Go get your head checked.

  60. Achilles400 says:

    When does Hockey start?

  61. stickguy says:

This is really ridiculous now. Once the Phils finish the latest sweep, I now expect them to crank out to the division lead, if this is the best the Mets can play.

They act like they have everything locked up already, and are playing hung over. Perez is a freaking mess today, and when you check the box score and see 1 hit in 3 innings against the worst SP in the league (well, next to Brian Lawrence!) but 3 errors, that is pitiful.

If this ends up being a 9-1 shellacking, I fully expect the entire stadium (or at least the 25 people left at the end) to soundly boo the team as a whole, and I can’t say I would blame them.

Based on the performance so far this weekend, what exactly gives you confidence they can even do better than .500 against the Marlins and Nats?

Hopefully they settle down and put something together and pull this one out. If not, someone needs to have a long tirade behind closed doors.

Given where they were 3 days ago, the fact that the division could even be in play is nuts, but here it is.

  62. Navy_Mets says:

This is what confuses and frustrates the hell of me and I am sure most fans. If Willie and the team to continue to preach this even keel mentality and how we have the veteran presence to prevent losing streaks and such, then how in the world do they play this bad for this many games in a row. Where are the adjustments, where are the leaders of this team?

  63. Achilles400 says:

The only bigger losers than the Mets are that couple.

  64. letsgomets says:

this is sickenin…not the game(although it is tough to watch) but the “fans” here on metsblog. i hope everyone that is on the edge of the cliff and ready to give up on the mets entire season jumps off because you dont deserve to experience the playoffs if u r ready to throw this season out the window even tho we still will have atleast 3.5 game lead if we lose today (which we wont)

it seems as it most “mets fans” today arent fans…they just jumped on the bandwagon at the beginning of last season and expect to be the best team on earth and never have any competition…its one thing to have concern about your team but its another to think about throwing away the season because they ONLY have a 4.5 game lead late in september

    • MetsMachine says:

When a team plays this poorly, any fan can critique them.

Go get your kleenex and stop complaining about bloggers.

      • letsgomets says:

i think you need to go get a kleenex. i can atleast watch a baseball game without thinking about committing suicide

        • MetsMachine says:

please site on this thread where i talked about attempting suicide. show me.

im telling you this team BLOWS right now. ok?
can you grasp on to that? they are embaressing, lifeless, and blow.

in an hour and a half, im going to the bar to watch the Jets, drink beers, and eat chicken wings. then tomorrow…im gonna go to work.

Not suicide. Pointing out a team that blows.

I hope for your sake, you realize the difference.

        • letsgomets says:

if this team blows so much why r u a fan? y dont u go find a team that doesnt “blow”

        • MetsMachine says:

Seriously, are you kidding me? Your retort is laughable. Good comeback.

Here’s a reading comprehension review for you.

They blow RIGHT NOW. I actually wrote that a few minutes ago. Right now..this weekend…this game.
And I’m venting about it…on a blog, where I’m allowed to.

Because my team sucks at the current moment, doesn’t disclude me from being a fan. Shut the F up already.

        • letsgomets says:

i have seen ur comments before, not just today…its basically the same time the mets lose a close game or a big game that they apparently blow.

        • MetsMachine says:

sure sure. site for me, and i’ll believe you.

i have plenty of good points on this blog, and i’ve had other bloggers tell me im right on target.

it takes a real fan to appreciate good play (like the last 2 weeks…where I was very positive), and bad play like this weekend. And until you find me an amendment in the constitution that bans me from speaking my mind, I suggest you say your peace, I’ll stay mine, and lets stop biting at eaach others posts.

We’re obviously not going to see eye to eye on this.
However, after the Mets are eliminated from the playoffs…I’ll be back here to tell you I told you so.

        • letsgomets says:

ok..we can stop debating if u’d like…but how could you say they wont make the playoffs? is it because they cant beat the phillies? or because of our terrible play recently (which i think is because of the phillies) or because our bullpen cant pitch and we barely ever get timely hitting? im really wondering here on this question…just trying to understand your mindset

          ya gotta believe

    • Navy_Mets says:

Please don’t confuse my frustration with fair-weathering

    • Achilles400 says:

I love when one fan explains to another what a fan is.

  65. Navy_Mets says:

sunny skies my ass…the lack of fundamentals (2 hands) cost Alou that ball

  66. Achilles400 says:

Lets see how the Mets screw this up.

