The Game
The first-place Mets (83–65) look to turn the page as they kick off a three-game series with the Nationals (66-83) at RFK Stadium this evening, starting at 7:05 pm EDT.
The Lineup
- SS Jose Reyes
- 2B Luis Castillo
- 3B David Wright
- CF Carlos Beltran
- LF Moises Alou
- 1B Shawn Green
- C Paul Lo Duca
- RF Lastings Milledge
- SP Brian Lawrence
The Pitchers
Brian Lawrence (1-2, 6.31 ERA) starts for the Mets. This is his first start since August 27th vs. the Phillies, when he was knocked around for five runs on 10 hits (including two homers) over 4.2 IP. He has allowed 18 runs on 37 hits in 25.2 IP as a Met.
Tim Redding (3-5, 3.42 ERA) takes the hill for the Nats. Redding left the game in the third inning of his last start vs. the Marlins after getting hit on elbow with a batted ball. He has allowed more than three runs in a start only twice this season (out of 12 total starts). In five career appearances vs. the Mets, Redding is 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA. He allowed just one run over six innings against the Mets back on July 28th.
The Notes
The Mets have won five straight games at RFK Stadium.
Shawn Green is 5-for-9 vs. Redding.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Moises Alou is the oldest player (41 years, 75 days) ever to have a 20-game hitting streak.
Wily Mo Pena is batting .287 with eight homers and 16 RBI in 26 games since joining the Nationals on August 18th.

…enjoy…and as always, let’s go mets…

Let’s keep the errors + walk total under seventeen tonight, and I think we can begin to forget about this last weekend…
lets go mets
I almost think Reyes should be disciplined and sat down today.
07champs, how about single digits (maybe too much to ask with b law on the mound)
Gentlemen this is the homestretch…..and a plethora of games vs aweful…I will repeat, aweful baseball teams.
It’s time to get into wrecking ball mode. I don’t care that Brian Lawrence is pitching tonight. The Mets looked like a single A team yesterday….pretty much all weekend. Time to step it up.
A few bloggers (who I can’t stand) on here, had the gaul and audacity to post comments after yesterdays game layering a sweet sweet layer of sugar over everything. A nicely glazed donut if you will. That my friend….is a blind, and stupid Mets fan. Ah yes…we’re in first, and we’ll be fine. You think Willie Randolph is rubbing off on them?!?
I’m by no means saying don’t support the team. I do…and I’ll be watching tonight. But after this weekends debacle we are ALL allowed to speak out and call it like it is….and that was an aweful and inexcusable weekend of baseball.
A few things I want to see:
NO goddamn errors.
No goddamn Mota in ANY spot. Let him sit in the dugout and pick up the gatorade cups. I wouldn’t let him pitch for my softball team. He’s a disgrace to the uniform.
And last but not least….some BLOW OUTS. Is that to much to ask for vs these amazing Nat pitchers? How bout a few laughers…so our pen can pitch with ease, and we can show our muscle.
Other good teams seem to do it often…why not the Mets?
Double digits tonight boys.
Brian Lawrence tonight. Not exactly stopper material. I hoped to have seen the last of him.
Tim Redding has a career ERA of 5. If the Mets can’t produce that amount of runs off him and get to their bullpen…..shame on them.
This game is on the bats, not Brian Lawrence.
They havn’t cracked more than 5 on the scoreboard in a week and a half. Yesterdays game doesn’t count…because I’ve deleted it from my memory.
What worried me is that we are playing bad teams. We can loose just as fast as we can win. Tonight we had a 4-0 lead and now we are tied. If we loose and the Phillies win it down to 3. We cant afford to let any game slip away from us. I just dont have th faith and confidence in this team to beleive we can do that, Im sorry. I hope we do, but, I have a nagging voice in th eback of my head thats waiting for the big game to get away as we slip out of first…..
Why is Lawrence starting and not Pelfrey or Humber? It’s a very simple question, and I want to know Willie’s answer. If the answer is anything other than “because I believe he gives us the best chance to win the game” then fire him. If the answer is “He gives us the best chance to win” fire him anyway, because that answer is false.
