The Game

The first-place Mets (83–66) make an attempt to act like it when they take on the Nationals (67-83) at RFK Stadium this evening, starting at 7:05 pm EDT.

The Lineup

The Pitchers

John Maine (14-9, 3.72 ERA) tries to the be the stopper for the Mets. Maine was strong in his last start vs. the Braves, allowing one run on three hits over six innings while striking out five and walking three. In two starts against the Nationals this season, Maine is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a single run in 12 innings against the Nats this season.

Joel Hanrahan (4-3, 5.83 ERA) pitches for the Nats. He was hit hard in his last start vs. Marlins, allowing three runs on six hits over 3.1 IP, walking six and striking out five. He has allowed 18 runs over his last four starts. Hanrahan has walked 31 batters in 41.2 IP this season. In his major league debut vs. the Mets on July 28th, Hanrahan allowed three runs on four hits over six innings while striking out seven.

The Notes

The Mets have made 10 errors in the last two games.

Jose Reyes has only three RBI in his last 29 games.

Moises Alou, who went 2-for-4 last night, carries a 21-game hitting streak into tonight’s game.

The Nationals bullpen has pitched 11.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

Please win!!!!!!!!

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 6:33 pm

why did the cardinals have to make that great comeback and then lose instead of just getting blown out or coming back all the way..it broke my heart a little bit more

DWright is King September 18, 2007 at 6:35 pm

anybody else think that magic number should come off the site for a couple of days…I think it’s bad luck…

Jay September 18, 2007 at 6:48 pm

Yes seriously, this is obviously going to come to the end of the season so having a magic number is a bit silly.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 6:35 pm

does anyone else wish Matt hadn’t mentioned that Maine hasnt given up a run to the nats in his 12IP against them?

D.J. Short September 18, 2007 at 6:53 pm

I don’t believe in jinxes. Just giving you the facts.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 6:43 pm

LETS GO METS!

You beat me to it but my setiments exactly! that is the best post of the week!

MetalMet September 18, 2007 at 6:44 pm

How about a break out game for Endy?

4dykstra4 September 18, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Let’s Go Mets! Let’s Go Mets! Let’s Go Mets!

MetsSox September 18, 2007 at 6:46 pm

I think this goes w/o saying that this is one of the biggest games of the year…METS HAVE TO WIN TONIGHT! Have to…and I just hate everything about the Cardinals…
last year, plenty of titles, their alcoholic manager, albert “the complainer” pujols, last year, looper,HGH,last year, 83 wins, fans are extremely quiet during games, wainwright, and then last night…down 11 runs and you cant complete the comeback! come on CARDINALS!
Only good thing they ever do was not show up for the 2004 World Series. GO GET EM MAINE! LETS GET THINGS GOING TONIGHT!!!!!

4dykstra4 September 18, 2007 at 6:55 pm

You forgot Spezio’s soul patch….THE MOST annoying thing about last years Cards team

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Dude, they’ve been annoying me as far back as Tommy Herr, and Ozzie Smith, and Jack Clark.

DWright is King September 18, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Ok guys..tonight is the beginning…the beginning of the Metropolitans’ road to victory!!!

DWright is King September 18, 2007 at 6:50 pm

besides, all these guys needed to do was pop in the video from last night’s game and the previous night and I’m sure they will never ever repeat mistakes like that!

SpitBall September 18, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Tonight is the night we start clicking on all cilinders again. I just feel it!

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 6:56 pm

i hope the little leaguers dont come to play today. these past 2 games have been disgusting to watch and they should be embarrassed but i think they’ll turn it around tonight.

lets go mets

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 7:04 pm

“Tonight is the night we start clicking on all cilinders again. I just feel it!”

Here’s the problem. Im getting the sense some of you are ready to party like its 1999 if the Mets win this game.

It’s the freakin Nationals. They should win by 15 runs. And the damage has already been done. This bullpen is NOT turning it around this season. They havn’t for 4 months. It’s just not that good. So the Mets may score some runs, and take some W’s.
But lets keep something in perspective, they are still streaky, their bullpen still stinks, and this is a team they should dumptruck.

I think the team will make the post season, but some of you need to lower the expectations bar a little bit. Your acting as if the Mets are the Anaheim Angels, who are just slumping.

This is who the Mets are…..MEDICORE.

SodaPopinski September 18, 2007 at 7:17 pm

alright dude, we get it…you come on here every single night and say the same stuff…give it a rest for crying out loud

everyone knows the bullpen blows…we’ve pulled our hair out over it for months now. time to just let it play out…i may not always like what i see, but i’ll be cheering no matter what

if you’re so obsessed with how bad this team is, then don’t watch…either way, just quit yer bitching

LETS GO METS!

cb32 September 18, 2007 at 7:18 pm

Well they are the best mediocre team in the NL East by 2.5 games still.

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Wyoming Met September 18, 2007 at 7:05 pm

Lets go Mets, that is all I can say.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 7:06 pm

Enough with “believing” and “hoping” and “crossing fingers” (I mean, even though that’s all we as fans can really do.) This thread seems like it was written by a bunch of Cub fans. Time to man up and play good baseball. If they can’t do that, they don’t deserve to win. I believe they can.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Good start. Keep it going. The pen will need at least 8-10 runs to preserve the win.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Who would have thought that Maine would be up hitting before he has thrown a single pitch?

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Great start!

Lets go Maine!

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Not a bad start. No complacency, though. Same approach every inning.

Wyoming Met September 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Awesome start. Now, lets keep it and kick the crap out of the Nats. And, also, I hope Hamels goes 1 2/3 and gives up 5-7 runs.

Luckbox September 18, 2007 at 7:28 pm

The Nats have the Mets just where they want them… 4-0.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 7:30 pm

Another chance to pummel them. . . .

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 7:36 pm

nows the test of whether or not the meeting worked bc they got to 4-0 yesterday lets see how they react to it this time.

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 7:38 pm

Man, what is up with the Nats broadcast. I mean, yeah sure, the announcers are bad, but the production of the broadcast is horrible. They drown out all of the crowd noise and sounds on the field, so when the announcers are talking its just silence. Really irritating. I think I’ll just put on the radio broadcast and work on my Pro Evo Soccer team.