  67. Achilles400 says:

    There’s a start! Popup specialists.

  68. MetsMachine says:

approaching 8 straight losses to the same team. Someone needs to check the last time thats happened.

You would think a team is gonna win one of 8 by accident.

  69. Achilles400 says:

    Yeah Baby! One run!

    • MetsMachine says:

Haha….still waiting for a produced run where we don’t have to sacrifice a run. If thats possible vs Johan Eaton…

      • MetsFaninOH says:

We are lucky to get the sac run. I mean come on bloggers, Eaton has an ERA of 6.21. We are lucky we got out of a no-hitter. We should be counting our blessings… and giving the philly’s credit. We will get some pay-back…what the f, I sound like Willie.

  70. Achilles400 says:

    Nice eye Endy

  71. upstatemet says:

this game is only in the forth inning and it seems like hours have gone bye

  72. Achilles400 says:

Cool, get to watch another inning of the strike zone challenged OP.

  73. MetsMachine says:

I think the Mets really got to Eaton that inning….they roughed him up good. Let’s get to that Philly pen!

  74. Achilles400 says:

OP the control Specialist. Ineffectively wild.

  75. metman1964 says:

They are making me sick to my stomach. There is no energy and enthusiasm from this team. It all stems from their boring manager. He sucks so bad. I have to believe he has told Reyes to cool off his cocky attitude and dancing. Reyes has not been himself and has not shown any energy or
cockiness that he has shown. This team was not able to beat the Braves, now its the Phils. It’s all physiological that they can not go out and dominate this team.
I can not picture Pea Brain Willie aka Joe Torre Jr, in the locker giving a speech to pump up his team and create excitement for them. He poseses no sense of urgency to WIN!!! I say send him back to the Skankees free of charge. He has no management skills and shows a poor knowledge of the game to stimulate runs. WHEN WILL THE WILPONS REALIZE THAT THEIR TEAM SUCKS AND BLAMES WILLIE. LET ME ADD THAT RICK ( I AM OVER RATED AKA REGIS PHILBIN) PETERSON SUCKS TOO. HE NEEDS TO STOP OVER ANALYZING EVERY PITCH AND EVERY MOVE HIS PITCHER MAKES. WHY IS BRIAN JOEY LAWRENCE THROWING TOMORROW?? WHERE ARE YOUR YOUNG STUDS TO PITCH. THEY WOULD PROBABLY DO BETTER THEN A GUY WHO HAS SHOWN NOTHING!!! THIS STEMS FROM PEA BRAIN WILLIE.
    WIILIE MUST GO

  76. kendychavez says:

i can’t believe they JUST got somebody up in the bullpen after 3 balls to helms. there’s 10 pitchers available today, why such a slow hook? oli has had no control since the first

  77. Achilles400 says:

    Good night.

  78. Achilles400 says:

    There is your MVP

  79. icedrake523 says:

They better hit Rollins his next time at bat. It will be their last chance this season.

  80. Navy_Mets says:

It’s still only 3 runs but now the Mets have to do something they haven’t done since the first game of this homestand…..score more than 5 runs

    • cbusmetsfan says:

Mets suck…they’re doing this September what they did last year when they took way too long to clinch the NL East. The only difference is they only have a 4 game lead now instead of 16. Willie is a fool who can’t manage a team or get them up for game or whatever. I hate the guy and have hated him since he’s been here. If the Mets make the playoffs, great. If they don’t great too because Willie should get the boot. I know errors are players’ faults but getting the team ready to go and prepared falls on the manager and he is not a good one. Good thing the Mets are playing some bad teams to end up the year or this homestand would have been the start of the end for this season.

  81. MetsFaninOH says:

    COME ON MVP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. Krusty The Klown says:

    yyaaaaa carlossssssss

  83. DWright is King says:

    thank u mr mole!!

  84. Navy_Mets says:

See I told ya’ll only 3 runs down ain’t nothin!

  85. metsforever says:

I would get excited, but guess who is pitching next.

