In 2006 the Cardinals were in first place in the National League Central by seven games over the Reds with 12 games remaining. Over the those final 12 games, the Cardinals were 3-9 and ended up winning the division by 1.5 games.
The Tigers also struggled down the stretch last season, going 5-7 over there final 12 games to relinquish their lead in the American League Central to the Twins.
Even though they struggled down the stretch, both teams made the World Series last season.
…this is an important note, as even if the Mets do continue to struggle down the stretch, which i do not expect, there is a precedent to suggest that they can still be successful in the post-season, even the 2000 Yankees lost 15 of 18, including seven straight, to end the regular season…

The 07 Mets are not the 06 Tigers.
jim leyland, justin verlander, joel zumaya…..three things the mets do not have anything close to resembling.
Seriously brotha….AMEN.
Additionally, if the Mets continue to struggle down the stretch, there will be no postseason.
Matt, here you go again. I mean…COME ON MAN!
I love your blog, and I’m not going to get explicit here but it’s as if you dream this stuff up to help you sleep better at night!!
Now your going to compare the 2006 Cards and Tigers to what the Mets are doing? Those 86 win Cards of last year was a VERY RARE occurance. It won’t happen again the following year and the Tigers…HAHAHA….LOOK AT THEIR PITCHING STAFF!
They were a great team just playing poorly at the time. The Mets are the farthest thing from a great team. I dare you…DARE you to compare the Mets rotation and pen, to the Tigers of 2006.
ENOUGH ENOUGH ENOUGH with this optimistic spin applying it to past events. Its absurd. Here’s what you need to do.
Look in the mirror…tell yourself the Mets are an average team in a bad league. They are playing like crap right now. They have nobody to blame but themselves and there is no reason…no reason to believe they will improve, because their pitching is not that good.
Take what you can…enjoy it while it lasts.
It was Mike Nichols, not Matt.
I apologize. Mike Nichols. Either way…my point is valid.
Btw…nice username! I’m on board with you there.
Can we ditch the freaking black uni’s already?
while I am in no way saying this will happen again, you fail to compare us to last years cards. who did they have? suppan, larussa and wainwright? we have at least that much. going into last years postseason I ranked the tigers 7 and cards 8 out of the playoff teams. my point is you never know
right, but my point is….its a RARE RARE occurance.
Who knows when the last time thats happened….probably been 50 years. So no, theres no reason to put our chips in that theory.
It’s just a mental safety net for some of you fans.
They did have Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, and Chris Carpenter.