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 7:38 pm

*when the announcers aren’t talking that is.

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 7:42 pm

I have a great idea. If any Mets are in the HR Derby next year….we can call back rag arm Lawrence to pitch.

I gaurantee you we shatter the record.

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Come on Maine let’s not give it backl

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 7:45 pm

this is a very familiar scenario. im not sure that i can watch the scoreboard or the rest of the game cause of fear that i may get so upset that i may launch my laptop.. i just know that Maine or the bully is going to give back this #$$%$ lead….

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 7:47 pm

We need to keep tacking on runs like Paulie said

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Ok then, bye.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 7:45 pm

That’s the Maine we know! Time for more runs boys!

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 7:49 pm

I thought Green said that he was going to stop hitting for power.

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 7:52 pm

That’s gonna leave a nice black and blue tomorrow

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Does anyone remember who it was the stole 2nd last night when it was 10-4…right before their 2 run HR?

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Nook Logan

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Yeah I thought there was an unwritten rule about that….

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:04 pm

I thought so too. Unless 6 runs up is acceptable.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Well after that triple it might be best to just give him the ‘ol one pitch intentional walk next time around

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Hope they save some of this offense tomorrow for Pelfrey.

mrosey September 18, 2007 at 8:05 pm

“Save offense?” That worked well last night. No mercy, every game. They need to make like King Leonidas in 300

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Yeah, nevermind. Bad idea.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Let’s go Jose, start us off by putting the pressure right back on.

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:08 pm

Wow, i didnt think there was any way he’d get Jose on that ground ball…

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:09 pm

Was Jose running? He never gets caught like that.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm

he was, i think b/c he was batting righty is why he was out

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Come on Johnnie get out of this with a low pitch count

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm

They don’t hit this guy very well. They make this guy into Cy Young

Wyoming Met September 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Can the Nats announcers be any more bias? Never heard such homers in my life

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Seriously, these guys are unbelievable homers… they don’t stop all game long….i thought that it was just me.

D.J. Short September 18, 2007 at 8:14 pm

You aren’t alone. The Nats can do no wrong according to them. I’ve never heard them be critical of the team, and I watch a lot of Nats telecasts, sadly.

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Wright is the man… That’s it David.. Always hustling!

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm

David with extreme hustle

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Lets just not see the same old script. Get all the runs early, then shut the offense down.

Of course, if you get into the pen by the 4th inning, and the worst team in the league for scoring runs has to get at lesat 6, you don’t deserve to be in the playoffs if they beat you.

Now, get the runs flowing. Double digits tonight and tomorrow!

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Is it just me or is Ronnie Belliard really annoying?

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm

yes he is

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:19 pm

WILL SOMEONE TELL THE NATS ANNOUNCERS TO SHUT UP.. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:30 pm

wat r they saying?

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:21 pm

COME ON JOHNNY… DON’T ##$ AROUND WITH 2 OUTS….

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Maines killing me. Looks like he wants to keep them in the game, and make sure he burns out early so they have to get into the en.

He needs a couple of quick, 1-2-3 innings with a low pitch count to get through 7. Take one for the team!

And how often do they get the first 2 outs, then end up giving up runs? Way too common it seems. WOnder if any of the stat wonks can track that?

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Maines getting annoying too

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:22 pm

WHAT IS UP WITH THIS GUY? HE TENDS TO LET UP WHEN HE HAS 2 OUTS… HE LOSES FOCUS…

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Here we go again.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:23 pm

What is it with these pitchers and two outs? They can’t get anybody out in those situations. That is on Peterson. We are screwed again. You can see it coming.

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm

HOLY COW THAT STAYED IN!!!

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm

This is pathetic. They are going to be into the pen by the 5th again, and we know how that goes. At least 10 runs tonight for the nats.

2 outs, no one on, and they end up with runs.

Ridiculous. None of these guys can seal the deal. Just power over them. Blow some stirkes by.

Is it Peterson that encourages the endless nibbling?

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Thank god.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Out of the inning but at what expense, another run, 20+ pitches…guys gotta be getting nervous again

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:29 pm

my girlfriend won’t even talk to me when i have the Mets game on. i think that she needs to go into therapy after this season

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Maine’s gotta just throw strikes. There is absolutely no reason to walk Robert Freaking Fick.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Really these walks are getting just plain silly…let them hit it the damn thing, but then again we haven’t played much defense to encourage that type of thinking

miker94 September 18, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Are you kidding me, another 2 out and no one on base meltdown? Come on already, just one more out and we’re out of the inning, and we give up a hit, a walk and another hit, then almost a homerun to some f_ ing kid. Goddamnit already, enough is enough! We BETTER get some more runs here, cuz you KNOW damn well that our pen will blow it for sure!

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:28 pm

but it could be worse, look what the Cards are doing

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:28 pm

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Man, gameday showed that red dot way over the fence! I assume Moises brought it back?

But look at the bright side. They made it through 4 innings without an error!

Phillies are winning again, but that is subject to change.

Once thing from yesterday. Manual took the top 3 guys in the pen and shut them down for the day (so did WIllie, but not for the same reason!). Almost cost them, but they got the win, and the suposed good guys got a break.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Alou didn’t look like he was hurting too bad. He walked off no problem and didn’t seem like he was in pain. Probably just a precaution.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm

7-3

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm

boy if hes out Endy and Lastings will play much more. Remember Alou was never around in the post

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:35 pm

I cant remember his name, but last night someone made fun of me on here for using the word Politics associating it with baseball.

He made a war comment…as if politics only apply in that arena.
Yeesh…somebody missed some PolySci classes.

Anyway, based on Greens contact the last few weeks, and his MUCH improved 1st base defense…..here is POLITICS IN ACTION, with the Mets.

He keeps this up…he’s earned the spot at 1st. He makes more contact than Delgado, and is a better fielder….which gives the Mets a better chance to win. Isn’t that what its all about?

But you know Delgado will be slotted right in that 5 spot, creating the blackhole we all know and love.

Green starts at 1st come playoffs. Not Delgado.

Teufel Shuffle September 18, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Do you ever have anything positive to say?