  86. SodaPopinski says:

    FINALLY

  87. upstatemet says:

    a momentum changer ,let’s hope

  88. SodaPopinski says:

alright…time to finally get some runs off this bullpen

  89. kendychavez says:

what a team we have here, to be able to score 5 off a dominant ace like adam eaton! now FINISH IT

  90. DWright is King says:

pls score some more runs before motaroids comes out..who nose maybe mota went back on the juice and will pitch brilliantly..lol

  91. upstatemet says:

Green should of took his holiday today

  92. dboy0308 says:

Did anyone just notice how funny some of those pictures in the mets cookbook were

Wagner looked like he was about to murder someone with that huge knife in his hand

  93. Navy_Mets says:

No runs for Philly this inning, gotta keep that momentum on our side for once.

  94. Krusty The Klown says:

mota should brush back burrell here, seriously

  95. Krusty The Klown says:

anddddddd he begins his inning with 3 straight balls. im surprised mota throws so many balls, being that he dosnt have any

  96. DWright is King says:

he could’ve at least plunked him

  97. kendychavez says:

keith and ron are ridiculous. a reliever doesn’t want to look over his shoulder and see someone warming as soon as he comes in? too damn bad. get some outs consistently and you won’t have to worry about it. there should be somebody up right now

  98. DWright is King says:

    amazing baseball

  99. upstatemet says:

just when you think they stink…………..they do

    • surfbum989 says:

has anybody thought maybe willie is like pete rose and betting but only agaisnt the mets,, what a moron,, i always backed willie up but are you kidding me bringing mota in after we tied the game what a moron

  100. Navy_Mets says:

    unbelievable is right!

  101. Krusty The Klown says:

has willie lost control of his team? does he not teach them fundamental baseball?

  102. surfbum989 says:

well who hasnt seen that coming

  103. washtiger says:

Is Willie using Mota in these situations to ensure a bad result, in order to stick it to Omar? Why else? Mota should have been DFA’ed a long time ago!

    • natew says:

I think its the other way around. I think at some point Omar will have to release Mota so Willie wont keep going to him, and so he cant be on the postseason roster. Willie just seems content to keep calling for the dead horse.

  104. DWright is King says:

Here’s the one bright spot in all of this….maybe Mota just blew his shot on being on any potential postseason roster

  105. Krusty The Klown says:

    sosa has some guts

    • surfbum989 says:

the funniest thing i ever heard was that Willie is up for manager of the year,, this team sucks now and is managed by an absolute retard

  106. SodaPopinski says:

    the last straw.

get him out. release him, kill him, whatever you have to do. i never want to see him in a mets uniform again…

  107. upstatemet says:

They guys never challenge anyone, must be the Rick Peterson work around the hitter method

  108. washtiger says:

When you’ve made 5 errors in a game, and given up 9 BB’s (so far!), you don’t deserve to win. The Mets are doing everything they possibly can to give this game away. Frustrating…

  109. DWright is King says:

so i think i’ve seen it all this series…anyone else??

  110. Hellbelly says:

Is rick peterson still a genius?

    • icedrake523 says:

The problem is he makes everyone throw low and eliminates a high strike. The only guy who throws high strikes is Pedro because he still has that mentality from Boston.

  111. icedrake523 says:

Willie should have started the inning with Sosa instead of Mota.

Granted, Mota should have had a double play. He also should not have walked Burrell or Rowand. He didn’t get himself out of a jam, he put himself in a bigger one.

These guys need to learn 4 balls is a walk, not 5.

  112. upstatemet says:

What a crappy bull pen we weave

  113. DWright is King says:

maybe he had to clear the bases to be able to start pitching effectively??

  114. MetsMachine says:

This team is absolutely….and I mean absolutely an embaressment. The bullpen is horrid. The defense is horrid.

This team is going ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE this year.
    NOWHERE.

  115. Navy_Mets says:

Is this the low point…..we better hope so…..

  116. metsforever says:

4 in the loss. no more phillies. we still have a chance, but willie has to be stopped. who didn’t know that this would happen? not totally mota’s fault this time, but he didnt’ have to walk the ballpark

  117. MetsMachine says:

How are there fans still at this game?!?

I’d of left 15 minutes ago when Mota came in, went to piss on the outside of Shea…and went home.

This bullpen is a laughing stock. Good job Omar.

  118. natew says:

So when do Humber, Collazo, and Joe Smith get a chance to show what they have?

There are only 14 games left and there are only four semi-reliable relievers out there. So are the new guys going to get a shot, or will the same guys keep blowing up games?

I want to see Joe Smith and Humber make at least as many relief appearances as Mota and Sosa the rest of the way. Its only fair to their teamates, to give them the shot at the best postseason pen.

