According to Adam Rubin's book, the purpose of the minor league awards is to pump up the value of b-level prospects.

Gomez has done nothing?? Did his catch at Yankee Stadium not make a difference??

I'm not saying he'll be an All Star in 2008, but let's not be an extremist on the other end, either.

Personally, I think you're going to see a small shift back towards speed and defense. With baseball cracking down on roids and rumors of blood tests for HGH, teams are going to have to rely on the old tried and true: pitching, defense, speed, and timely hitting.

Look at how Epstein has remade the Sox. He brought in Lugo, Drew, and Pedroia to go along with Crisp, Lowell, and Youkilis. None of those guys are mashers. Not to mention they have Ellsbury waiting in the wings.

Great point about the perspective lack of HR production, although I think Milledge will ultimately develop into a 25-30 HR threat, and perhaps a good five hole guy behind Beltran. In any case, Castillo wouldn't solve that problem, and it's unlikely that they'd find a slugging 2nd baseball (are there any beyond Utley and Cano?)... so, again, I'd be comfortable with a Gotay and A-Hern.

I still think we wasted Heilman. He has been good for the bullpen up until this up and down 2007; but as a starter we could have gotten significant value trading him. Young talented starters don't come around very often. When he was 25 there were plenty of teams willing to give us talent.

Here's some more - more obvious teams:

Angels: Casey Kotchman, Howie Kendrick, Jered Weaver

Dodgers: James Loney, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Jonathon Broxton, Chad Billingsly

Brewers: Braun, Fielder, Gallardo

Braves: Saltalamachia, Franceour, Matt Diaz, Brian McCann

In terms of Reyes and Wright, they have easily (outside of Fielder, Braun and Hanley Ramiriez) made the largest impact at the youngest age. But beyond that we are a whole lotta what if's.

I agree. He had a decent stretch, but has cooled off a bit. Given his total lack of pop, his age (32?), and the chronic knee issues, he is a disaster waiting to happen.

Maybe bring him back on a real short term deal, but not for a big money 3 year guarantee.

At this point, A hern might be almost as productive! And if Gotay can go on a crash course on defense ofver the winter, he could do the job, and add quite a bit of pop.

Depending on what happens next year, they could be ver light on power. If Alou does retire, do they play Gomez? Milledge, should hit for at least modest power, but that is 2 OFs that don't mash.

Add in 2B and C, and seeminly SS, you are only left with DW, Beltran, and sorta Delgado that are good for a HR on a regular basis.

Lots of speed though!

As much as Castillo has been a perfect fit for the team, I'd be inclined NOT to give him a big, multi-year contract and take our chances with Gotay and A-Hern.

So Ruben Gotay hits AAA pitching to a .256 tune and then gets called up and hits above .300. Hernandez is the opposite.

Go figure.

My point is that the mets aren't dismal, I never said they were great but Wright, Reyes, Heilman, Milledge, Gomez, Mulvey, Pelfrey, Humber, FMart, Carp and Guerra. they have a slightly above average system