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm

That was positive. Green is playing well. He should start at 1st. ….????

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:37 pm

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm

newport beach mets fan September 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 8:42 pm

we already tried a day off and it didnt help. i dont think it will do good. he needs to go back to the basics and get a level swing back

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:43 pm

He had 2 days off a week ago. It has nothing to do with days off. Again…here goes the mets fan attributing crap play to days off.

Reyes just isn’t that great. He’s good, but he’s no Rollins.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Shut it!

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Why because I’m right?

REYES ISN’T AS GOOD AS ROLLINS.

Accept. Go look at the numbers you blind blind fan.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:48 pm

I told you this last night…I’d rather be blind than dumb my friend. Don’t you have a Phillies game to be watching?

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:50 pm

How is saying Rollins better than Reyes dumb?

That’s a fact. It’s reality. 2 things…you havn’t got a grasp on.

Well, were lucky the ump blew that strike 3 call on Zimmerman. Maine’s gotta settle down here.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:49 pm

maine and perez are too inconsistent to ever be considered aces. but i’d still love them to be 3-4 for the rotation for years to come

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I see what u mean but they are also both pretty young in the grand scheme of things. This year? Yea I’d say their 3 and 4 guys but I think with thier talent they can be great 2 starters in a year or two.

Lets see how you guys can blame this inning on willie…

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Who is blaming Willie? I see Maine getting the heat. When Willie brings in Mota to totally give up, then he will get it.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm

nobody is yet but people will soon.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

He gets the blame for the crappy team attitude and clueless in game strategy. Can’t blame him for Maine choking.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Who is blaming willie? Just read down from here and youll see a ton of them.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:51 pm

The Mutts will be losing before the 6th.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:51 pm

oh boy…..

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:51 pm

5 runs vs the Nationals. This pitching staff top to bottom is GAAAAAAAAAAARBAGE.

Can you imagine these guys pitching against AL big boppers?

Talk about a bloodbath.

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Oye vey – does this crap every end????

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Double play. Please.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

This game is killing me.

Get someone up in the pen, jesus.

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Unbelievable, oh wait a minute totally believable. One way or another something will fail and tonight it’s the starting pitching. Another loss.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm

It’s almost funny

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Nice job John Maine.

I dare someone to tell me Im negative and out of line.

Cmon Navy mets…..are you happy now?

THIS TEAM HAS LET UP 20 RUNS IN LESS THAN 2 GAMES TO THE NATIONALS……PATHETIC.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

The question should be are you happy now? Because for whatever reason you seem kina proud of yourself for whatever reason.

beltran and the mets September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Thank You. So happy somebody beat me to the punch.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm

I shoulda proofread that. My bad

metsftw September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

you’re negative and out of line, yankee fan.

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Kill me.

Why was Maine not pulled?

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Belliard! There’s the dagger. The season is officially over. I want to puke.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

wow

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

that is disgusting. absolutely pitiful. we do NOT deserve to be in the playoffs if we are gonna play like this

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

John Maine sucks.

Game is not over. MAN UP.

Steve.P September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

HOLY $H!T! WHY WHY WHY WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Wheels are off….

I hope we lose. Gut the entire team this winter.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

“I hope we lose.”

wtf dude? I mean are you stupid. I understand not believeing in the team but hoping we lose… I just dont get it.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Drill somebody or something. This is ridiculous.

letsgomets31 September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

I’ve seen this movie one 2 many times…

gipper913 September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

This is out of hand.

BYE Willie!!! Good riddance!

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:54 pm

I mean, I know the pen has looked like crap lately but some of that has been because of the d.

beltran and the mets September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Incredible

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

this is sorta funny, not really but kinda

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

haha its funny, you can laugh.

Just think about the Nationals as the worst offensive team in the bigs crushing the Mets….20 runs and counting.

Then think of the Phils pitching…..worst in the bigs, and the Mets can’t touch them.

Mets arent a playoff team. Theyre just in this thing, bc the league is trash.

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

A little late there Willie.

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

What a disaster. The bottom is literally falling out. No way to put a rosey spin on this.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 8:55 pm

This dumbass Nats’ announcer is making me ill with his homer antics. . . . What an amateurish buffoon.

That said, the Mets are giving him plenty to yak about.

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

A comeback win here would do wonders. Schoeneweis needs to keep this within 1.

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:57 pm

True.

Thank god the offense has been good tonight, hopefully they come back and respond after this.

letsgomets31 September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Speechless!

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

wow im completely speechless, its not even worth saying anything we cant do anything right we probably couldnt beat a hs team right now

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

why wouldnt willie give him the hook especially when he started to lose concentration last inning. has he not watched when maine pitches this year? he can be great for 4-5 innings and then just let it all go…shouldnt willie be aware of that?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Seen the bullpen recently?

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

i have but i mean cmon….u cant leave maine in there. he does this nearly every single time he pitches.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

And then he goes to the bullpen and you blame him for bringing a reliever in who has like a 75% chance of doing the same thing.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

all i know is the nats better hit like this against the phils

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Teams with nothing to play for can always be dangerous, a lot easier for them to relax and play. Hopefully Acta manages like this against the Phils too.

Steve.P September 18, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback! Comeback!

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Take the magic number down, Matt. If they don’t win this one, we can officially pack it in.

ChiliGTC September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

agreed….take down the magic number. this team makes me sick. Matt was talking earlier about why he likes baseball b/c of the emotions involved, but you know what, the Mets consistently dissappoint…what a joke!

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 8:57 pm

And now they are playing everyone’s favorite song….

Sweet Caroline.

uugh

WrightMVP September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Thanks for clutching it up John Maine, you freakin bum!

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Ok, I really might be in the dark but what is the significance of that song in all the ball parks????

beltran and the mets September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Is there anyway to purge the yankee fans from this site. Jeez, you are pathetic.

beltran and the mets September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

obviously meant for YankeesMachine

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

I’m glad someone finally asked that question. Is there?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

That’s right, a “real” Mets’ fan knows that this team is PLAYING GREAT!!!!! Go team!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

This is an abomination, and Met fans shouldn’t stand for it.

