…from what i can gather, Paul Lo Duca, and one other player, asked Willie Randolph for permission to conduct a team meeting, which occurred before batting practice today…willie and his coaches talked with the team in private for roughly five minutes, then left the room…at which point the players met alone, behind closed doors, for roughly a half hour…

God forbid Willie initiated the meeting…God forbid.
The guy sits in the dugout listless. Makes aweful in game decisions. Doesn’t yell, doesn’t congratulate players on milestones.
Doesn’t give genuine post game interviews.
What exactly does he do to “manage” this team?
Keep his players in a nice lil groove?
I hate to nitpick on grammar, but that is some awful spelling of the word awful.
Does it hurt so much to admit I’m right?
I know you have no comeback, because instead of responding you corrected a grammer mistake.
Real original. I don’t see that on this blog 472 times a night. Get captain creative over here a marketing job!
I’m as frustrated with the team, which includes Willie, as anyone else. And I was just trying to provide some constructive criticism since I’ve seen the word spelled incorrectly a few times over the past few days.
I’ll be sure to write Matt about a spell checker on Metsblog, so your not offended next time.
you’re.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself!
Hahaha. lol.
Technically, I don’t think spelling counts as grammar.
Not sure if it is too late, but it is great to see LoDuca take the initiative here…I can tell you I’d listen to what he has to say.
Players initiate players-only meetings. That’s how it works. And managers initiate meetings where the manager presides. That’s how it works. So of course Lo Duca and another player initiated the players-only meeting. Nothing unusual here..
I frankly am tired of the Willie bashers? You think you can do the job better, then go out there and work at it hard enough to become a major league manager. I am absolutely hating being a NY fan of any sport in this city. All you get is panicking and secondguessing after any loss, and then predicting the world after big wins.
A baseball season is very long. It has ups and down. People don’t want to see that and would rather complain all day and night. It’s like those people who boo players who don’t get the job done DURING his at bat or while he is pitching. Yeah, that’ll make him do better.
Watch home games in St Louis. That is how baseball fans should act.
Like SAINT LOUIS FANS?????? Oh my God…you dop realize this is New York….not the whitebread, boring, pressure-less midwest.
Yes like St Louis fans. Fans who support and cheer the team. Fans who don’t look to boo just for the sake of booing. Fans in NY just like to nitpick and bash and boo every single part of their teams because maybe it makes them feel like they are important or something.
The same fans who nitpick and boo, think they have THE RIGHT to cheer when the team win. Well, in my eyes, they do not. Those who stuck with and supported, do.
You have to love when someone calls you a name when they can’t make a point. Especially when they do it online because they know they would be knocked out if they said it in person.
Anyway, I”m not a Cards fan. I’m a Mets fan. I respect St Louis and it’s fans because they cheer and support their team through good and bad.
If the Mets end up in last place next year, see how much support they get. Empty other than corporate seats of course.
Teams lose games. They slump. Sorry if your life is over and you have to whine because the Mets lost. Get over it. Thanks.
He is a weak manager and does not prepare his team for a big series. He will blow this big lead and the Mets can go home for the winter and watch the Yankees agin on Fox with his old uniform on
dammit, i cant believe our manager took this long to initiate a players’ only meeting!!! Totally useless!!!
Why ask the question when you play for the team or you’re obviously in the dug out with them…
Mets are in deep trouble, I saw laughing in the dugout during the 9th I guess LaDuca is write in his coments. I think someone should wake Reyes up and tell him to start playing
If this is true, Willie is letting the players manage. Might as well save the money and fire him if this is going to be the case.
Well, based on the top of the 1st, they’d better have more meetings!!!
I won’t be satisfied until they reproduce the 1st inning 4 more times in this game.
Agreed. No more rolling over and dying.
And I don’t mean just tonight….till October.
In today’s Met telecast, Keith talked about Willie’s comments today. Willie said that even though he has this calm demeanor during the game, he is different with his players behind closed doors. Willie said that he is very emotional and direct with his players in private.
After all, what point is it to show-up your players in front of the media and the other players. This is one of the reasons why the team plays so hard for him.
Probably true. But it doesn’t matter. Some fans think Willie should emote for the benefit of them.
Metlosopher,
So says Willie…but the players are saying different.
Players? You mean the single anonymous quote?
I guess you mean “but a player is saying different.” I don’t think there has ever been a single major league manager who wasn’t criticized by at least 1 player.
Yeah, only they havent played hard all season, unless u call Reyes watching from the batters box as the first baseman catches a fair pop up playing hard, or continual mental errors that cost us games, obviously it isnt working, Willie just plays that whole I am smarter then you act and its getting old especially when every decision that he makes ends up burning him.
Maybe Paulie should manage this team- the players seem to respond to him.