ENOUGH.
It’s because Pelfrey is pitching Wednesday and Humber has been more or less shut down for the year.
I agree with you. However, I’ve known Willie is a moron for a whlie now..so its not a shock.
I hope the Mets get the W, but I also hope Lawrence gets smashed. This way…it just furthers how truly dumb Willie Randolph is.
I want him gone ASAP….so the more things against him the better. He’s simply an aweful manager for the national league.
Willie Randolph wouldn’t argue a call if the ump insulted his family. It’s pathetic.
i’ve read your posts. you’re not in a position to call willie “dumb” or “moron.” to quote omar “you know what i’m saying”
beltran blast! bet you think he’s soft.
looks like willie motivated his 1st place boys tonight
If you think Willie Randolph is a good National League manager….well, I feel bad for you.
“it wasnt humbers day” lol willies a moron
Brian Lawrence on the mound for a bounceback game is a depressing thought. Almost as depressing as this past weekend.
The Yankees used Chamblerlain, Hughes and Kennedy. We bring up Humber and his only role is to follow Aaron Sele in blowouts.
Brian Lawrence is a total rag arm. Humber should have gotten this start.
It looks like the Mets have decided to try and bounce back.
Too bad we don’t face the Nats in the playoffs.
LETS GO METS! Willie better send Manny a Christmas card for putting Redding out there!
I just saw this on ESPN.com…the 100 players we love to hate… how is Benitez not on this list?
METS DIVISION
37. Doug Sisk, New York Mets: So hated that a fan once sent him a mock prescription for cyanide, “to be taken daily.”
38. Dave Kingman, New York Mets and everywhere else: Actually a pretty good hitter in his 16 seasons with the Giants, Mets, Padres, Angels, Yankees, Cubs, Mets (again) and A’s. But fans let him have it for every one of his 1,816 career strikeouts.
39. George Foster, New York Mets: Blamed for the Mets’ largesse after the team gave him a fat contract before the 1982 season, hoping to recapture his 52-homer form and ignoring his advancing age and falling numbers. His attitude didn’t help: Foster used to roll up to the stadium for games in a stretch limo.
40. Roger Cedeno, New York Mets: Reader Jon Harpula’s take on Cedeno: “A fat man’s Juan Pierre.”
41. Vince Coleman, New York Mets: So many reasons for hatred to choose from, but I’m going to go with this 1991 quote: “I don’t know nothing about no Jackie Robinson.” Actually Vince, that should be, “I don’t know anything about Jackie Robinson.” Please work on your grammar.
AP Photo
They’re not booing, they’re chanting … actually, yes, they’re booing.
42. Bobby Bonilla, New York Mets and other places: Wore earplugs to the plate to drown out the boos that greeted him for every at-bat.
43. Braden Looper, New York Mets: Blow late-inning leads, get booed in Queens.
44. Mel Rojas, New York Mets: Blow late-inning leads when you’re carrying extra poundage, and you get booed a lot in Queens.
45. Guillermo Mota, New York Mets: Blow late-inning leads even when you’re juicing, then return and post an ERA near six, and you might want to ask for a trade.
46. Kazuo Matsui, New York Mets: Expected to improve the Mets’ offense and shore up their defense, Matsui instead stank at all facets of the game. Bonus points for turning his career around now that he’s out of New York.
I take this back… Armando got voted into the Multi-Team Offender category.
what’s up everyone…Let’s Go Mets!!
Did anyone hear Keith Hernandez’s comment after Shawn Green’s homerun. “He was all over it like a rash.” Gotta love it.
During the stretch run it should be illegal for MLB.TV to show the “not in contention” broadcast. I miss SNY already!
I second that!! These nationals guys might as well be sleeping for all the energy they bring to this game.
Said it before, saying it again…Brian Lawrence is a total rag arm. This 4th inning is a classic example. The man stinks.
starting to miss their low energy commentary ..
Tie game - is anyone surprised?
not very. now with sele coming in, game is pretty much over. Go CARDS.