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Maine doesnt look like an Allstar anymore…………….stick a fork in him

letsgomets31 September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Here comes 3 more runs..11-7 Nats

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Guys, this is tough competition. We can scratch back at this.

I know were underdogs but we can do it!

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

COME ON DUDES LETS GO METS LETS GO METS YA GOTTA BELIEVE! next inning castillo will geta single, then wright hits a double 1 run scores, beltran rips a hr 2 runs score, milledge gets an infield single THEN BOOOM WE GONAN WIN!

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

No doubt about it, there will be a fight tonight

gipper913 September 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Can it please be Paulie decking a pitcher and/or Willie?

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Did I say it would take at least 9? Looks like I am off. Maybe 13?

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Oh my God, double plays do exist!

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Maine sucks, but you wait until he gives up 8? Even Manny Acta with nothing to play for went to his ‘pen after his starter gave up 3. This is AWFUL!!! Thank you Luis Castillo. How sad is it that Schoeneweis is the anchor of this pen.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Thats because Hanrahan sucks. Maine has shown in the past that he is a good pitcher and If willie took him out after he gave up 3 runs everyone would be yelling at him for going to the bullpen way too early and not sticking with our starter.

I mean, am I wrong?

Darth Hernandez September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Holy Baby Jesus,, wtf just happened

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

This is an important inning. Cannot go out 1-2-3 here.

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:00 pm

We still liking Willie? Jesus. This is ridiculous.

mets227 September 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Did Willie make the pitch to Belliard?

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Somehow this team still can’t get up for a game against the Nats. The Mets have given up 30 runs in 3 games and will ultimately lose the division. For that I blame the manager. The pitch to Belliard was just the tip of the iceberg.

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Welcome back Beltransmole. That name is still cracking me up !!!!!

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

look if we go back and score this inning the momentum comes back, its 1 freakin run we got 7 so far lets go offense, pitching aint gonna win for us

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

There will be no comeback. I’ve stopped being positive too long ago. This offense will now shut right down.

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

30 runs and counting that the Mets staff has let up in less than 3 games.

Maybe accusable with the Phils….certainly not the Nats.

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm

*excusable.

gipper913 September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

I just threw up in my mouth. No BS.

Willie “Brains” Randolph must go.

metties September 18, 2007 at 9:01 pm

its only the 5th inning and the bats are doing fine, that being said why can we not put humber in here at nothing less than to see him for more than the 3 innings he has put in so far since being up and to give the rest of the miserable pen a few more innings off so this way maybe we can get a lead back so they dont jsut blow the game all together this early?? i mean why is humber not even a choice right now

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm

because hes not one of willies guys.

Willie let Maine implode and blow a 7-3 lead.

its the friggin washington nationals! how can maine not get out of that. . .man you are blaming willie for that!? i mean come on!

icedrake523 September 18, 2007 at 9:03 pm

If any team would be the first to be 7 games up in the division with 17 left to play and end up losing the division and missing the playoffs, it’d be this team.

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Come on David put this team on your shoulders

Steve.P September 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm

I dislike some of Willie’s moves as the next foaming-at-the-mouth fan, but this implosion is on Maine and Jacket: he came to the mound, obviously questioned John, and allowed him to proceed…

We can make a comeback, though.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm

It’s on Maine. Obviously, what he did against Hudson was a fluke. We needed him to be a stopper again, and he left a smoldering pile on the mound, instead.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:05 pm

come on CB!

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Beltran is clutch

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm

o yeah and mr wright is real clutch himself there

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm

At least Wright put the bat on the ball. That should merit him the captain’s “C” on this team.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:13 pm

what the hell is the difference between a fly out and a strike out in that situation?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Are you watching, or just following on Gameday? He crushed that ball. Hit it right at Kearns.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm

im watching…but isnt an out and out? i still dont see how a hard hit ball…for an out…is any more clutch than a strikeout. if there were someone on base…it would be different, but no one was on…he was probably trying for a homerun to get a run back, and who can blame him? if he makes contact there its gone, it just so happens that he missed it

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Sarcasm.

metties September 18, 2007 at 9:10 pm

offense needs atleast 8 more runs… pen will allow 6 no doubt.. who will it be from the pen that allows a big inning this game?

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Mets will be shut out for the rest of this game. I wish it wasn’t the case, but this team is destined to choke.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:10 pm

He has actually been very clutch in the first two games of this series and he almost jumpstarted a huge rally with that 3 run homer in that final game vs the phillies.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Is that after he struck out with the bases loaded to end an inning in the previous game? Yeah, I guess it was.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:17 pm

whatever…hes come up clutch in situations and he hasnt….but what the hell does him striking out and wright flying out have anything to do with beltran not being clutch and wright being more clutch then him because he made contact. who, would u say, on this time is clutch?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

It doesn’t. NO ONE has been clutch tonight.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

“Is that after he struck out with the bases loaded to end an inning in the previous game? Yeah, I guess it was.”

Do you live in your own negative fantasy world? First of all, there were two on and two out in the bottom on the ninth. Second of all he made contact and missed the sweet spot by like a centimiter and flew out to end the game.

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Who wants to bet that St. Louis blows the game?

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm

WrightMVP September 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm

This is absolutely GROSS. The only thing that I believe in right now is that the mets are going to be watching the playoffs. They sure are doing a wonderful job handing it over to the phillies!

Nightlife September 18, 2007 at 9:09 pm

We can take some solace that Hamels is probably going to be out of the game by the 4th and the Cards are up 3-1 now.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm

no we cant. we cant be worried about the phils right now. we need to worry about the mets. the phils are going to do what they are going to do, if the mets continue to play like this it wont matter. any bets that the braves get back in the race? lol just playing…. right?

Well the only thing left to do is plunk Belliard when he gets up again. I mean you have to right?

ChiliGTC September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

old time baseball, yes you plunk Belliard. Today, they won’t let you do it…

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm

…because I slit my wrists.

metties September 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm

oh god here it is everyone if u dont already think the game is over just take notice to who is coming in…thats right u see it right its mota, not to be mistaken by humber..actually has anyone seen humber he is on the team right??