    • DWright is King says:

yeah, where r the other relievers???

    • irish_eagle says:

I’d be very surprised if any of the ‘young’ guys got on the post-season roster, other than maybe Pelfry.

      • natew says:

Its not about them making it, its about them getting a fair chance. At this point there is no way they could be worse than Mota. They might be a hell of a lot better, but with Willie continually going to Mota we’ll probably never know.

  119. MetsMachine says:

8 games in a row and counting that the Mets havn’t scored more than 5 runs.

    • Navy_Mets says:

Say what you want but they miss Delgado and his 80 rbis

      • MetsMachine says:

No they dont. Delgado cant save this team.

        This team misses 2 things:

A bullpen that doesn’t completely suck.

And a manager who isnt a complete retard.
        Bring back Bobby V.

  120. MetsMachine says:

Not happening. Willie loves his guys…hits veterans.

If he doesn’t keep pitching them, how do you expect them to get in a groove? You know…a little rhythem.

  121. Krusty The Klown says:

lo duca swings at ball 4, 5, 6, and 7 great job u whiny bitch

  122. Stems says:

how is 5 errors and 9 walks Wiilies fault?!?!?

    people please…. shut it….

    • MetsMachine says:

Its not just this game Stems…

It’s been all season. His in game strategic moves are not good. We all know it. He’s not cut out for the NL. Simple as that.

And I think were all growing tired of his passive agressive, even keel attitude, never gets fired up, never argues, gives you the same post game speech every day.

This team needs consistant kicks in the ass. Willie is not the guy for the job. He sucks.

  123. Achilles400 says:

Wow, Rollins looked lie Reyes there.

  124. Achilles400 says:

Conine does not deserve any ABs, another horrendous double switch by Willie

  125. Aquadealer says:

Willie consistently puts his relievers in postions to fail. It should have been anyone but Mota in there last inning. His BP managment is beyond awful. He has to go.

  126. Achilles400 says:

Tiger Woods is the only athlete you can count on.

  127. DWright is King says:

at least we ge to listen to gary’s beautiful singing voice!

  128. natew says:

Willie fails at the double switch again… You dont have to double switch because you’ll just end up changing the pitcher anyway… wow! just wow!

None of these relievers can go a second inning except Heilman.
How can a manager be so unaware of what is going on with his bullpen for so long?

    • MetsMachine says:

Because he’s not a smart man. Thats no secret.

Being a 3rd base coach and managing an NL team…2 different beasts. Very obvious Willie cant handle it.

If our bullpen wasnt so damn good last year…he would have been exposed in 2006.

  129. Achilles400 says:

Willie uses the wishful thinking method of managing.

  130. Achilles400 says:

    What, no double switch?

  131. DWright is King says:

i would be the happiest woman ever if the phillies can blow this 5 run lead

  132. natew says:

11th walk of the day… but hey its 4:00 and the Jets are on.

    punch out Maverick!

  133. Achilles400 says:

    Welcome back Joe smith!

  134. DWright is King says:

    welcome back mr smith

  135. upstatemet says:

doesn’t matter who’s pitching today they all stink

  136. Raphael Santana says:

    OVERRATED OVERRATED

Typical new yorker fans —mass exodus in the 6th. Way to support your team you heartless losers.

    Go Phils

    • DWright is King says:

yeah “go Phils” as in just go away……

    • icedrake523 says:

If you’re a Phillies fan, it’s ironic you should be bashing us and calling us fair weather fans. All Philly fans do is boo their team and do Eagles chants. Even when your team is in 2nd place during June.

  137. DWright is King says:

    haha funny

  138. Achilles400 says:

Whatever happened to Smith’s 92 mp fastball?

  139. upstatemet says:

Congrats Mets you’ve been OWNED. Whatever killer instinct is, we don’t have it!

  140. Achilles400 says:

    Gift from the ump

  141. Achilles400 says:

Man the Mets look like my softball team.

  142. Aquadealer says:

Good thing we didnt use Smith earlier…..We might still be tied.

And hes the only one with balls enough to hit someone even if it was accidental.

  143. Achilles400 says:

If this game is any indication, that couple “celebrating” their wedding will not be together very long.

  144. upstatemet says:

nice job Joe but sorry I can’t feel positive about this, first place team or not.

  145. DWright is King says:

you know what would really be interesting….the phils hit one of our guys in retaliation, the benches clear, pedro beats up charlie manuel, and then we come back and win this game.