Is there any doubt in your mind Paul LoDuca has more skills on how to manage a N.L team than Willie?
If LoDuca is managing in 10 years….I’d pick him up in a heartbeat. He’s the man.
Why would you wait 10 years? Are we really past the days of player-managers?
That’s craziness…! Wow, when the temperature in here gets like its been i typically abstain, but to suggest that Lo Duca have Willie’s job is the epitome of illogical thought that permeates this site.
Why not instead simply simply sign Lo Duca, keep Willie (who has been out of standing in his tenure as manager) and enjoy the unsung, undervalued, intangibles that define Paul Lo Duca a New York Met.
P.S. Lets not forget that Paul Lo Duca wants to be a Met, loves being a Met, and has stated that he would take a home town discount to do so. Believe me there are other teams that would love to have him behind the dish.
I was really more jesting than serious. Your point is taken though.
Man….what is up with Maine?
“Is there any doubt in your mind Paul LoDuca has more skills on how to manage a N.L team than Willie?
If LoDuca is managing in 10 years….I’d pick him up in a heartbeat. He’s the man”
No doubt whatsoever. I would LOVE to have Bobby V back in here. I loved that guy.
Gotta bring back Duke!
NYC, the chances of LoDuca coming back aren’t great and it has nothing to do with the past week. The FO is reportedly not too happy with him because of his Page Six escapades and outburst to the press earlier this year.
He’s also pretty old for a catcher. But if there’s really no one else, I can see him coming back.
1. I think he will give the Mets a discount, and 2. I can’t see anyone worth while on the open market. Pudge is old and will cost a ton. There is no one in the minors that is ready yet. And I know about the FO and their feelings, and even Omar sounded like it was a long shot about a month ago, but I still think he should.
Agreed on both counts. I even think Posada will be a bad signing this year because of his age. The Yankees will be forced to give him a lucrative multi-year contract that will likely turn out to be a dud by year 2.
LO DUCA IN 2008!
how about that maine man
I THINK I MAY KILL MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I THINK I MAY SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY KILL MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4-0,5-3,7-3, al GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we have to come back from behind the friggin NATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I don’t know about the rest of you, but I for one sure am glad they held that team meeting. Who knows how many more runs they would have given up tonight if the players had not come to a meeting of the mids?
Why we could be staring at a 20 run deficit if not for that meeting!
Hooray, meeting!
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
What is going on?????????????
Where am I???
You mean to tell me that you’re a Mets fan, and yet you’re not used to being disappointed?
No, it’s not “Bizarro World”. It’s “Welcome, you’re a Mets fan World”!
Nice to be a member, eh?
I HAVE TOTALLY GIVEN UP
I CAN NOT STAND WATCHING THIS TEAM PLAY BASEBALL ANYMORE..
RICK PETERSON HAS TO GO.. OUR PITCHING IS NON EXISTENT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No way, we just need Zambrano back and everything will be fixed in 10 minutes!!!
lol nah but seriously Peterson is a great pitching coach, we can’t hold this crazy choke against him.
Heres comes the bullpen gone HR jimenez 9-7 Nationals
In all honesty this season is going down quickly it might be better off we dont make the playoffs the pain of losing in the playoffs will be greater than not making it at all. Het Willie how about putting in a fresh arm maybe Humber I have seen enough of these other guys
HE WONT DO IT!!!!
HUMBER SHOULDVE STARTED YESTERDAY…
But no we get Brian ” Batting Cage” Lawrence..
Then wait, here comes the savior, the stopperr, JOhn “First Half” Maine..
This team is a real bad joke, I too hope we do not make the playoffs.. Put that in your pipe and smoke it cerrone
HERE COMES MOTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
woohoo, what we all wanted , a 10 run deficit!
Seriously, in all honesty, if this team SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY manages to actually MISS THE PLAYOFFS, does Minaya get the boot?
All I hear is Fire Willie, and Willie has to go. Well folks, they BOTH need to go if the unthinkable actually happens.
If Omar gets fired, I am turning in my Met pompoms. Look at this team on paper. Compared to last year, every single player, with the exception of maybe Wright, has been worse then last year. Every single one. Lo Duca, Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, all of them. It isnt Omars fault, but when a team plays horribly like this the Manager has to go. You cant blame Omar for lack of offseason moves because there were no moves to be made. He brought in Alou who has been great. Its not the personell, its just that the are all underachieving, but most of these guys are proven big leaguers. That blame falls on the manager.