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm

OK, folks. This is not good for my blood pressure or sanity. I’m just going to pretend the season starts tomorrow, and we’re not on the cusp of a historic choke job. No more negativity. It’s only stating the obvious.

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Buddy, we’re not on the “cusp of a historic choke job”…we’re smack in the middle of it.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm

We’ll have plenty of time to discuss when a joke job begins, ends, or hits its apogee when the Phillies are opening up the NLDS.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm

That’s “choke,” not “joke.” Well, really it’s both. . . .

jimyager September 18, 2007 at 9:54 pm

stick a fork in us we are done!!! WTF !!! The big meeting really helped alot. IF we get to the playoffs and thats a big IF how far can we get if we cant beat a last place team like the Nats? METS SUCK, METS SUCK, METS SUCK. Sweept by the Phillies and sweept by the Nats,( we will be when Pelfry blows it again) game over. I wish I could say it was a good season. See ya next year.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Well, the refund on the NLCS tickets will help pay for some nice X-Mas gifts.

Steve.P September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I’m looking forward to spring training and all the trades Omar makes. He’ll have a ton of pressure to spend some coin on arms and outfielders.

ChiliGTC September 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Mets don’t refund money….they just apply money less service charge to 2008 tickets….at this rate, Mets may not win again!

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm

i have jokingly called this team the Mañana Mets cuz of the prevailing attitude that willie inspires

they should have been playing like there is no tomorrow for months now

instead we get willie’s yankee entitlement attitude

and we see where that has gotten the yanks since 2000

coreynyc September 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm

It’s all good, here comes Mota.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm

hahahah “your season has gone” hahahah someone definitely needs to make a sign of that and bring it to the next home game hahah i guarantee it gets on sny lol

Raisin316 September 18, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Willie has the…someone just stole my smile look..Oh wait…he has the personality of a baseball.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Here’s comes Mota… this is like a horror B-movie. We all know what is gonna happen, it has a boring plot, but we all have to watch.

gomets6091 September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

They’ve given up at least a run in 4 consecutive innings each of the last 3 games, and have given up runs in 5 consecutive innings tonight and 2 nights ago. Each of those games included at least one 4-run inning, with tonights and 2 nights ago including a 5 run innings, and last night involving two 4-run innings. Their offense hasn’t been great, but the blame for this recent stretch lies primarily with the pitching staff: both starters and relievers. Ironically, in the beginning of the season, everyone said it was gonna be the pitching that would torpedo the Mets season…maybe they were right, it just didn’t manifest till 145 games into the season.

Oh well, still gotta believe. Phils are losing, and the Mets can still easily come back and win this thing. Just gotta go out and do it.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

How far will Zimmerman hit this one?

Raisin316 September 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Time to just hit someone and brawl.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

At least Show is pissed. About time somebody is

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I just gained respect for Schoe for throwing that glove. At least he cares. He sucks, but he cares.

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

We blew not ONE not TWO but THREE 4 run leads

Raisin316 September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Its time for Delgado to man up and get back in the lineup.

WrightMVP September 18, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Are you that clueless Willie. WTF is wrong with you!

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm

look for no alou, delgado (obv) and a start from pelfrey tomorow, cuz ya know its just another game

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm

the parade of trusted vets just keeps on coming out of the bullpen

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm

I really hate how this team shows no heart whatsoever. When they blow a lead they just roll over and die…nothing more, nothing less. It’s incredibly boring to watch.

This is the main difference between this season and last: when last year’s team was down by two runs, I felt like they could come back. This season…not so much.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm

you know who i feel bad for, gary cohen, poor guy loves the mets just as much if not more than anyone of us and not only has to watch every second of this garbage but he has to hold in any cursing screaming or violent actions as a result of these games

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm

Good point. I would love to hear the commentary during commercials.

Jay September 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm

are we having fun yet?

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Talk about a train wreck. A week ago, this was a well poiled winning machine, and now I don’t think they will win another game all year! Has any team ever finished a season 0-18?

I have no way to check, but I bet the Nats have already set a season high in runs for a 3 game series this year. And there is still another 1.3 games to go!

What a debacle, but this is on Maine, even though maybe they should have had a quicker hook.

One thing about Willie, he does everything he can to get them trhough 5 so they can be in line for a win!

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:27 pm

I know you’re pissed, but let’s be serious for a minute. Willie could have pulled Maine for…. who?

metties September 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm

i can not wait for the postgame

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm

That’s funny, because I just can’t wait for the game to be over.

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 9:25 pm

this is why i was panicking back during the first phillies series

the mets NEEDED to pull away

cuz who is surprised that alou, delgado and hernandez are down late in the season

if we played like we should have back then

they could be intentionally resting by now

Darth Hernandez September 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm

I’m positive I saw a shot of Lo Duca looking into the dugout for signs. Ever since that they cut real quick to the pitcher after the pitch has been delivered. Thats sort of a big deal right? Paul no calling the game. Willie taking that away from him…

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:26 pm

id love nothing better than for lo duca to kick the crap outta this pitcher next ab

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:27 pm

2-0 fastball low and down the middle right where green loves it and down by 2 runs with the offense going silent and he just takes the pitch

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:27 pm

what post season are gary and kieth talking about el duque pitching in?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Rumor has it Omar wants to bring in Pudge Rodriguez next year. . . .

. . . if Omar offers him a contract, Omar should be fired. We’ve seen where the over-the-hill gang gets us.

kendychavez September 18, 2007 at 9:31 pm

who said that? i’ve been on the fence with omar this year, but if he goes after pudge he really does have to go. the last thing we need is another guy that can’t walk to save his life. might as well keep lo duca

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Some Si.com guy. Probably means nothing. . . . I hope. . . .

Hellbelly September 18, 2007 at 9:28 pm

You know what bothers me about the Maine start (aside from the obvious impact on the pennant race)?

It screws up my Reyes & Maine for Santana trade. Minny might not want either of these guys.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Why would Minny ever do that? You would be hard pressed to get Santana for Reyes, Humber and Pelfrey. The Mets think way more highly of their minor leaguers than anyone else does.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:29 pm

where o where has pedros swagger gone? he needs to leave for a day and then come back so the players can get excited again

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:30 pm

hahaha… everything else sucks, but this comment was at least funny.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:30 pm

did you hear that? nationals going to the 6th pitcher of the night and we are losing

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:31 pm

u hear that? its an endy chavez game tying 2 run homer!