  146. upstatemet says:

    That aboy Dave

  147. DWright is King says:

alright everyone, enjoy the rest of the day….i foresee us coming up from behind and winning….i gotta go clean my house and make dinner…my husband’s gonna be home any minute and I’ve been sitting on this couch for 3.5 hours! Later!!

  148. icedrake523 says:

Wright’s home run = whipped cream on crap

  149. upstatemet says:

as Popeye would say,”thats all I can stanz and I can’ts stanz no more”

I’ve got to go, so you guy’s enjoy the rest and will see you tomorrow.

  150. Krusty The Klown says:

pedros arm is going to fall off by october!

  151. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its nice to know that tomorrow in a somewhat “must win” game we have brian f****** lawrence in there throwing his 79-81 mph fastball. Its funny its like this team tries to out do itself in awful losses, there was the one to the padres which seemed unbeatable then they found a way in philly the next thursday which def seemed like it would def be the worst loss of the year, then they pull out this gem…i guess matt was right about the lead its just gonna keep getting close then widen then close then widen so hopefully he’ll be right about it widening this week

  152. metman1964 says:

I am totally soured and annoyed with this teams lack of intensity to win and to show the NL, they are the team to beat. As I have mentioned in earlier blogs this stems from Willie. He is awful and probably one of the worse motivators in sports. In sports, a head coach or manager have to know how to motivate and drive their team to a championship. He fails to protect his players with calls from the UMPS. He wants to create the same corporate image that Skankees portray. A great example is when Wright hit his 30th homer a while ago, they showed Willie. He just stood there and basically did nothing. He should have been the 1st one to great David and create excitement by celebrating a success of one of his players. He is blander then a plain piece of untoasted white bread.
So with this said and how upset I am with their performance, I want to make this message clear.
For the next 2 weeks I will be pulling for the Phils to win the NL East. The reason is true from what Jimmy Rollins said. They are the team to beat, their hitting is better and they have the drive and urgency to win. Their manager is a leader he is not afraid to protect his players. He shows emotion. Once the Mets( My Entire Team Sucks) go home after Sept30 will the Wilpons react then. Jeff and Fred need to open their eyes, stop worrying about Citi Field and say he Omar and Willie in 3 years you both failed to win the WS. We spent a ton of $$$ on players and you failed to make it happen. They should have never hired Willie, his ego was too big to go to the minors and learn to manage. Just because he was a coach, it does not justify his knowledge to lead and manage. Oh yeah I would not be surprise that they hired him to piss the Skankees off and because of him being a minority along with their GM. They need to eat their losses and find a new combination of GM and Manager to stimulate some excitement. I hereby vote for either Joe Giriadi or Gary Carter for Field Manager and as far as GM,bring back Bobby Valentine. SO LETS GO PHILS. IT WILL BE NICE FOR THEM TO WIN THE NL EAST, WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS HAPPEN ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON. SCREW YOU WILLIE, YOU SUCK

    • mastermet says:

      Please go away.

    • MetsMachine says:

I actually agree with you. I can’t stand Willie Randolph, his aweful managing, and his laid back attitude. He’s an aweful fit for this team….or any NL team for that matter.

The Mets are going nowhere in October anyway, so I’d rather see a epic collapse over the next 2 weeks.

That will spark major major changes…and hopefully Willie will be banished. I want Omar to stay, but he’s going to have to wake up, open the wallet, and buy some boppers, and some quality pen arms. Stop signing 45 yr old players too.

  153. Darth Hernandez says:

The new york stems have no guts. There is no reason to get emotionally invested in this ball club anymore. It hurts too freakin bad. I hope Willie gets bird flu.

  154. EastFallowfield says:

“We’ll get our chance to come back and take care of these guys,” Lo Duca said. “They’re dancing around the field now, but we’ll see what happens when the time comes.”</

  155. beltransmole says:

You gotta hand it to Williie for sticking to his guns and continuing to give Blowta opportunities. It’s obvious he’s just as good a pitcher without steroids. He has been a solid investment this year and was well worth the 50 game suspension we had to wait through. Let’s go ahead and re-up his contract TODAY!! Keep giving him chances Willie. He’ll keep proving he’s worthy of a spot in the bullpen again and again.

  156. stickguy says:

If the team as a whole hadn’t choked out this weekend he would have been able to.