Omar is one of the best talent evaluators that there is. It is very hard to find a good GM, which Omar is. It is extremely easy to find a manager to manage a good team. That is why it is amazing how badly Willie has managed to mess this season up.
if we back in the playoffs it will be an early exit — they wont just flip the switch
the bullpen is absolutely horrendous and where has the Maine Man gone?? El DUque injury doenst sound like he will be back either
Alou tight quad isnt a good thing either – he was out for two months in the beginning of the season maybe he can pitch in the bullpen
AND NOW WE WATCH THE METS GO 5 SCORELESS AGAINST THE AWESOME NATS BULLPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
And more great clutch MET news… EL QUEU OUT, ALOU PROBABLY OUT..
ALL I CAN SAY IS LETS GO PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey we always have the awesome Shawn Green!!!!
At least he has shown some heart. He has clearly made his case as the best 1B on this team.
Slowest…
Moving…
Magic…
Number…
Ever…
Im going to have to dust off my dave winfield padres jersey and watch some awesome 1am padres phillies playoff action!!!!
I wonder how long it will take Minaya to fire Randolph if the Mets fail to make the playoffs. They are playing without passion and lack any fundamental acuity. Also, a little imagination might have come in handy in the last few weeks – perhaps a BP role for Pelfrey, El Duque or Humber? Something different to ignite the club.
How bout how long it will take Wilpon to fire Minaya for doing next to nothing in an effort to improve this team from last season so that Randolph would at least have a roster capable of winning the division in this God-awful league?
I think that is the more appropriate question, no?
I dont disagree with you but I think there is enough talent on the roster.
This is such a horrible game…. its not even the 8th inning and all my yankee fan friends are texting me!!
Im SO EMBRASSED and i dont care what anyone says in HERE
this is bad!!
we dont deserve playoffs with this team!
look at us!!
take the damn magic number down. put it up when it gets to one game. at this point, it’s hard to get excited about them going to the playoffs. and don’t mention the cardinals last year. the only reason cardinals got to the world series is b/c this mets team made medicore pitches look like aces. face it, this team is very flawed. they had 6 good weeks at the beginning of the season and two good weeks about 7 days ago and that’s it. medicore to poor baseball and willie and omar have no one to blame themselves. trading every pitching relief pitcher and relief pitching prospect for nothing. relying on an ancient starting pitchers and untested starters. pathetic
David Wright MVP not this year fellas how about Matt Holliday
This game is over the only hope we have left if they somehow get hot at home next week.
and everyone knows there terrible at home better on the road
I knew this was coming after the phillie debacle in Philadelphia they bounced right back
something isnt clicking here the last sweep by the Phillies has this team mentally checked out it killed there confidence
The bullpen is horrendous Willie doesnt stick up for his players
and now there is no chemistry on this team.
You have a bunch of players that do not know there roles especially in the BP
or does BP stand for batting practice when our bullpen comes in???
I live in Philly. You wouldn’t believe all the crap I gotta deal with. I think I’m going to work out of the house tomorrow.
i also live in philly maybe we can get together and bring some met spirit to this town
and phillies smell blood 3 -3 fellas
Where can you go to watch the Mets play and not get harassed by Sillie fans?
Cerrone post the Philles magic number
Why are they doing this to me? C’mon Jeff Conine!!!!!! Please, make yourself an immortal Met.
Not sure never actually tried it
Maybe Champps KOP Lets GO Gotay end this nonsense BS mosing streak
CRAP! S**T!
Man, looks like were goin home come october. This sucks. This team sucks they have no heart. Reyes sucks he has taken steps back into 2005 since the all star break. He looks so awful its almost embarrasing. Good job by Maine way to show your team that you deserve a postseason spot, even though we probably wont even make the post season. We have no heart. I am 19, have been watching the Mets since 94 and this is by far the most disapointed I have ever been during a season. I have never seen a bigger bunch of underachieveing over paid guys on any team that I have ever been a fan of. If missing the playoffs means Willie will be fired then maybe it is worth it.
Funny how Reyes’ demise just happened to coincided with the return of Ricky Henderson. All he seems to care about is stealing bases. Someone needs to tell him that you actually have to get on base before you can steal one.
Nicely put nrmax88
Now you are going to be banned for life from metblog and hotfootblog, because they are all a bunch pf optimistic smiley faces that cant see that this team, this manager, this GM, this PITCHING COACH is JUST NOT WORKING..
THIS TEAM SHOULD BE 20 GAMES UP RIGHT NOW, NOT 1.5!
Must have been a lot said in that big 5 minutes! Did he forget to include the pitching staff in that meeting?
By the way take down the Magic number it’s bad luck!
So what exactly went on in this closed-door meeting? Did they discuss how to play an exact carbon copy of last night’s game? Let the young kids play. If the regulars are going to roll over and die then let some of these younger guys (the one’s we kept around in lieu of bullpen help) play the rest of the season. At least they’ll try.
Exactly, I would rather watch prospects come up and get smoked but play hard then this bunch of underachievers give back 5 games in 5 days to the phillies for the second time in 3 WEEKS.