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 9:31 pm

what willie and the mets don’t seem to get

the idea is not just to accentuate the positive

you GOT to ELIMINATE the negative

and the mets, from omar, to the scouts, to willie, to the jacket and finally to the players do not seem to have done anything different to fix their problems

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:31 pm

matt, please take the magic number down

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Do it now. Ever since the number went on we totally suck.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm

WHAT THE HELL HAS JEFF CONINE DONE TO DESERVE AN AB!

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

He’s a veteran and he’s put in his time. It’s the Willie way.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Which obviously WORKS WONDERS!!! Someone get Rickey Henderson a bat.

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Conine? Ugh. Automatic out.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm

the reason the nats have 6 pitchers in the game is bc they understand the idea of EXPANDING ROSTERS!!!!! do you think willie even knows humber is up?

kendychavez September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

yes but he’s not one of his guys

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

This team is flailing like a chicken with it’s head cut off. Willie should be that chicken head.

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

i think conine may have already retired

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Did they really just PH COnine for Endy? I assume they then put Gomez in for D? Many, this is really starting to smell like a panic. Shades of the PHillies in 1964!

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Gomez

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 9:35 pm

I can’t even think straight, why of why IS CONINE IN THERE?

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Try asking a member of the ‘69 Cubs.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:36 pm

bring in the righty so we can bring in anderson to hit

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:37 pm

wow….a pretty decent move by willie there

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:39 pm

so willie brought in castro to force manny acta to make a pitching change? … so willie can put in marlon anderson. Is that what’s happening? Does this mean that Castro cant be used for the rest of this game?

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:38 pm

gotay is still there i really hope he faces the righty

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 9:37 pm

I’d give anything for a 3-run bomb here.

miker94 September 18, 2007 at 9:38 pm

scary thing is here, if castro walks or just gets a single without scoring a run, we’re done for this inning, since reyes would be up next and god knows, he can’t hit the broad side of a barn.

Darryl Strawberry September 18, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Now we all get to listen to the Yankee fans at work tomorrow.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:41 pm

marlon looks anxious

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

I work near Philadelphia.

Thankfully, with the Eagles 0-2, Philly fans are every bit as depressed as we are. Phillies are a warm-up act.

jasony816 September 18, 2007 at 9:39 pm

let me tell you i am so angry right now and i feel like i want to freaking kill someone because this is exactly wat happen yesterday. i dont believe this is happening again and again with the mets, they fail to put the hammer down against the phillies when they had the lead n blow the lead and now they do the same freaking thing with Nationals, for god sakes its the Nationals, how do you let that team come back after 4-0 2days in a row to take the lead. i guess the silver lining to this is that they didnt make any errors…

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:40 pm

EASY! Don’t let this pathetic display get the best of you.

I’m willing to bet Marlon gives up his appeal after this game. . . .

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:41 pm

ouch

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

I take that back. I’m already numb.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:41 pm

wow

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

dumbfounded

KeithsChili September 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

I just got an email saying my postseason tickets are arriving tomorrow via DHL. how ironic

upstatemet September 18, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Yanks up 10 zip…………What else is new

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

The top of the order next inning. If somethings going to happen, it’s gotta happen then.

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Something will happen, I can feel it in my bones. Reyes pops up the first pitch, an act I’ve come to call “pulling a Jose,” Castillo grounds out to the 2nd basemen, and Wright flies out.

Bank on it.

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

hello GTA may i take out my anger with ur game?

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

I am not a big proponent of flipping buffet tables because they usually have good food but this is buffet table flipping worthy

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

no one gives a crap about the yankees..we are suffering enough here as met fans…leave them off of this site unless you are bashing them

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

No, I live by Philly. I get to hear it from Philly fans.

I think I will just work from home tomorrow.

I can’t recall ever seeing a team self destruct this quickly and completely.

Is there any particular reason they should win again? It will obviously take a SP stepping up and throwing a solid 8 innings or so. Maybe Glavine? Pedro?

Pray the Pelfrey has his coming out tomorrow. They are going to need it.

Can’t wait to see who comes in for the 7th to pitch:

jasony816 September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

i think it was over once they took alou out of the game because that really killed their morale i think cause they must be thinking wat else could be going wrong… i thinmk willie shouldn’t of taken alou out mid inning n take him out after the inning was over n let the team know when he is on the bench that he is out just to rest him, but when u take him out mid inning no matter wat the team will think he is hurt u know.

Mister Koo September 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm

No, I think Belliard’s 3-run bomb was the back breaker. It totally deflated them. Blame John Maine for this one.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Is it fair to say that Manny Acta has outmanaged Willie in this series?

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm

maybe we should have kept manny and got rid of willie

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:47 pm

At least we should have just kept manny. I heard he was a great influence on the players.

Wyoming Met September 18, 2007 at 9:47 pm

A retarded monkey can outmanage the Mets right now.

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:45 pm

This is like groundhog day. I really didn’t think I was going to see the same exact game two nights in a row. Willie looks like he just lost a close relative. He’s making decisions that make absolutely zero sense. He’s managing like he’s in a coma.

ibleedblueandorange September 18, 2007 at 9:56 pm

All I’m saying is that a lot of managers have gotten fired for far less than their team pulling a 5 game slide with the end of the season in sight.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:45 pm

this loss wont be nearly as bad if the phils dont gain a game on us

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm

if we’re still 2.5 games up tomorrow i will get down on my knees and thank god bc we dont deserve it

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:52 pm

It would almost be inappropriate to lower the magic number if the Phils lose.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Thank god I didn’t go to DC for this series. My dad wanted to go, since he is a diehard Nats fan, but I couldn’t get off work. Saved the $ and aggrevation.

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm

PEDRO!!! GET UP AND SAY SOMETHING!!!

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm

Time to whip out your wiffle ball bat and beat something

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Hit The Weights Zeile September 18, 2007 at 9:47 pm

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Did anyone hear Michael Kay today calling the Mets fans infants? How dare we blame Willie for the Mets troubles.

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Why was that blow hard Kay talking about Met fans?

Navy_Mets September 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Heilman has two jobs, don’t let anyone on before Belliard and stick one in his ribs

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Michael Kay should continue to talk about Nazi’s and all that other crap that he did last year. Guy is such a moron

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:50 pm

I would love to see Belliar dget plunked here by Heilman.

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm

How about that 1-2-3 I sense momentum building…that the game is 3 outs closer to being over

Raisin316 September 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Michael Kay only has a job because he went down on Stick Michael too just like Susan Walman. Those two are Yankee lovers. That guy should not have a mic to talk on ESPN.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm

we need that mentality back when we faced trevor hoffman in that series at home when we came back 2 nights in a row. they played like nothing else matters but getting hits

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

We don’t even need that much energy. This team is flatlining. I’ll take a base runner right now.

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:51 pm

you know, given the choice between a 1-2-3 inning and drilling belliard in the ribs, I would have gone for the drilling. What a let down.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

except that once someone gets on base with 2 outs we cant get out of that inning with out giving up atleast one run

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Can’t wait to read tomorrow morning’s Metsblog spin.

ghobot September 18, 2007 at 9:57 pm

do you know what and who metsblog is? i mean why would you use the word SPIN when the mets organization has nothing to do with this site?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 10:16 pm

So, only the organization itself can put a positive “spin” on things??

Do you know what spin is????

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Here comes the pop-up

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Wow, a quick clean inning by a reliever. I had forgotten what that was like. He better have another one in him just like it.

Now, time for the O to step up and put them ahead in the 8th. Reyes and Castillo get on, then DW and Beltran do the damage. Capped off by a LM triple up the gap.

Or maybe a quick 1-2-3 with 2 pop ups, a DW double, and a K.

One or the other. I can’t decide.

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Oh well

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Reyes another o’fer the night. He has done nothing for this team in 3 weeks.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Who else wants Willie Randolph fired if this team collaspes into oblivion and misses the playoffs???

longtimesufferingmetsfan September 18, 2007 at 9:58 pm

yes and omar

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:59 pm

There is no doubt. The Wilpon’s are media savvy and paranoid. Somebody will have to be blamed, and you can be sure it won’t be them.

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:56 pm

You know, technically, we’re only two down. With Wright at bat, the tying is at the plate…

longtimesufferingmetsfan September 18, 2007 at 9:56 pm

i still love reyes, but at this point i’m ready to trade him straight up for an ace in the off season. he’s really regressed.

icedrake523 September 18, 2007 at 9:59 pm

The only guy I would trade him for is Johan Santana. To be honest, I would consider it if they were willing to give up a catching prospect and an above average reliever.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

You have no idea how quick the Twins would accept that trade if we proposed it to them.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Don’t count on it. You can’t buy ace pitchers.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Oh, OK — now we feel better.

NY Cuban September 18, 2007 at 9:56 pm

This team is awful. Matt is gonna have to turn off the comments tonight. If he thought last night was bad, wait until tonite.

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Anyone else watching the Nats broadcast (out of necessity)? This is by far the worst play-by-play I have ever heard. The bias is stunning.

washtiger September 18, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Just keep the sound down. They’re terrible!

washtiger September 18, 2007 at 9:57 pm

How is it Fick can bunt for a hit, but Reyes can’t? I’m speechless. This is becoming bizarro world…

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

Alban September 18, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Goodnight guys. It’s all over.

metsforever September 18, 2007 at 9:58 pm

If it is any consolation, and it’s not, everybody’s pen sucks, (except against the Mets). The Red Sox spent 3 guys on Eric Gagne and he just blew another game for them. 3 walks and a single after 2 outs.

Double Play. Any surprise?

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Turn off the TV and throw the remote in the garbage disposal.

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 10:02 pm

im afraid that wont serve the purpose lol

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

how could you possibly be angry? this is a great thing!

Willie will be gone, all the old bums will be gone.
We get a new regut in the winter.

If the Mets faired well this season….we wouldn’t see that.

This choke is a blessing in disguise. You’ll be glad next April.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 10:04 pm

And I would seriously bet anybody $50 right now that willie will be back next season. If you think losing the divison lead this year will get him fired you are so nieve (sp?)

stickguy September 18, 2007 at 9:59 pm

that was the cahnce. Get the big fork out, and stick it on in.

Pray the Cards hold on, or it is all over but the crying.

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

I look at tonite’s game this way – our pitching really stunk but that has kind of been the case off and on all season – especially the pen – but at least the offense and defense have cleaned up their act from the last few games. I have less of a problem losing to good pitching than handing the game over on errors.

Say hows that for positive spin :)

toomanyuniforms September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Pathetic

Alban September 18, 2007 at 10:01 pm

we scored 7 runs. how is that losing to good pitching?

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Yeah, spin master I am not…I tried. Not sure what I can say to make this mess look better.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Does anybody else find the “Your Postseason Has Come” commercilas a bit ridiculous at this point???

Mets losing 9-7 and Wright hits into a inning ending DP, first commercial out of the shoot…”Your Postseason Has Come”

How stupid is this entire organization???

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Thats not all that bad.

I think its even more embaressing that they play Sweet Caroline at Shea.

I’m sure it has already been said somewhere in the other 500 comments but please take the Magic Number thing down. It is a little pathetic at this point.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 10:04 pm

It has, I agree. Put up the Philly Magic Number

letsgomets September 18, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Don’t worry Met fans, we are still in first place. My gut feeling tells me that my guys will come through eventually.

just wondering what the post game comments will sound like

metschamps September 18, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Probably alot of the same as what was already posted here – only worse :>)

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Willie, is that you??

washtiger September 18, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Red Sox lost. Oh my — look who’s gaining quickly on their heels…

I think what frustrates me most as a die-hard Mets fan (since I was 8 years old in 1969 — now I’m 45) is constantly playing second fiddle to the Yankees. The Yankees are on the verge of making the playoffs for the 13th straight year. Yes — I know we as Mets fans shouldn’t be concerned with what the Yankees are doing… but c’mon! It’s getting to be a tired act. If A-Rod opts out, think Omar should go for him, no matter what the cost?

DjDeF September 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Why is Ruben Gotay smiling on the goddamn bench?

WrightMVP September 18, 2007 at 10:07 pm

maybe Ramon Castro farted.

Darth Hernandez September 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

If its true that Lo duca didn’t call Maine’s game then Willie made another major mistake. One that is unforgivable.

Slimting September 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I don’t think they filled the managerial postion down in Houston. Willie better start making some calls, because he won’t have a job in NY next season. My local Home Depot is hiring, I should send him an application.

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Guys….gotta tip your cap to the Nats. We’ll just turn the page on this one.

They are a fiesty team…..played us tough.
It’s a long season….my guys will be fine.

No need to say anything….just gotta get in a nice lil groove.

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 10:11 pm

longtimesufferingmetsfan September 18, 2007 at 10:12 pm

i’m starting to think Maine was a fluke, or nothing more than a very average pitcher. tonight’s performance was pathetic. he didn’t need to superman..just serviceable. it should tell you something when the orioles give up on a pitcher

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 10:12 pm

At least we still have Fernando Martinez instead of this guy, who seems to be able to get hitters out. Another solid move by the Coupons and the Mets front office.

No. To be fair, Maine stunk today. The Mets scored 8 runs.

beltransmole September 18, 2007 at 10:28 pm

The entire staff sucks. It’s about as bad as you can get when you have absolutely no one you can count on to get you out of an inning. I don’t feel comfortable with Willie going to anyone in that pen for any reason. They all suck.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 10:26 pm

YES, please take the Magic Number down. Totally ridiculous.

mistermet September 18, 2007 at 10:26 pm

“Gotta tip your cap!”

“No big deal, Get ‘em tomorrow!”

“I’m not worried, I trust my guys (Schoeneweis, Mota, etc.)

Why not use Humber or Joe Smith? You might as well send them home to watch TV or something because they are doing no good here. Why are on the team? Randolph won’t use them cause they are too young. He’d rather send out Schoen and Mota and Sele three days in a row a piece.

As I said last night:

I PRAY that this team loses EVERY SINGLE GAME the rest of the year in order to 95% assure that Randolph is gone. Yeah we’d be giving up the year but it would benefit all Mets fans in the long run.

You cannot win a championship with this buffoon as your manager.

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 10:27 pm

jose--jose-jose-jose September 18, 2007 at 10:29 pm

willie did absolutely nothing wrong tonight. Please tell me, when did he screw up during this game?

MetsMachine September 18, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Keith Hernandez just said the team played a good game tonight.

How is allowing 9 runs to the Nationals a good game?

How low have we sunk?

Alban September 18, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Maine allowed 8 runs. The bullpen allowed 1 run over 4 and 2/3 innings.

Perspective.

longtimesufferingmetsfan September 18, 2007 at 10:27 pm

yes but it is pointless and looks absurd. just take it down.

gomets122 September 18, 2007 at 10:27 pm

I think the fact that a mets-nats game accumulated 600+ comments says it all

mistermet September 18, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Boy Manny Acta that ahole managed that game like it was Game 7 of the World Series. That should have fired them up and made them want to win more. But the manager doesn’t really care, so why should they? He’s got his contract, why bother making the playoffs and working extra hours? He’s getting paid regardless.

Fire him and bring in Ray Knight.

scutter September 18, 2007 at 10:30 pm

How does the manager not care mean anything??? He didn’t give up 9 runs.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I will place remaining tickets from my plan on Stubhub.

I want a refund of my NLDS tickets now!

See you guys again in 2008, it’s been great.

Alban September 18, 2007 at 10:34 pm

if the mets happen to make the playoffs, can I buy your nlds tickets? just curious.

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Willie has got to go. Hell, bring back Manny Acta, he out managed Willie in these games.

longtimesufferingmetsfan September 18, 2007 at 10:32 pm

it’s pretty pathetic that Maz is trying to find something positive in this. so desperate

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:35 pm

this team has been totally mismanaged psychologically, strategically and skill wise

Alban September 18, 2007 at 10:37 pm

psychologically, I agree. Strategically, I’m inclined to agree. I dont know what it means to manage “skill wise.”

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:36 pm

these Mañana Mets should have been playing like there was no tomorrow since mid-august

confidence only goes so far

you got to change the things that aren’t working

floridianmetsfanatic September 18, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Looks like the only way we’re going to get that magic number down is to rely on 11 straight losses from Philadelphia because the Mets are just looking for a way to lose each and every game. Yeah, they scored eight runs, but it’s a tag-team effort. One night the pitching staff blows it, the other night we get baffled by the Nats and Phillies #4 starters like they’re throwing some kind of Wakefield knuckleball, and then of course who can forget the ten errors in two games. Maybe the fantasy football thing IS really affecting these guys. (Is that just a rumor floating around? Or is it actually true? Cause it’s really starting to eat at me if it’s true!) Way to go Willie looks like you really put the fear of God in these guys! Great laid back leadership! Pushover!

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:39 pm

i mean everyone and their grandmother knows the mets sit on fastballs

well someone had to impress upon them that there approach to hitting had to change

someone had to throw bp with some breaking pitches

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:40 pm

look how different green has been lately

but he should have made that change a month ago

and the coaching staff should have made sure it happened

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:44 pm

but i think willie is a big part of the problem

the strategic mistakes he makes aside

this whole the season is long things will even out

well what scares me is the mets were playing almost .700 against sub .500 teams

if all things even out we are dead

Krusty The Klown September 18, 2007 at 10:45 pm

HEY IF THE PHILLIES LOSE THE MAGIC NUMBER IS DOWN TO 10!

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:48 pm

this team has needed the hammer for sometime now

and willie just can’t deliver it

and i am not talking about overt emotional outbreaks thought that might not be all that bad

i am talking about sitting your fanny on the bench if you don’t make the changes that you need to make to get this team to win

reyes has become a freaking head case and should have been reeled in by now

zeekster September 18, 2007 at 10:49 pm

i would love to see how joe girardi or lou piniella would react to this performance

InsaneMetsFan September 18, 2007 at 11:07 pm
